Yes they don 't say shorts attack then retreat to buy. Well coordinated market manipulation on all dividend paying stocks. Wonder why? Well maybe the were under invested in the market and want dividend paying stocks cheap. Sounds simple to me.
UPDATE: Mortgage REITs Hammered Early but Pare Losses Mid-Day
10:52 AM 5/29/2013 - StreetInsider
(Updated - May 29, 20132:39 PM EDT)
Mortgage REITs were under significant pressure on Wednesday, a moved tied to concerns about a steepening yield curve. This is traced to potential Fed tapering of MBS purchases.
In the view of analyst Michael Widner of KBW, these concerns are overblown, and he doesn't think the Fed will slow MBS purchases in June, as some suspect. With this in mind, he see upside in Mortgage REITs if the Fed isn't done.
Stock cited include American Capital Agency Corp. (Nasdaq: AGNC), American, Capital Mortgage Investment Corp. (Nasdaq: MTGE), and Western Asset Mortgage Capital Corporation (NYSE: WMC). While note mentioned in the report, shares of ARMOUR Residential REIT, Inc. (NYSE: ARR) are caught up in today's rout.
Update: REITs reversed mid-day, a move that is being tied to comments from Boston Federal Reserve Bank President Eric Rosengren. Rosengren said halting purchases of treasuries and mortgage-backed securities would be "premature" at this time.
NLY's simple problem: The Dividend is Plummeting! Has nothing to do with shorters.
Take a look at the ugliness:
http://www.dividendinvestor.com/historical.php?no=3239
How do shorters make mREITs cut their dividends? I only wish I had shorted NLY. It's been a TERRIBLE stock!
got to get over the mess Bennie B. made. Market should deal better next week, all forgotten.
NLY Crexus deal complete should give them a much more balanced portfolio. Up up and away hopefully from here.
yes, I agree with that. They've been sued before. And this new pay people to do it really strikes a nasty cord with me, especially since they, speaking editors here, do their own nasty commentary on any mREIT market current, instead of just using the market current for news.
SA support the shorts with many tickers...
They should be shut down.
Yeah, think I saw a BS Seeking Alpha article earlier this week trying to crash it. $16 might be a stretch.
Shorts having a bad year and haven't learned to stay away from dividend stocks fighting a losing battle. I think we will see 16 by the ex dividend date.
4:20 PM Annaly Capital (NLY) CEO Wellington Denahan exercised on May 9 options to purchase 100K shares of company stock at $13.25 each (today's close $14.73), upping her stake in the company 11% to more than 1M shares
The market looks forward and does not wait for news.
The high rate chasers other than newbies have largely bailed out and moved on to equity plays where the money flow is huge and the momentum has been enormous and continues. It's like 1999 all over again.
I sold all my mReits in October... mid six figures in holdings... and got into other stuff after a great 5 year ride. Since I sold, the S/P's are almost all markedly down and the divvy/distribution rate is very impaired. I owned 11 mReits, in total.
IMO, the glory days for mReits are over. The cache is gone. The bloom is off the rose. The divvy return is not sustainable as the value of the inventory cycles through and new ventures become increasingly less profitable.
Good luck, though.
higher interest rates won't happen for 6-12 months out from here, the spread will increase before the rate moves so there will be plenty of time to get out of this between now and then. It should go back above 16.00 in the next month or 2 because there are plenty of high rate chasers.
For Annaly, a 1/4 point uptick from the Fed represents as much as 20% reduction in spread. God forbid that a tax loophole Grand Bargain takes hold and eliminates huge tax freebies for hedgies and mReits. In the latter case. that would be about a 25% reduction in distribution dimension to investors, leading to a concurrent reduction in S/P.
It's the triple whammy... higher interest... reduced spread... hemorrhaged earnings after interest and taxes.
sounds plausible...
This will close 2013 at below $12 per share. It has been a great run, but the sector is losing favor.
$NLY High-Yield Stock With Low Beta Read here http://ggfinances.com/ggnews/20-High-Yield-Stocks-With-Low-Beta-Ratios/
4:37 PM Annaly Capital (NLY) co-CIO Kris Konrad exercises options to buy 20K shares of stock at $13.25 each, taking his stake in the company higher by about 11% to nearly 200K shares
isn't that how it always works, unless instead it dives after you buy?
This is finally moving upward, but ofcourse i sold my position earlier this week because it was trading sideways for awhile.
yes it does: 1:05 PM The mREITs are back in favor after the Fed's QE8 hit interest margins in Q4. A widening yield curve helps, but managements weren't powerless either. Share buybacks below book and altered business plans - Annaly's purchase of CreXus for one, others upping exposure to non-agency RMBS another - are sitting well with investors. Up 2.1% today, NLY is trading above book for the first time in a long time.
The last 14.90 shares I bought, looking good now.
yes, it's been fairly sluggish compared to a lot of others in that dept, others I've sold some for quicker gains, and drive my investment risk down, but have been unable to do so here.
Still my favorite dividend stock. Been holding 4,000 shares for a long time & the payback is a very welcome part of my portfolio. Although I wouldn't mind seeing the PPS gradually move a bit higher.
4:27 PM Annaly Capital Management, Inc. (NLY) declares $0.45/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 11.54%. For shareholders of record Apr. 01. Payable Apr. 29. Ex-div date Mar. 27.
7:57 AM Annaly Capital (NLY) is asking shareholders to allow management to form a new company with which to run the firm from. Similar to arrangements at competitors like American Capital and Invesco, the move means pay of individual executives would no longer be disclosed. Annaly's CEO made $35M in 2011, chump change for hedge funds, but raising eyebrows for a financial firm post-crisis.
i might have to say goodbye to NLY for now , seems liken were stuck in this zone for now, but i will be back
Buy more, I would.
i guess no 16 by eow, this will probably move were the market moves today
out at 1.17lmao..will try to get back EOW
got calls ITM march 14 @1.13 today, looking to get stock before divi.
7:04 AM CreXus (CXS) shareholders wake up to a nice surprise, with the board accepting a raised buyout offer from Annaly (NLY) - $13/share in cash from $12.50 previously. The company has 45 days to solicit and review offers from other parties, and Annaly will not add to its 12.4% stake in CreXus during this period.
finally doubled my position today..
Yes, I keep forgetting to put in a buy order..
The fund is growing so it will most likely get some more upgrades
Will NLY reach $17-$18 this year???
this looks like a buy, it's been getting a bunch of upgrades as of late.
I think tuesday I will buy some.
THIS COULD BE THE COME UP IN THE WEEKS AHEAD, TURNAROUND TIME!!!!

What is going on this morning with all this volatility? Acting crazy. Can't find any news.
