NYSE- and TSX-listed gold miner Agnico Eagle has reported record quarterly production, record annual earnings and cash flow and outlined plans to bolster production by 24% from 2020 to 2024.

The Canada-based mining company on Thursday reported record net income of $511.6-million, or $2.12 a share, for 2020, driven by high gold prices. This compares with income of $473.2-million, or $2 a share, in 2019.

Fourth-quarter income was $205.2-million, or $0.85 a share, and adjusted fourth-quarter income was $162.1-million, or $0.67 a share, for the quarter.

"Despite 2020 being very challenging, we ended the year with record quarterly gold production, our largest gold reserve base and our best-ever safety performance as a result of the excellent work of our employees,” said CEO Sean Boyd.

Fourth-quarter production jumped to 501 445 oz, including 15 504 oz of precommercial gold production from the IVR openpit at the Meadowbank Complex and the Tiriganiaq openpit at Meliadine. All-in sustaining costs (AISC) for the quarter were $985/oz.

Payable gold production in the full year 2020 was 1.7-million ounces at an AISC of $1 051/oz. This falls within the group’s guidance of 1.68-million to 1.73-million ounces at an AISC of between $1 025/oz and $1 075/oz.

"With gold production expected to increase by approximately 300 000 oz in 2021, combined with an anticipated decline in total cash costs per ounce of 6%, we expect to continue to generate strong net free cash flow in 2021 while we steadily advance our pipeline of growth projects," said Boyd.

The mid-point of Agnico’s gold production guidance for 2021 and 2022 remains at 2.05-million and 2.1-million ounces, respectively

AEM had a bad year but their 2019 earnings are only about a half of
KL's.

Is KL an undervalued bargain ?

All gold miners have taken a big shareprice drop this week much greater than gold even with fridays drop in the POG back to the US $1520 range.

In trying to make sense of the KL shareprice compared to other gold miners I looked at Barrick and Agnico Eagle.

KL showed consolidated earnings in their Feb 20 report of $2.74/share but Yahoo shows $2.65/share.
I'm not sure why. These Yahoo earnings do not include the additional
earnings that will come in from the Detour mine from 2019 so just very
roughly Detour will have mined close to 600k oz at a profit of about
$300- $400 over their costs of around $1000/oz so there should be an
addition of lets say US $350M divided by the shares now outstanding of
286 million so about $1.22/share to be added to the KL earnings for 2019 (actual shares are less than 286M now due to buybacks).
For purposes below I used the Yahoo $2.65/share plus $1.22 from
Detour to give an estimate of KL's actual earnings for 2019 of
$3.87 to compare with ABX and AEM now that the shares issued
to buy DGC are included in KL's share base.

Any input as to why this KL earnings estimate is wrong would be
appreciated.

Until we have post merger data on KL's earnings and the value put on
Detour assets and its 2019 earnings its hard to compare but using
Yahoo Finance and US dollar values below is a brief comparison:

I know the market is concerned with the life of mine at its rich
Fosterville property but this is getting ridiculous.
KL's earning per year are by far the best of these 3 in fact they are
approaching that of both ABX and AEM combined on a per share basis.
Yet it is valued at less than a quarter that of ABX only ¾ that of AEM .
AEM had a bad year but their 2019 earnings are only about a half of
KL's.

KL mines mostly gold and in safe areas vs ABX which has a lot of copper
and some in not as safe mining regions.
In addition KL has a lot of cash on the balance sheet so that portion
of there assets (over 10% of their market cap) should have held value
in this market decline I think if the gold price rises it should
benefit KL more than ABX because of KL's greater percentage of
gold endowment.
The cash provides ready funds for exploration while others need to
borrow or issue shares to afford to explore.

The only thing that would seem to be holding back KL's share price is
the perception that it has a shorter mine life which
the Detour acquisition addressed somewhat.
Any exploration success this year at either Detour Lake or at
Fosterville will likely make this stock surge ahead meanwhile
Macassa is growing and will soon have more production from
the new shaft even if Fosterville begins to decline.



Bottom line is long term an undervalued KL looks like a
far superior bet than a bloated ABX which mines copper
in dangerous jurisdictions or
AEM which is having mine problems up north.

A Company in Friendly Hands

“I decided to become more active in the company,” Ciavarella said. “I met with one of the large shareholders (now the Chairman) and we both agreed that we wanted all the shareholders to participate in the upside of the business rather than see it go into bankruptcy.”

The pair agreed to implement a significant turnaround strategy. They purchased all the debt from the debtholders, injected fresh capital into the business, and in April 2017, Ciavarella took on the position as CEO.

“This decision gave us a lot of credibility in the market,” he commented. “It was definitely a unique approach and one that was not expected. Purchasing and restructuring all the debt significantly de-risked the company as all of the debt moved into friendly hands with long-term maturities.”

This afforded the company with the necessary financial stability to allow the management team to move the Copperstone mine forward and continue creating shareholder value.

The Copperstone Mine

The Copperstone project is a former producing mine with high-grade gold resources defined. When Kerr acquired the asset—which included a land package that is approximately 3,600 hectares—the company’s geologists believed there would be tremendous exploration potential for adding to the existing resource.

As such, the opportunity to continue creating shareholder value through the implementation of its exploration program became a key strategic focus.

Previous drilling efforts from the publically-traded company that owned the Copperstone Project before Kerr indicated that the Copperstone asset is a high-grade gold project. There is 43-101 compliant historical resource of approximately 300,000 ounces with a grade of approximately 10 grams per ton.

“The aspect that creates our confidence as we move forward is the fact that previous drilling on the project has been successful in identifying additional opportunities that were never pursued due to lack of capital, we are pursuing these and other targets to expand our resources,” said Ciavarella.

In addition to the many highly attractive features of this project, which include prior successful production of over 500,000 ounces of gold from the Copperstone zone, an existing resource, a huge land package with tremendous exploration upside, excellent supportive mining jurisdiction, and all permits in place, is the added benefit that all infrastructure required to operate a mine are in place as well.”

Since the properties are located in Jalisco. A take over target for AEM from what I've heard. The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that shares of Canadian gold miners are on a tear, as investors pile into gold in search of safety. The Post's Christina Pellegrini, writing in Trading Desk, says that on Thursday, the stocks of Barrick, Goldcorp and Agnico Eagle Mines continued their winning ways. Shareholders have catapulted the miners' stock prices sharply higher since the beginning of the new year, with Barrick adding 69 per cent, Goldcorp 33 per cent and Agnico 32 per cent. The price of gold has risen 14.8 per cent in 2016, as concerns over sluggish growth and sputtering equity markets have increased demand. Six of the 10 best performing companies trading on the country's senior stock exchange are in the gold business. Barrick places in the third sport and No. 4 is Kinross. "We are positive on the outlook for gold given the macro-environment back drop," TD Securities analysts wrote Thursday in a research note on Barrick, suggesting that the metal still has room to run, "and believe that exposure to a gold producer with strong leverage to the gold price is appropriate." Barrick has been slashing expenses and reducing its debt load, while its fourth quarter results beat Street expectations.

Raising money for development of mines

"The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition Agnico Eagle Mines has registered to sell as much as $500-million (U.S.) in stocks or bonds as it looks to develop mines in Northern Canada and Mexico. A Bloomberg dispatch to The Globe says the base shelf prospectus is valid for 25 months. "Unless otherwise specified in a prospectus supplement, the net proceeds from the sale of the securities will be used for general corporate purposes, including to fund potential future acquisitions and capital expenditures," the company said in a filing Friday. Agnico Eagle wants to bring in partners and may sell stock to help fund projects as it battles low gold prices, chief financial officer David Smith told Bloomberg. Developing the Amaruq and Meliadine mines in Canada and El Barqueno in Mexico are the top priorities. Agnico Eagle closed Friday at $34.47, down $1.02 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

"TORONTO, April 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ - Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (NYSE:AEM, TSX:AEM) ("Agnico Eagle" or the "Company") today reported quarterly net incomeof $28.7 million, or net income of $0.13 per share for the first quarter of 2015. This result includes a non-cash foreign currency translation loss on deferred tax liabilities of $23.3 million ($0.11 per share), various mark-to-market and other adjustment gains of $22.7 million ($0.11 per share), unrealized losses on financial instruments of $13.6 million ($0.06 per share), non-cash foreign currency translation gains of $11.7 million ($0.05 per share), non-cash stock option expense of $7.8 million ($0.04 per share) and non-recurring gains of $7.6 million($0.03). Excluding these items would result in adjusted net income of $31.4 million ($0.15 per share) for the first quarter of 2015. In the first quarter of 2014, the Company reported net incomeof $97.1 million or net income of $0.56 per share.

First quarter 2015 cash provided by operating activities was $143.5 million ($176.8 million before changes in non-cash components of working capital). This compares to cashprovided by operating activities of $250.4 million in the first quarter of 2014 ($207.2 million before changes in non-cash components of working capital). The decrease in cash provided by operating activities before changes in working capital during the current period was largely due to lower realized gold and silver prices (down 8% and 17% respectively, period over period) and timing of sales which resulted in lower sales volumes relative to the ounces produced during the quarter.

This performance coupled with lower fuel prices and weaker local currencies, has also resulted in better than expected operating costs", said Sean Boyd, Chief Executive Officer. First Quarter 2015 highlights include:

Record quarterly gold production - Payable gold production1 in Q1 2015 was 404,210 ounces of gold at total cash costs2 per ounce on a by-product basis of $588 and all-in sustaining costs3 ("AISC") of $804 per ounce
Record quarterly precious metal production in Mexico - In Q1 2015, payable gold and silver production was 89,077 ounces and 663,000 ounces respectively. Total cash costs per ounce of gold on a by-product basis from our Mexico operations averaged $387
2015 guidance reiterated - Expected production for 2015 is maintained at approximately 1.6 million ounces with total cash costs on a by-product basis of $610 to $630 per ounce and AISC of approximately $880 to $900 per ounce
Infill drilling at Amaruq continues to yield positive results - Drilling resumed in late March, and holes drilled from the ice on Whale Lake have yielded promising results including 14.0 grams per tonne ("g/t") gold over 18.9 meters, in one of four lenses cut by the same drill hole (AMQ15-168), as well as 15.3 g/t gold over 8.9 meters in another hole (AMQ15-172)
Drilling at Kittila yields deepest Suuri Trend intersection to date and indications of a new parallel zone - Drilling of the Suuri Trend below the Roura area has returned 5.3 g/t gold over 10 meters at a vertical depth of approximately 1.6 km (ROD14-004F). Drilling has also shown indications of a new parallel zone 150 meters east of the main zone with intersections including 7.0 g/t gold over 7.0 meters at almost 1.3 km depth (ROD14-005)
Continued focus on a strong balance sheet - In Q1 2015, $100 million was repaid under the Company's credit facility
A quarterly dividend of $0.08 per share declared

Agnico Eagle trades at a discount to its peers despite having the highest quality story in the North American gold sector at present. The company recently filed an updated 43-101 compliant report for Meliadine. The report highlighted a 15% ungeared after tax project IRR at $1,400 gold and 80c CAD
(Canaccord Genuity at 14%) and a 10% IRR at $1,150. While perhaps underwhelming on the surface, Lesiak notes that the report utilized only one-third of the current 10.1moz mineral inventory with a mine life of only 8 years. Assuming the mine life can be extended another five years, the IRR at $1,400 gold would increase to 19% or 14% at $1,200 gold. Agnico Eagle will release its Q1/15 results aftermarket on Thursday, April 30, 2015.
