Alicia Figueroa was ready Monday to tuck her green card into her purse and be deported with her four youngest children, who do not have legal documents to remain in the United States.
Instead, the 57-year-old legal resident was relieved to learn that her children, ages 16 through 22, were given a temporary reprieve by Immigration and Customs Enforcement until mid-January, at the request of U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette.
"This family has been in a saga for years trying to keep their family together," DeGette said Monday. "I think it's un-American to split up a family."
DeGette got involved last week after hearing that the family faced separation.
The parents became legal residents in 2003 after being sponsored in 1998 by an older daughter who is a U.S. citizen. The siblings, then minors, could not be included in the petition. As soon as their mother received her green card, she filed visa applications for her children, which were approved but not issued.
Because of a backlog, it could take up to six years for the children to get their visas. Under federal regulations, it is illegal to be in the U.S. without documentation.
Two weeks ago, the Figueroa family received notice that Nancy, 22, Blanca, 21, Miguel, 17, and Rosa, 16, were to report to ICE on Monday for deportation. The family's attorney said they were noticed by federal authorities because they were victims of a scam in California when they tried to complete the application process.
"It's been really scary and stressful because there is nothing we can actually do but wait," said Blanca, a sophomore at Community College of Denver.
Blanca was 7 when the family came to live in the U.S. from Michocan, Mexico. Her sister Rosa, a sophomore at South High School with a 4.2 grade-point average, was 3.
"This is where we have grown up, and this is what we know," Blanca Figueroa said. "This is our home."
That's why their mother was willing to go with her young children if they were sent to Mexico. They know no one there and have no idea what it is like to live there, Alicia Figueroa said.
DeGette said she is determined to keep the family together and may consider legislation to make that happen. The bigger problem is a broken immigration system, she said.

Yeah right. I am trading and makey money right now. I may or may not respond to you later... you are making extremist generalizations and have frequently been putting words in people's mouths and name calling.
Not my idea of an mature interaction with you. GLTU
That is nice. I bet you think the government is suddenly going to arrest all these people and deport them. Did you know they first alerted the media so that the whole thing could be covered live? How about the law suit against Swift are you following that?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, that was my point. That article had more to it than "wage slavery" and "picking on the illegals"
So ergo, if I've got it wrong, exactly where do you stand? Oh yes, and I voted for Bush because I though he was a better choice than Kerry and I stand by my decision, although I do not agree with all of his policies and am a little disappointed.
So, I guess you can pat yourself on the back for GUESSING.

I think you haven’t got a clue. I bet you are a Bush supporter.
====================
LOL, liberal total idiots like ergo_dumb are too stupid to understand the the world isn't all black and white.
Ooooh, good one. Well... thanks ergo I will keep that in mind. My confidence is shattered. LOL.
Who I voted for, for President, is irrelevant. ALL of the recent Presidents have had a fine time passing the buck and sweeping this issue under the rug.
I think I've made it clear where I stand on this issue and I know quite a bit about this subject. Have a nice day.
Not at all. That is what you want to believe. People like you are too dumb to understand the world is not all black and white.
LOL, you read the headline and took the bait - the body of the article is the complete opposite of what you believe.
Quit embarrassing yourself.
No you are too stupid to understand that I agree with that article. Why? Because idiots like you just don't understand reality.
Oh, look - Mr. Dumb & Denial. The problem as this other poster pointed out is not the lack of data, it's that you're either too stupid or too dishonest to read what's spoonfed to you.
Oh look. It is Mr No Data. Go bug somebody else. You shouldn't eat raw eggs you know.
What a pathetic response.
I think you haven’t got a clue. I bet you are a Bush supporter.
Anyone have any thoughts on the 2 border patrol agents convicted for shooting a illegal alien drug dealer in the caboose? Now that guy/jerk/criminal/@$^%%^& is filing a civil suit and 2 guys protecting our country are the criminals?
This needs to end.
Get used to that with him.
THanks just a hobby
We have a great group so far....and some great posts so far as well....bed time for me.....see ya
Changing the requirements...
for citizenship to being born in the USA by parents that are legal citizens will keep those families together and solve one loop hole. After all, I'm all for keeping family together!
Interesting mix on the board... good luck on keeping it sane!
Hobby
LOL ergo. Stuck on the headline and miss the point? I didn't think you's agree with that article. LOL
Illegal is illegal. Rules are rules, but employers should be accountable too.
Thanks for posting that oldDrummerman.....I like this part......
"People need to take responsibility for their actions, and that includes illegal immigrants. If they enter the country illegally, and secure employment illegally, they're taking their chances. If, one day, their luck runs out, and their children wind up stranded because mommy or daddy got nabbed in an immigration raid, the blame lies with mommy or daddy."
An article by the son of a friend of mine...

You are correct.......eom
I said in a few years and it is not fantasyland. Uncontrolled it is entirely possibly and I, for one, will do eveything I can to educate people. Ignoring issues untili they are so grand they are uncontrollable will kill our country.
I am sorry you disagree.
La Raza and the reconquesta? This is moving into fantasy land.
"United States of Mexico" is right! Although illegal immigration is not exclusively by Mexicans, it is the volume of our southern neighbors coming that troubles me. (stay with me people before you scream I'm racist... not true)
Underground Mexican groups and very public groups like MECHA preach hate toward all races but their own. They continually pump revisionist history about the Mexican/American war and conveniently leave out things like that land was PURCHASED from Mexico and their own government sold them out. They push their members/recruits to believe the USA stole the land from them and many that reside here would love to "take it back." With a massive increase in numbers, in a few years we could quite possibly be sitting on the edge of a horrific Civil War!!!! I know because my friends and I were approached personally by one of these such groups (I'm in So. CA). This is not a fantasy issue and is very serious.
Do those groups say anything about how the economy would be completely different if Mexico still owned the land? No. Do they truly educate their Mexican members? No. Do they care about the assimilation of ALL immigrants into our country? No.
I would like to see the Border Control issue include helping the Mexican people take back their OWN country from their corrupt government (peacefully, of course!) and those who would like to come under a controlled immigration plan, wonderful!
JMO
Exactly - it's the GOVERNMENT'S job to ID people - not me.
I'm not going to do a backround check on somebody who wants to cut my lawn any more than I'm going to do a backround check on the plumber, the electrician, my mechanic, or my cab driver. Likewise, if my electrician offers to fix my lights for $2.00 and it takes him half an hour.....so be it.
Did you just PINCH ME? LOL........and are you an Illegal? is that why you are so sensitive and Keep defending ILLEGAL immigration? Or are you confusing the Illegal Immigration issue with Racism again...thinking people who support controlling our borders are racists or something???
Are you a Mexican? and why dont you like my signature? if she was WHITE you would probably be saying......."see! He only Like WHITE PEOPLE!!"
TINA...your fun.........but a little misguided on the Illegal Immigration issue IMO.......have fun and make some money today...LEGALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pinche pendejo
Callate por favor
Gracias =)
Eventually you would have to move out of the country if the problem is not addressed.........Like I said earlier..People who do not care about this issue or DEFEND ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.....would probably not have that viewpoint if it affected them or a family member directly....its only a matter of time before it is front and center on your doorstep! and by then it will be too late to do anything about it.......we will be the UNITED STATES OF MEXICO!! start Learning SPANISH.......
I'm more upset cause you have one on your signature! lol
and lawd, I hope you people aren't teaching your children to ask other kids at school for their legal id's
If you don't like it, move. I did.
oh and good morning to you too.
Good morning Tina and everyone................
"illegals can even OWN homes. If the mortgage company doesn't care, why should you?"
If they stole your Identity to purchase that house would you care then? If your employer Fired you and Hired an Illegal would you then care about the Illegals who bought a house in your neighborhood?
If your kid went to a school that was 60 to 80% spanish as a first language for the Kids attending and your English speaking kid was not getting the Education he/she should would you then care?
I agree. That's ridiculous.
Illegals can even OWN homes. If the mortgage company doesn't care, why should you? lol
o dios mio!
Makesmgravy
That 2 cents was worth a MILLION! Great Points....my sentiments Exactly.........See ya tomorrow...ooops I mean today..but later...LOL!
I would like to add my 2 cents here. I have friends who are of a variety of nationalities. So this issue is not about anything more than controlling our borders, controlling our ports and controlling the safety of American citizens.
Not to mention our population and what businesses can support.
It not just these areas that need secured, The Deptartment of Immigraton has allowed almost anyone into our country for years from everywhere in the world then lose track of them.
Our country can hardly support itself let alone illegals. With illegals living here they are also out of the reach of the law. Why is this? its simple they are not registered, no finger prints on file no nothing. No drivers license, no military background etc. If any commit a crime especially a robbery or a violent crime, they can get lost in the mainstream or high tail back across the border.
I think common sense tells us if we can't control our borders we can't control illegal immigration and if we can't do this we cannot control the safety of American citizens. We also can't support illegals with welfare, medical care and homes.
We cannot have open borders nor open ports. Our officials have the resposiblities to make sure we don't now or in the future.
The problem isn't the US. The problem here is the Mexican govt.
Its not just Mexico this should be carved in concrete for all illegals from anywhere. The people here on visa's the DOI needs to keep track of these people and know what they are here for.
GAO Says Electronic Border Control System Is Problem Plagued
A multi-billion dollar system of electronic entry and exit checkpoints at U.S. border crossings is suffering from lax controls and inadequate management oversight, according to a GAO report.

Hey, what do you know?
We both learned something. You learned how ignorant I am and I learned what lowlife you are.
To the circular file with you sir.
We all disagree on what constitutes a respectable wage and what doesn't.
I know, I know....the poor illegals who are being so exploiting that the less-than-minimum wage they earn here is higher than more than 99% of other wages outside of the country and are able to use half the funds to support a family of 7 back in Mexico.
That and the fact that you are obviously grossly uneducated in the area of economics and its impact when you create artificial floors.
Healthy debates are a good thing....and people see it differently...until they are DIRECTLY affected by the PROBLEM..then they change their tune...or opinion if you will..Getting late and I have been up since 2 am.....thanks to everyone for providing some really good information on this board....for those that didnt know...TODAY WAS the very FIRST day for this board...and it looks like we attracted some very educated people on the subject....see you all tomorrow....I will be adding some surveys to the Board tomorrow....take care..
Yes, and documenting people is not enough. We have to have controlled immigration. Handing everyone a free pass at the door after documenting them isn't enough. Documentation doesn't mean we will have the resources for and endless supply of immigrants and the problem will continue to grow.
I guess that would be a start though compared to nothing.
If employment and filling the needs of businesses were the only issue that would be one thing. Sadly, it is not.
The cleaning lady has the key to my front door.
I'm going to try and beat her down for a few bucks a week?
That's just plain stupid. It's stupid on a much grander scale to exploit and abuse tens of millions of illegal and legal resident aliens for the EXACT SAME REASONS
It's not just common decency. It's common sense to pay people a respectable wage and treat them like human beings.
Hi mc6102
Please don't confuse a description of the prevailing politics of immigration with my opinion. To be clear I believe open borders benefit to the wealthy and powerful. That's why any reform will continue to favor their economic intererests. Where our immigrants live those communities are losing out dramatically.
Trillions spent to fight poverty and ignorance pissed down the drain with counterproductive immigration policy.
It will only get worse.
Kudos skono4, Perhaps I am mis-understanding what you were trying to say. While I stand by my response to a previous post, your current posts either have a different message or I just misunderstood you.
We apparently have some of the same concerns. I, too, will never knowingly pay an illegal to do work for me. If I must pay a little more I am happy to do it. A few dollars to support our economy is fine with me. I also support the corner liquor store for small items amd for the kind small business owner who runs it.
Bottom line, the border needs to be controlled, there have to be consequences for actions and right now the illegals have carte blanche. There is an endless list of negatives to counter any positives one could bring up.
Your idiocy is getting boring.
While I agree with some of the questions you posed I find that you have simplified your previous statements by re-phrasing as questions.
Where I disagree with you is in that you claim this is a short term problem and all will be rosy in the long run.
I also disagree with the fact the all inner-city problems are due to middle-class abandonment and "white flight". Inner city people leave for a "better life" regardless of race or color -- as well as businesses. How many times must an honest business owner or manager be robbed before they want to leave??????????? The problem is directly related to uncontrolled borders, gangs, drugs, and a whole new "entitlement" generation who don't have consequences for their actions. Everyone is so worried about being politically correct that they refuse to admit the real problems and find solutions.
If Corporations must outsource to other countries for a buck so be it. I don't want any part of the corruption and sweat-shop mentality that beckons the illegals and gives business owners the green light for ripping off anyone because they have it "better now". The bottom line is it is illegal, and uncontrolled will have devastating consequences.
That goes for my gardener too. If he's illegal I'll hire someone else for what, a few extra dollars a month?
As far as corporate owned media... yes, they influence the voters. They are so obviously biased, but I believe they and many politicians have slanted the news not necessarily for Wall Street(although some), but to keep racism, hate and related "border issues" alive to fill the need for their government funded special interest groups and groups like the ACLU, who are rarely actually "helping" anyone do anything except distance people instead of solving issues.
That is where we disagree.
I live in Southern California and also hire a gardner. He is a legal resident and pays Social Security and state and local income taxes. I pay his BUSINESS with online banking through the Bank of America. He's 100% legit and I would have it no other way. Same deal with the cleaning lady. I know how long they spend doing the work I pay them for and it's easy to do the math to figure a rough hourly profit after their basic expenses. In both cases its closer to 2x the California minimum wage. I really wouldn't want people who are so desperate to work for substandard wages interacting with my family and having accesss to my home. These workers I hire are people with families raising children in MY community.
People like you want our country to become more like the United Arab Emirates you have no idea what this country stands for. It really is a shame you hate this country so.
America does not have a vast labor shortage that requires waves of low-wage immigrants to alleviate; in fact, unemployment among unskilled workers is high—about 30 percent.
http://www.city-journal.org/html/16_3_immigrants_economy.html
It is such an incredibly simple solution - yet people like "ergo dumb" actually believe that a more viable solution to America's problems is having illegals - including drug smugglers, murderers, rapists, and terrorists - should just be able to cross the border.
His stupidity is incredible. I often wonder if he's really joking. Seriously.
