NASCAR changes starting lineup procedure
JUNE 21, 2024 AT 4:21 PM
NASCAR has changed the way the starting lineup will be set, starting this weekend at New Hampshire.
Rather than having the final round speeds determine the first through tenth starting spots, the drivers from Group A during the final round will set the outside rows 2-5 and Group B will set the inside rows 2-5.
The top two fastest speeds still be the pole and outside pole.
This change sets the starting positions for the drivers in the final round in the same way as those that do not make the final round.
The new rule is as follows (new text in red).
Qualifying Format for Oval Track
7.4.
O. If one or both groups are unable to complete the Final Qualifying round due to weather or other adverse circumstances, only speeds posted in the first Qualifying round will be used. The fastest vehicle in Group A and Group B will be assigned starting positions 1st and 2nd in descending order, fastest to slowest. All remaining Group B vehicles will be assigned odd numbered starting positions (3rd , 5th etc.) in descending order. All remaining Group A vehicles will be assigned even numbered starting positions (4th, 6th etc.) in descending order.
7.9.1.3 – ASSIGNMENT OF STARTING GRID POSITIONS 1ST-40TH WITH QUALIFYING GROUPS
A. Starting grid positions 1st-40th will be assigned to eligible Team Owners in the order of final Qualifying results.
B. The fastest single lap speed posted by each eligible vehicle in its assigned group will determine its starting
grid position.
C. All vehicles that advance to the Final round of Qualifying will be assigned starting positions 1st-10th based on their speed posted in the Final round in descending order, fastest to slowest. The fastest vehicle from Group A and Group B will be assigned starting positions 1st and 2nd based on their fastest single lap speed in the Final round in descending order. The 2nd , 3rd,4th and 5th fastest vehicles in the Final round from Group A will be assigned starting positions 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th fastest vehicles in the Final round from Group B will be assigned starting positions 3rd, 5th , 7th, 9th.
D. Vehicles in Group B that do not advance to the final Qualifying round and are eligible for the Event, will be assigned the odd numbered starting positions (11th, 13th, 15th, etc.).
E. Vehicles in Group A that do not advance to the final Qualifying round will be assigned to the even numbered starting positions (12th, 14th, 16th, etc.).
F. When two or more eligible vehicles in the same Group have the same Qualifying speed, the starting grid positions for those vehicles in that Event shall be assigned based on the NASCAR Cup Series Team Owner Points standings in descending order, in accordance with Section 7.1 General Requirements.
G. If the NASCAR Cup Series Team Owner Points standings do not prevail in breaking the tie, then starting grid positions amongst those vehicles will be assigned by the order in which the duplicate speed was posted, with the driver setting the duplicate speed first receiving the higher starting grid position.
H. In the event the even and odd positions become imbalanced, vehicles may be assigned starting positions that are not based on their Group to ensure the odd numbered positions are filled first

According to a report in The Athletic, 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. will retire at the end of the season.
This is also will knock another Silly Season domino over as Chase Briscoe, out of a ride with the closure of Stewart-Haas Racing, is the leading candidate to take over the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 19 Toyota Camry XSE.

Carl Edwards vs Rickey Stenhouse Jr
“I’m a little bit worried about Iowa as we saw with the photos and images from the tire test,”
“They probably had to fix the track but why they didn’t pave the whole track is interesting. So, I’m not sure what kind of race it’ll be — a good one or not when we actually go there for real.”
Issue with Iowa Speedway?
Harvick has an issue with the repave
Ahead of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race
Who in the world decided to repave this racetrack?” Harvick asked. “You had to run one with the old asphalt. They repaved the racetrack from the middle of the racetrack down. If you’re going to repave it, repave the whole corner because now you’ve got half a racetrack
Harvick continued: “I know that IndyCar had been there. But this might be of the biggest F-ups in the whole year. It is one of the biggest mess ups that we could possibly have this year. When I saw the pictures from the tire test of the racetrack being repaved, every driver in that field was looking forward to being able to run anywhere on the racetrack, and now you have half the racetrack..

beautiful track
“We broke a valvespring,” Bell told FOX Sports on Thursday at Sonoma Raceway. “And we have not had valvespring problems for a long period of time. I think it was 2022, that we had a rough go of it with valve springs but we haven’t seen that in a period of time now.
“They think, and I do too, that it was just a random part failure. We’re not expecting anymore.”
Valvesprings are the most stressed part on an engine, receiving loads approaching 150,000 to 190,000 psi every cycle. With NASCAR mandating less horsepower and fewer rpms, valvesprings are less stressed than in recent NASCAR history, thus the conviction that it was just a faulty spring that bit the No. 20 team.

NASCAR and the overall motorsports world are mourning the loss of one of its most accomplished drivers, Parnelli Jones, who passed away on Tuesday at 90. Jones is celebrated for his victory in the 1963 Indianapolis 500 and as an Indy 500-winning team owner. His son, P.J. Jones, confirmed that his father died at Torrance Memorial Medical Center at 5 p.m. Tuesday, surrounded by family. P.J. shared that his father had been battling Parkinson's disease for several years. Though many would remember Parnelli for his iconic Indy 500 and Baja 1000 victories, it was actually stock car racing that set Parnelli Jones on the path to becoming a legend. Not just this, the motorsports legend lived a passionate life as he frequently returned to his stock car racing roots, including NASCAR, even amidst his successful years in open-wheel and off-road racing.

NASCAR Cup cars do not run inner liners in any of their tires.
I cant blame him....Stewert....
Part of NASCAR history goes into the books. Said differently, "this ain't your daddy's NASCAR" !
Stewart-Haas Racing, which has won two Cup titles and captured 69 wins since its formation in 2009, will close after the 2024 season, shuttering a four-car Cup operation.
Co-owners Gene Haas and Tony Stewart have appeared focused on other aspects of their businesses in recent years. Haas has a Formula 1 team that has struggled and the three-time Cup champion Stewart started an NHRA drag-racing team a couple of years ago that his wife drove for last year and Stewart is driving for this year.
SHR has struggled in recent years and its hefty support from Ford is set to end after this season. It also lost two major sponsors in Smithfield and Anheuser-Busch prior to this year, so without that Ford support continuing it would have been difficult to sustain a four-car operation.
"We have made the difficult decision to close Stewart-Haas Racing at the conclusion of the 2024 season," Stewart and Haas said in a joint statement. "It is a decision that did not come easily, nor was it made quickly.
"Racing is a labor-intensive, humbling sport. It requires unwavering commitment and vast resources, with a 365-day mindset to be better than everyone else. It's part of what makes success so rewarding. But the commitment needed to extract maximum performance while providing sustainability is incredibly demanding, and we've reached a point in our respective personal and business lives where it's time to pass the torch."
The organization has four charters that it can sell, and sources indicated at least three of them will go to existing Cup organizations — one to Front Row Motorsports, one to 23XI Racing and one to Trackhouse Racing. All three of those organizations indicated they had no comment on any charter acquisitions today. Where the fourth charter goes is not clear.
Not having SHR on the Cup grid will be eye-opening next season. SHR started with Haas operating Haas CNC Racing in 2002. Haas gave Stewart half the team in 2009 for him to come drive and help operate the organization. They won championships in 2011 with Stewart and 2014 with Kevin Harvick.
The organization has 69 Cup wins with the last coming in 2022 with Harvick, who retired after the 2023 season.
"We're proud of all the wins and championships we've earned since joining together in 2009, but even more special is the culture we built and the friendships we forged as we committed to a common cause —winning races and collecting trophies," Stewart and Haas said in their statement.
"That is the same commitment we made to our personnel, our partners and our fans coming into this year, and that commitment will remain through the season finale at Phoenix. We have tremendous respect and appreciation for all of our employees, and we will work diligently to assist them during this transition to find new opportunities beyond the 2024 race season."
'This is a pivotal year for me' - Chase Briscoe on his future of racing being a veteran on the SHR team
The closure leaves Cup drivers Chase Briscoe, Noah Gragson, Josh Berry and Ryan Preece in transition, as well as Xfinity Series drivers Cole Custer and Riley Herbst.
Here's a quick look at what could happen with those drivers:
Briscoe, who is 16th in the Cup standings, is the driver most often mentioned as a possibility to drive for Wood Brothers Racing next year with Harrison Burton on the hot seat as he struggles for the third consecutive year. Briscoe was in an option year with SHR and can now start to have more extensive talks with other teams.
Briscoe said he has no idea where he will drive next year.
"Crazy time," Briscoe said in a video on X, formerly known as Twitter. "I never thought this day would come. ... I just hope all of the guys and gals at this place finds a great opportunity because each and every single person here deserves it."
Berry, at 19th in the standings in his rookie season and who has surged over the last month, was under contract with SHR for next year but obviously is now looking for a ride. He doesn't have much personal sponsorship but now will be talking heavily to sponsors and teams. Whether he remains in Cup is still to be determined.
Gragson's impressive run in his first season at SHR as he sits 21st in the standings (he'd be 19th if not for a 35-point penalty earlier this year plus what appears to be support from Bass Pro Shops, potentially could give him Cup options either at Front Row Motorsports or other teams.
Preece sits 28th in the standings (he'd be 22nd if not for a 35-point penalty earlier this year) was already looking for next year as his contract was up after this season. His future seems uncertain.
Custer, the former Cup driver and defending Xfinity Series champion who is third in the Xfinity standings, will be driving a car next year but still to be determined whether it is Xfinity or Cup. SHR's Xfinity programs — it not only fields two cars but also supplies cars to other Ford teams — could be siphoned off into a new team. Also, if Haas wants to continue involvement in NASCAR, Custer would be the natural driver for his Haas Automation company to sponsor as it has sponsored Custer for several years and Custer's father, Joe, is an SHR executive who has worked on Haas motorsports programs for decades.
Herbst, seventh in the Xfintiy standings, has sponsorship from Monster Energy, and that should give him options, potentially on the Cup side.
FRM (which would have two seats available) and 23XI will be seeking drivers if they obtain charters and would need sponsorship as well for them, making them possible landing spots for Herbst.
Trackhouse already has a logjam of drivers with Ross Chastain, Shane van Gisbergen and Zane Smith currently under contract and Daniel Suarez expecting to sign an extension soon. There is a possibility the new charter system could limit organizations to three charters, and if that happens, Trackhouse would have to form an alliance with another team, keep van Gisbergen in Xfinity next year or release one of its drivers.
Legacy Motor Club, RFK Racing and JTG Daugherty Racing have all considered expansion but are not expected to be in play for any of the SHR charters. Dale Earnhardt Jr. confirmed to FOX Sports last week that JR Motorsports also is not part of those conversations

What the heck is Push-to-pass software
Indy
Newgarden has been trying to rebuild his reputation in the paddock after IndyCar discovered illegal push-to-pass software on the three Team Penske cars and threw out both Newgarden's win and McLaughlin's third-place finish in the season opener. President Tim Cindric, Newgarden's strategist, is one of several team employees suspended for the race.
I wonder if Austin Cindric is Tim's son ?
Can the Indy 500 be delayed for rain?
As of this post's writing, there is an 80% chance of rain on race day, with thunderstorms predicted throughout the day.
So can the race be postponed? In a word, yes. The Indy 500 has had three complete postponements in its history, the last time being in 2007. Drivers must complete at least 101 laps for the race to be considered official, with the remainder of the race re-scheduled for the following (dry) day. The race has also been shortened eight times according the the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which hosts the Indy 500. The shortest official race was 102 laps in 1976.
This year the weather in Indy is forecast for rain through Wednesday, May 29, 2024, which could mean drivers have to wait a few more days to compete.
Check back to this post for all the latest information about the 2024 Indy 500.
