MLB- Roberts agrees to $4.2 million, 1-year deal with Orioles
February 1, 2007
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Second baseman Brian Roberts avoided arbitration with the Baltimore Orioles, agreeing Thursday to a $4.2 million, one-year contract.
Roberts made $3.1 million last season, when he rebounded from a serious elbow injury to hit .286 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs as Baltimore's leadoff hitter. He scored 85 runs and had 36 steals in 138 games.
Roberts had asked for $4.6 million, and the Orioles had offered $3.8 million.
His new contract includes incentives for making the All-Star team, earning a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger Award, and being named MVP for the season or in the playoffs.
The 29-year-old Roberts has a career batting average of .280. He set career highs in 2005 with a .314 batting average, 18 homers and 73 RBIs, a season that was cut short by an elbow injury that required offseason surgery.
Baltimore has two players remaining in arbitration: center fielder Corey Patterson and pitcher Erik Bedard. Patterson is seeking $4.6 million, while the Orioles are offering $4 million. Baltimore offered Bedard $2.7 million, but the left-hander filed for $4 million.
MLB- Kearns, Nationals agree to $17.5 million, 3-year deal

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It all was a tad overwhelming for Austin Kearns when he was dealt to the Washington Nationals by the Cincinnati Reds last season.
He'd never been traded. He went from a team near his Kentucky hometown to one on the East Coast. He went from a club contending for a playoff berth to one heading for a third consecutive last-place finish.
Now he's ready to make his home in the nation's capital. Kearns agreed Thursday to a three-year contract that guarantees the outfielder $17.5 million and adds a long-term piece to Washington's rebuilding effort.
"I don't think there's going to be a better place to be very soon," Kearns said. "I feel comfortable here, and I feel good about where it's going."
Kearns will get $3.5 million this year, $5 million in 2008 and $8 million in 2009, and the Nationals hold a $10 million club option for 2010, with a $1 million buyout. The contract does not include bonus clauses, but Kearns would receive a one-time payment of $100,000 if traded.
"Certainly we think Austin's going to be a cornerstone of this franchise," said general manager Jim Bowden, who drafted Kearns as the Reds' GM in 1998. "His best years are ahead of him. His prime just starts now."
Kearns had filed for arbitration, asking for $4.25 million in 2007, while the Nationals offered $3.65 million. He made $1.85 million last season, when he hit .264 with 24 homers, 33 doubles and 86 RBIs in 150 games for the Nationals and Reds.
Washington acquired Kearns, infielder Felipe Lopez and reliever Ryan Wagner in July in an eight-player trade with Cincinnati.
Kearns acknowledged then -- and again Thursday -- that he was thrown for a loop by the move. He began his Nationals tenure in a 3-for-19 rut, and went two weeks before recording a multi-hit game. Eventually, he settled in and settled down, contributing a series of go-ahead RBIs for the Nationals.
"It all happened kind of fast. The first time a player gets traded, you're probably in a little bit of shock," Kearns said. "But I adjusted here pretty quick."
In five major league seasons, the 26-year-old Kearns has batted .265 with 79 homers, 104 doubles and 299 RBIs. He had some injury problems at the start of his career, and 2006 was the first year he played in more than 112 games.
But Bowden and Kearns both said they consider 2006 proof that the outfielder is capable of playing a full season. As for what sort of stats Kearns might turn in if he's able to do that consistently, he would only say: "I think I can get better."
Washington's first-year manager, Manny Acta, was more concrete.
"At least 25 home runs, 100 RBIs. He's capable of doing that and more," Acta said by telephone from Florida. "I admired him and feared him when I was on the other side. So it's nice to be on his side. He's not only a good guy who can produce at the plate, but he's also a good defensive player who changes the running game of the other team."
Kearns is expected to be a middle-of-the-lineup fixture for Washington, which is revamping its player development system.
Kearns joins third baseman Ryan Zimmerman (runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year in 2006), first baseman Nick Johnson and catcher Brian Schneider as the team's building blocks. Johnson and Schneider both signed deals through 2009 last offseason.
"We have a good core group," Kearns said. "I don't think people actually realize the talent that already is here and how close this thing can get to where we want it."
Notes
Kearns is switching his uniform number, from 28 to 25. "Kind of a new start," he said. ... Two Nationals still could go to arbitration: RHP John Patterson and closer Chad Cordero. ... Bowden and Acta said it's unclear when 1B Nick Johnson will be able to play; Johnson broke his leg in a collision with Kearns during a game in September. "We all know that we're going to miss Nick for at least the beginning of the season," Acta said. Travis Lee and Larry Broadway will compete for the starting 1B job until Johnson returns.

MLB- Myers and Phillies agree to $25.75 million, 3-year deal
By ROB MAADDI, AP Sports Writer
February 1, 2007
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Right-hander Brett Myers agreed to a $25.75 million, three-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, avoiding arbitration.
A former first-round pick, Myers has won at least 11 games each of the past four seasons. The deal is contingent upon Myers passing a physical.
Myers, who made $3.3 million last season, will earn $5 million this year, $8.5 million in 2008 and $12 million in 2009. He gets a signing bonus of $250,000.
"We're very pleased to have gotten this deal done with Brett, who is arguably one of the premier pitchers in the National League," assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He's a proven top-of-the-rotation starter and he will certainly play an even bigger role for us going forward."
The 26-year-old Myers went 12-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 31 starts last season. He led the Phillies in wins, ERA, starts, innings (198), strikeouts (189), winning percentage (.632) and opponents' batting average (.257).
Myers won 14 games in his first full season in 2003, and has started at least 31 games every season since. He is part of a deep rotation that includes newcomers Freddy Garcia and Adam Eaton, promising left-hander Cole Hamels and veteran Jamie Moyer. The Phillies also have Jon Lieber, who could be on the trading block.
Myers missed time last season after taking a leave from the team following his arrest for abuse against his wife in Boston in late June. The charge against Myers was dismissed in October when his wife said she did not want her husband prosecuted for hitting her in the face during an argument near Fenway Park.
"I've grown up in this organization and this is where I want to stay," Myers said. "I love pitching in Philadelphia. I love the ballpark. I love the fans and having Charlie (Manuel) as the manager and guys like Chase Utley around for the next few years was a big part of my decision.
"I've played with these guys -- Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Pat Burrell -- for the last few years and I couldn't imagine myself playing for another organization or with another group of guys. It would probably be a culture shock."
The Phillies gave Utley, an All-Star second baseman, an $85 million, seven-year deal last month. Reliever Geoff Geary is the only remaining player eligible for arbitration.
Selected with the 12th overall pick in the 1999 amateur draft, Myers is 54-40 with a 4.34 ERA in 140 starts and one relief appearance.

MLB- Cubs, Prior reach $3,575,000, 1-year agreement
January 31, 2007
CHICAGO (AP) -- Right-hander Mark Prior and the Chicago Cubs agreed on a one-year deal Wednesday and avoided salary arbitration.
Prior will get $3,575,000 and would earn an additional $150,000 each for making 27 and 30 starts.
Once considered a Cubs' ace of the future, Prior has won just 18 games the past three seasons while battling injuries.
The 26-year-old Prior made $3.65 million last season, when he was bothered by an ailing shoulder and went 1-6 with a 7.21 ERA in nine starts. He asked for $3,875,000 in arbitration and the Cubs countered with $3.4 million.
"It's been a rough couple of years, but you know I'm looking forward to this year and try not to think about what's happened," Prior said during the Cubs' winter convention this month.
"I can't change it, I can't change the reality of what it's been the last three years. I've had some unfortunate things, but I'm not making excuses. It hasn't been good."
Prior was 18-6 in 2003, and was on the mound when the Cubs came within five outs of reaching the World Series.
Besides bolstering their batting order by signing Alfonso Soriano, the Cubs have added starting pitchers Jason Marquis and Ted Lilly during a busy offseason.
Prior is 42-29 with a 3.51 ERA in 106 starts since making his major league debut in 2002. He has struck out 757 in 657 innings -- a rate of 10.37 per nine innings.
NBA- Boozer likely out for several weeks with fracture
January 31, 2007
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer has a hairline fracture in his left leg, and is expected to be sidelined a few weeks.
The injury was initially suspected to be a bruised knee, but an MRI and X-rays confirmed the fracture in the top of the fibula. It typically takes four to five weeks to fully heal, the team said Wednesday.
Boozer was injured in a collision Saturday with New Orleans' Tyson Chandler. He missed a game Monday against the New Jersey Nets.
Boozer, averaging 22.1 points and 11.8 rebounds before the injury, missed long stretches of two previous seasons because of injuries.
