Many short sell. Earning after market. Think his report is not going to be good
AeroVironment fits the profile of a successful drone company, and could dominate in certain areas in the market in the future. One area that is extremely profitable in the military drone market are target drones, these are either small target drones used for shooting practice or for evaluating radar and anti aircraft defense systems, and most often are used once only! Or in some cases it may involve the conversion of decommissioned manned aircraft, such as old F15 or F16 into remotely controlled drones.
Though AeroVironment is not currently, actively involved in target systems, it certainly has the infrastructure and know-how to do so. Target drones are the lesser known part of the UAS industry, they are usually only used ones, since they are bound to be destroyed by the missile being tested.. or they can be used as decoys to fool enemy anti aircraft defense. But since anti aircraft defense systems are sold globally, and are being evaluated all the time against new threats and vulnerabilities, the one thing that these tests need and consume a lot of, is target drones, which are quite expensive and very profitable to the right manufacturer. To put things in perspective, a single Patriot missile can cost anywhere between $1mil and $6mil, the single target drone to be destroyed in the firing test can cost anywhere from several hundred thousands to almost the cost of a Patriot.
And technology can only be restricted by the imagination of the designers... the slightest extra little feature in the target drone can make it 3 – 4 times more expensive than the competition, and yet it can still win the trust and the contract of the client, remember we are talking about security and testing military defense systems where cost is alwways second to results.
AeroVironment in my opinion, will undoubtedly get involved in this overlooked, but seriously profitable target drone market in the future and may well defeat other rival players. That is something every investor should bear in mind. On the domestic civilian market, it is broadly expected that small newly formed companies such as Drone Aviation will be the dominant players because of their products being fully compliant with FAA regulation, which is the only way they can be sold and legally deployed by clients.
AeroVironment Inc (AVAV) is trading near fundamental support levels!
AeroVironment's stock is trading near levels (just over $30), which are considered to be slightly under what is perceived as fundamental value zone, any subsequent drops from this level should be considered as buying opportunities.
The drone, and micro drone markets are becoming even more interesting and even more significant and positively unpredictable from year to year, with the advent of new applications, or even brand new technologies that allow the use of extremely sophisticated sensors, autopilot systems and pattern recognition software. With key companies such as AeroVironment (AVAV) and even Drone Aviation (DRNE), the name of the game in the drone market is changing rapidly. Just one single advancement in one of these technology fields, can make the end product extremely competitive for 1 to 5 years.
These are just 2 companies whose stocks are expected to rise steadily from each and every correction in the future. The numbers may or may not support the anticipation of strong sales or good profit margins, but the companies themselves are well structured, well managed, and strategically well prepared.

Extremely impressive, state of the art technology at AVAV. Not real impressed with the financials here yet, but ultimately this deal with Lockheed is a big big acknowledgement that AVAV's is the real deal.... cutting edge intellectual property, in a fast growing niche.... Greenlight.

"To me, [AeroVironment (Nasdaq: AVAV)] is first and foremost a defense contractor ... dogfighting giants like Boeing (NYSE: BA), Lockheed (NYSE: LMT), and Northrop (NYSE: NOC) for unmanned-aerial supremacy in the sky. ... As for AV's ... fast-charging rechargeable batteries ... basically, I've written off "PosiCharge" as a technological curiosity, but little more."
How wrong I was. When Motley Fool Rule Breakers recommendation AeroVironment inked a deal to distribute PosiCharge systems at Toyota (NYSE: TM) forklift rental locations across the U.S. last year, I should have seen the writing on the wall. I didn't. Shame on me.
Fool me once, fool me twice...
If I'd had sufficient foresight, perhaps I would have anticipated the news that sent AeroVironment (AV) shares rocketing 18% higher yesterday (with an 8% give-back this morning). In short, the company allied with another Japanese motor icon, Nissan (Nasdaq: NSANY), to electrify the District of Columbia's automobile fleet.
A trickle of details on the deal have emerged: The D.C. city government intends to first purchase "some" PosiCharge systems from AV, and then install them at strategically located recharging stations around the city. This should happen by the spring of 2010. A few months later, D.C. will purchase "about 100" electric cars from Nissan and begin its grand experiment. (And word has it that Nissan's first mass-produced electric cars will indeed be ready for sale in 2010.)
"Some" stations? "About 100" cars?
I know, I know. So far, this doesn't sound like big news. Also, we have no idea what revenues are involved for either AV or Nissan. It hardly seems the stuff of which 20% price jumps are made. Yet similar jumps happen at "story stocks" like AV all the time. Remember the 12% bump First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) got when China unveiled a solar subsidy program almost totally lacking in detail back in March?
Plus, this is only the beginning. According to AP, which reported the story yesterday, D.C. aims to "bring hundreds of electric cars and charging stations to the city" over time. And in the bigger picture, D.C. seems to be laying the groundwork for a program that could be replicated in other cities -- magnifying the scale of [whatever revenues we're talking about] many times.
Foolish takeaway
Nearly 100 years ago, Vladimir Lenin told us that: "Communism is Soviet power plus the electrification of the entire country." AeroVironment shareholders can tell you today: "Electrifying a city works out pretty well for capitalists, too."
3/11/09AeroVironment (Nasdaq: AVAV) disappointed a lot of investors when it reported third-quarter earnings Monday. But it didn't disappoint me.
True, sales grew only 8%, and operating margins came in at a mere 8% -- results far short of the gangbusters growth of yester-quarter. True, too, AeroVironment management pulled back the throttle on guidance, and now projects it will book between $240 million and $250 million in sales this year, reaping at most $35 million thereon.
Funded backlog is up more than 100% over last year despite the recession, a fact which explains the extreme interest in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) we've been seeing from defense industry stalwarts like Boeing (NYSE: BA), Textron (NYSE: TXT), L-3 (NYSE: LLL), and Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC). But no doubt about it, in the here and now, AV has significantly undershot previous guidance of low-20s growth.
Reality bites
So why do I find these numbers less disheartening than the Street? To learn the answer, you must travel back in time three months, and listen to what the company told us in December. I mean really listen -- not just skim the headlines and press the "buy" button when a single quarter glows green.
Listen:
"An increase [in] investments in [various operating costs would] ... bring our ... operating margin in line with our original targets for the year."
"The company closes ... many times ... between Christmas and New Years, reducing production during our third quarter. [As a] result ... our third quarters have been flat or down from our second quarters."
Thus, there was every reason in the world to expect profits to be down in Q3. And there may have been some irrational exuberance in shares rising up to ridiculous pre-earnings heights.
Where to from here?
So here we sit, one "bad" earnings report and 34% worth of lost market cap later, reviewing the carnage. Is it at least safe to buy AeroVironment now?
Maybe. Here's how I come at the problem:
Over the past three quarters, AeroVironment generated $12.1 million in free cash flow. Applied to current revenues, that makes for about a 7% cash profit margin on revenues. So, if AeroVironment is right about its full-year guidance, it should generate a total of about $17.2 million in cash flow this year. Trading at 24 times expected full-year cash flow and a 20% long-term growth rate, the stock looks a little overvalued to me. Personally, I'd prefer a steeper discount before buying more shares -- but we're getting close.

This one could be a Monster in the Making.......
MONROVIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AeroVironment, Inc. (AV) (NASDAQ:AVAV) today announced that Balqon Corporation (OTC:BLQN), a developer of heavy duty electric trucks, tractors and electric drive systems, has purchased a new high voltage version of AV's PosiCharge(TM) fast charge systems as part of a program to replace internal combustion yard tractors with electric propulsion vehicles at the Port of Los Angeles.
Yard tractors, or "hostlers", are used by the Port of L.A. and other ports around the world to move containers from docks to on-site storage yards where the containers await transportation to their ultimate destinations. The high-volume flow of containers through ports often requires that hostlers operate with only limited breaks. PosiCharge(TM) fast charge systems support electric material handling vehicles used in high velocity factories, distribution centers and airports to support mission-critical operations. The PosiCharge(TM) fast charge system developed for heavy-duty electric yard tractors can charge up to four heavy-duty Balqon electric trucks at a time and provide enough energy during short periods of time to enable the productive flow of containers through the port while eliminating emissions.
"Studies show that sea ports are significant contributors of emissions and carbon into the atmosphere," said Mike Bissonette, senior vice president and general manager, AV Efficient Energy Systems. "The Port of L.A. is at the forefront of a movement to reduce these emissions. Our fast charge systems are used around the world and can help ports, like L.A., clean the air and reduce operating costs. It's a winning combination for all."
The fast charge system operating at the Port of L.A. is based on AeroVironment's PosiCharge(TM) industrial fast charge systems, which power thousands of electric material handling vehicles in airports, factories, and distribution centers throughout North America. AV's PosiCharge fast charge systems serve eight of the top automotive manufacturers, seven of food and beverage's largest companies, nine of 10 leading airlines, and 15 of Fortune and Global 500's top 100 companies.
About PosiCharge(TM)
PosiCharge(TM) fast charge systems allow industrial and heavy-duty electric vehicle operators to eliminate battery swapping, thereby recovering run time, enhancing productivity, optimizing assets, and improving worker safety. PosiCharge(TM) systems fast charge battery packs in the vehicle during scheduled breaks, so the battery pack never leaves the vehicle. The result is instant productivity improvement, a cleaner and safer work environment, and a streamlined workflow that no longer stops for battery changing. With proprietary technology that safeguards batteries by customizing each charge, PosiCharge(TM) systems can actually extend a battery's useful life compared to traditional charging solutions, further optimizing operations. PosiCharge(TM) has been supporting high-velocity Fortune and Global 500 facilities for more than six years. For more information about PosiCharge(TM), please visit www.posicharge.com.
