Alcatel-Lucent is HUGE, their patent inventory is HUGE, there bureaucracy is HUGE, and their expenditure vs revenues are HUGE. That is the problem. ALU is too HUGE for their revenue and my understanding is that labor protections are also HUGE in France making it almost impossible to downsize labor force.
GLTY on your shares. I won't say never but ALU is not for me at this time.
Recent quarter news makes the cube the technology in all these deals, like VoLTE 8/14...
ALU is big, like IBM in the 80's somewhat where there's an ALU office in most big cities. Amarillo, picked up phone book in Spring and ... and then at hotel I was staying at, one with Euro looking truck/van thingy was checking out while I was going in and pointed out amazement of local office and he said yeah lots of people don't realize how big they are.
I learned not to get excited about ALU; still have my Alcatel ball cap though. Remember the cube that was going to revolutionize the communications field and would take ALU to the $20s. It didn't happen. What did happen to the Cube?
CNBC pointed out last week (or the one before) that it was a sustained bull market with a lot of cash sitting out on the side already.
For example, they said Burk. Bill. from Ohmaha had 50 billion in cash (pre BK if he moved recently to BK).
So basically there is plenty of cash to absorb Alibaba and IPO's without selling off anything to fund it (it has to do with so many guessing that a crash was due most likely as CNBC has had some nut on since March talking about major crash... and other radio shows since last year... The basics weren't there to justify every attempt to make the crash happen, that's why it didn't happen.)
Of course China could invade Iraq tomorrow and make everything tank except oil and defense stocks (I guess again... lol)
ALU is so big its hard to absorb costs to show much profit ... one analyst still has a $6 target: http://thestockmarketwatch.com/stock/stock-data.aspx?stock=ALU&a=showEarnings
Hopefully its not a mistake because I am extremely over-weight in Elite !!
So far ELTP only; I sold CACI to buy ELTP and also sold TRPBX to buy ELTP. May turn out to be a huge mistake.
I know not "ALU" but are you long any stock ?
IB_
I hope it does for your sake. I am not buying more of anything for the time being.
"ALU" could easily hit $3.50 by year end, jump in !!!
LoL LoL,
IB_ ;)
I too hope 'ALU' has bottomed, what stocks do you care about?
IB_
Hope so for your sake. I really don't care.
'ALU' has bottomed !!!
Thought's ????
LoL LoL,
IB_ ;)
My "ALU" $0.98 shares are still looking good !!!
IB_
ALU turned out to be a complete disappointment for me too.
I guess I'll continue to hold "ALU" as I did load the boat back when it dropped under a dollar which really lowered my average.
IB_
ALU has been something like ELTP. Lots of promise and no results. Seeking Alpha (scum bag pub) has been hyping ALU for years. It is a hold or sell depending on what you want to do.
Is 'ALU' a Sell or a Hold ???
IB_;)
I am not in ALU now.
Welp, 'ALU' took a small hit today !!!
Thoughts?
IB_
I think 'ALU' will be much higher by Year End !!!
IB_ ;)
'ALU' should break $4.00 per share by year end
Maybe 'ALU' will hit my $5.00 price target within the next few years !!!
LoL LoL
IB_ ;)
ALU monthly, the 20 month through the 50 month. 10 months sideways holding the line perhaps 10 months up if and when it moves up. China allowing more money to leave the country. We will see. Earnings August 8
http://screencast.com/t/yYTfnY8TQO
That's good to know estimate, I assume for US share.
ALU problem has been costs (administrative, recently Alcatel prior to Lucent, and always Bell Labs... same problem with Lucent prior to being saved by Alcatel). But Alcatel floated Lucent, now Lucent has been floating Alcatel... if they can make money together... yeah (maybe these next several months are the turnaround.
I was hoping for more monetization of patents from Bell Labs (lots of innovation but profitability has been lacking). Perhaps they could look into a firm like Spherix to enforce their patents?

That was my thoughts as well. I have seen
quite a few articles and discussion/comments on
SA..http://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ALU
I'm a buyer
Is there another board for ALU? I can't believe that no one is posting.
Thanks
Picked up more $ALU..http://www.alcatel-lucent.com/
This peeved me last week and it still is after dumping it...
The Euro gained on the Dollar (USA) several times and once last at the end of a trading day (Wed. or Thur.) CNBC pointing out the Euro gaining big on the dollar that day so I just expected a currency conversion move up on ALU ADR shares... That day the Euro still gained but ALU and my other Euro dropped, the exact opposite of what should've happened. Just the conversion alone should've made the US shares higher. Very stressful since I got ALU as a network play so ejected and went to a bankrupt Nortel Network related networking patent play to put my hands in all networking not part of Rockstar Consortium (who bought the patents in out bidding Google - so missing out on anyone they made a deal with before 1/1/2014 but the rest have to payup so why not... maybe be back later this year after the conversion rate works itself out but this could only double without butout if lucky but the other could be many multiple gains just suits take time though). Any input on this will be considered if short term reason to stay here. I think it doesn't matter how the news is, they'll manipulate the share price for their investment that they think the can move the market with (like this dollar losing on Euro is bad for dollar but so what most of ALU money comes from other countries and some big deals in Europe recently - heck who knows maybe they invested against Euros like Greenpeace and lost money in options being greedy - happens in oil and gas all the time betting the wrong way against those in power and their position).
Okay... now we know... Gartman on CNBC just said the Euro is in trouble... that explains the drop (I guess)....
Problem with that (Euro trouble again) is that a couple to 3 weeks ago one of their (CNBC) daily groups (had guest(s)) that said Europe is the place to be for the next 2 years... lol
Alcatel Creates Israel Bell Labs Center to Bolster Cloud Effort
By Gwen Ackerman and Marie Mawad - May 20, 2014
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/print/2014-05-20/alcatel-creates-israel-bell-labs-center-to-bolster-cloud-effort.html
Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) plans to open a Bell Labs research center outside Tel Aviv to help the French network-equipment maker advance in cloud technology against competitors including Ericsson AB (ERICB) and Nokia Oyj.
The facility in Israel “will contribute tremendously to Alcatel-Lucent playing a shaping role in the industry,” Chief Executive Officer Michel Combes said in a statement.
Combes, who took over last year, is focusing on innovation to turn around the company after years of losses following the 2006 merger of Alcatel SA and Lucent Technologies Inc. He plans to narrow research to focus on fast-growing technologies, including cloud-based architectures.
“We know that great new discoveries and innovations in ‘cloud networking’ will emerge from our new Tel Aviv office,” Bell Labs President and Alcatel-Lucent Chief Technology Officer Marcus Weldon said in the statement.
Alcatel-Lucent, based in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, is promoting innovation to speed the release of new products. Ericsson, Nokia and Asian vendors such as Huawei Technologies Co. are also emphasizing cutting-edge technology, rather than relying on lower prices to win customers.
The Israeli Bell Labs center will be based in a building in Kfar Saba, outside Tel Aviv, that already houses an Alcatel-Lucent cloud-technology facility. Israel’s commercial hub is the world’s second-best startup area behind Silicon Valley, according San Francisco-based Compass Inc., which collects data on technology companies.
Alcatel-Lucent also runs the Nobel-prize-winning Bell Labs center in Murray Hill, New Jersey, as well as research sites worldwide including facilities in Villarceaux, France; Antwerp, Belgium and Shanghai.

At the least they $$GOOG & $$YHOO should take a 10% stake in $$ALU like Microsoft did with Apple back when Gates saw Jobs as unbeatable.
If I'm Google or Yahoo I'd be buying ALU....
Google buy for Bell Labs... matches the need to control the world (i.e. robots, Boston Dynamics match) and Yahoo's....
Yahoo buy for networking and cloud first-class technology... esp. after today's news of cloud unit in Israel....
I just read recently an article on US companies (I guess, with overload tilt, tilt) where they listed 30 companies in cloud technology... which I clearly saw foreign ALU missing and startup HIVE nowhere.... TILT (they need an advertising campaign take an 80's IBM playcard out and train people to think Alcatel-Lucent).

Yeah. Not hot on this one. Just my opinion. Better places to invest in my opinion. Lol
Wow! Not much has changed from my last time in ALU. Just bought a 4.14 and ALU drops to 3.84. Wonderful; just what I was looking for.
Yes that was it; the cube could be mounted just about everywhere and would serve a given number of users in the area; it was going to replace cell towers so that must be it. I had not followed ALU in recent months and yes it would have been great to have bought at the 52 week loan but I did not. I am hoping that the months and quarters going forward will see a substantial upward trek for ALU.
If that was the black box that was supposed to replace cell towers (to deploy inside buildings, i.e.)... I don't know... but it seems that technology is incorporated in their cloud solution through Nuage.

NUAGE NETWORKS
Nu-âhj: From French, meaning 'cloud'.... this would be the deal that ran up the price to where you purchased... long term could be great but I'm not sure Americans even know what it means (my old boss when I told him Oracle was coming out with O/S (operating system) that we are at a major point in computing on o/s... and I assumed it was a cloud o/s... he was silent... and I was tilting one reading the cloud stuff right now .... so big changes coming because CNBC nerds where blabbing a few weeks ago about PC going away forever... I was like no way...

I have been out of ALU for nearly 2.5 years after a disastrous adventure that cost me a good bit of money. At the time that I sold my shares there had been talk about the cube that was going to revolutionize communications for the better. Whatever happened to that cube if anything?
I bought 10K shares today at 4.14 and it promptly ended the day at 4.06 so hope it will not be more of the same. I bought mostly because of the improving earnings quarter over quarter the past year.
Had 3 chances to sell above $4 last week. Aggravated. Maybe NOK does come after them. GLTA,

Good to hear from you, mpeppy. I hope everything is well with you. I felt sad when I discovered you had not been there for several months and not also a moderator. The place looked so different without you. To me you came across as a good and responsible moderator, doing your best with the timely updates on progress and the specific news and also with the charts. Devoted and respectful you made other posters feel at home. That's why I had a feeling that you would not abandon 'ship'. Best regards.
