I should know by now how the mind lies to the self and never ever trust what I saw as I think I saw it. I was, as a matter of fact, thinking about the self-portrait of him sitting on an old mattress. It might be time for me to dust off some of my art books for a refresher course. In any event, I 've looked up his paintings on line and I agree with you that none so far have done his craftsmanship justice.
I am not aware of any such self portraits! If you mean that life-size thing he did sitting on an old bed, I was there when he painted that, and he was not shooting anything.
Are you aware of any paintings he did that suggested the use of drugs? I'm not.
Damn, I agree that not many people know about Gregory Gillespie.... Saw one of his shows in D.C. back in 1977. Sort of a cult figure back in my arty days. Disturbing to see self portraits of him shooting up. Crafstman 'non pareil' as the snooty French peoples would say.
Cuz, I respectfully invite you to participate in my new thread. I was getting some great trading ideas from your recent analysis of another guru's picks but you've unfortunately been censored. This is your safe haven:

What a loser. :)
There is not much anywhere to see, actually. He did not like to have his stuff reproduced.
To give you an idea of his ability, take a look at these repros

They are all flat pieces of wood with paint on them. They are flat.
He could paint skin that looked like skin, almost as good as Leonardo DaVinci. He could paint a piece of fruit that looked like a real piece of fruit, from 6" away. Everything he painted looked EXACTLY like the real thing...I mean EXACTLY. He was the most amazing technical master I have ever seen in my life, by far. Nobody else even comes close. I've seen real Dalis, and Dali was a complete rookie by comparison. He was on a level with Rembrandt or Jan Van Eyck.
Unfortunately he was a tortured soul.
Nah, Bob and I are pals. I think it has to do with a glitch of some kind. About half the time when I post a message, I have to click three times to get to the actual message on the site. Other times, it works right. I think it's a programming glitch.
I'll look him up.
I am sorry to tell you this Shorty, but, since the suspension, you are no longer part of Bob's inner cadre. No mailbox fer you!
Interesting! Another post that did not appear in my mailbox.
Gregory Gillespie is not a well-known artist. I met him originally by "accident" when I was hitchhiking one day and the guy that picked me up stopped at Greg's house. He found out I was a painter and we spent some time together since both of us at that point were living just outside of Amherst, Massachusetts.
To appreciate his ability, you would have to see an original work. A high quality photograph loses the definition of his paintings.
I'm not familiar with that name, Shorty.
Actually that was attempted by somebody and he couldn't do it, so I did. I had no idea what the image was until it came up on the site.
I prefer Gregory Gillespie. I visited him at his home on many occasions back in the 70s. I miss him.
Bad reproductions of a friend of mine who is no longer with us, Gregory Gillespie.
The best painter of the 20th century, IMHO.
I am very glad you didn't post this on the LWP, the official Mother Teresa-free zone.
