Breakwater Initiates Temporary Cessation of Production at Langlois and Myra Falls

TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 10/28/08 -- Breakwater Resources Ltd. (TSX: BWR) ("Breakwater") has determined that it will temporarily suspend operations at both the Langlois mine in Quebec, Canada and the Myra Falls mine in British Columbia, Canada.

This decision is precipitated by the decline in commodity prices and the general deterioration of the short-term economic outlook globally, which have mitigated the overall operational improvements in production and costs at both mines. This action enables the Company to retain valuable zinc assets that we will mine in the future when the zinc market returns to levels that more accurately reflect underlying supply and demand fundamentals.

Temporary layoffs and the reduction in workforces at both operations will proceed over the next days and weeks with certain mining and milling activities continuing in the interim.

The Company will continue to closely monitor economic and market conditions and will take appropriate actions in the best interest of the Company, its employees and its shareholders.

Breakwater is a mining, exploration and development company which produces and sells zinc, copper, lead and gold concentrates to customers around the world. Once production at Langlois and Myra Falls temporarily ceases, the Company's concentrate production will be derived from two mines in Chile and in Honduras.

Thanks for your reply....! Alumina also at 10 yr highs...need to think how I work that...as China apparently is limiting exports as well as tariffing imports (or vice versa)......to curb their demand as well as develop alternatives. It utilizes a lot of electricity to produce....

Doing real well with BLVKF...Blackstone Ventures...they have Nickel investments in Finland and Canada and have had some good announcements recently. That coupled with rising metals prices they have done well. I would appreciate your view. They are more than offseting the temporary softness of your Zinc play...;) Next year Seton Hall will be in the big dance...

zinc hit .64 today. Highest since I've been tracking it. Another 105million pounds X .01 or $1million extra gross revs/qtr if it lasts all qtr. Every little bit helps and I guess Myra Falls needs all the help it can get. Bobwins

Posted .01eps for 2004, big improvement from 2003 but also means they lost money in q4. YTD 9/04, they had 9 million in net and eps of .02. So they lost 7 million and .01 for q4. Can't directly compare financials yet. Need full financials. Will report once I see the actual P&L. Bobwins

China's zinc appetite fuels bull market

TORONTO--(Mineweb.com) Teck Cominco Market Research Manager Andy Roebuck suggested Sunday that significant "hidden stocks" of zinc may have disappeared--when combined with other factors--have created a bull market in zinc that will "most likely continue for a couple of years."
In a presentation to the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada Convention, Roebuck said only seven weeks of zinc stocks remain as of last month. Meanwhile, zinc prices have been on the rise since 2003. Zinc concentrate markets are tight, and zinc mine supply isn't keeping up with demand, he added.

Roebuck predicted that zinc stocks "should be below normal until the end of this year." Since 262,925 tonnes of so-called "hidden stock" of zinc appeared on the market last year, and no significant deliveries of zinc have occured since last September, he suggested, major hidden zinc stocks no longer exists.

As is the situation with other metals, "China is having a very positive effect on the marketplace," Roebuck declared. He suggested that 2004 "was a major turnaround for Chinese export of refined zinc" as the nation's refined zinc consumption "is growing at double-digit rates." Roebuck added that "this low level of exports is expected to continue,"

Western world zinc concentrate balances are expected to decrease this year due to cuts in mined production of the metal and lower output from refineries, according to Roebuck. "The market is in significant deficit now," he declared, adding no new major increases in zinc mine production will occur until 2007 or 2008.

The q3 report stated that they didn't sell a lot of their output from Myra Falls. That's why inventory was up. No other explanation. I sent an email to company but never got a response. Don't know if that affected q3 financials or not. Bobwins
