Indian Shares Recover on Buying of Blue Chips After Plunging in Recent Weeks
BOMBAY, India (AP) -- Indian shares rose Friday as investors bought up blue chips like Infosys Technologies Ltd. and Tata Steel Co. that had fallen to attractive levels after the market's recent drop.
The Bombay Stock Exchange's 30-company benchmark Sensex closed at 10,809, up 143 points, or 1.3 percent. On the rival National Stock Exchange, the 50-stock S&P Nifty rose 32 points, or 1 percent, to 3,210.
Still, there was a lot of volatility in the market, as investors remained nervous after the sharp fall in stock prices over the past two weeks. The Sensex has fallen 14 percent since hitting an all-time high of 12,612 points on May 10.
"The stock market is likely to stay volatile, but the undertone is bullish as long-term fundamentals remain strong," said Clifton De Silva, director at Bombay based brokerage Altina Securities.
Infosys Technologies jumped 3.2 percent to 2,927, while Tata Steel was up 4.9 percent at 538.25 rupees.

That's an excellent point (potential) of $$$$$$$$ flowing
out / back from real estate with no where else for it to go !
And, if we see a drop to the "bullish" level ie. buying oppor. you define ~~~~ there will be a lot of "blood in the
streets" getting to that level. WOW.....we have a real
connumdrum (sp) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;-
Hi EZ², Re: moderate speculation while high valuations.......
Here's what I mean about these two components of the market giving a mixed message.
Relative Valuation has been way above its 90th percentile for a long time. This level of risk exposure by investors is usually not sustained. What is curious is that most of the time in the past when we've seen this sort of high valuation we've also seen high speculation (it being a driving force of the overly high valuations).
But, as we see here,
Speculation is moderate and really has been since last August.
It's almost as though too many people have been at the same party talking to each other about how wonderful the stock market is. Pretty soon they actually start believing each other!
Maybe it's just too much money coming out of real estate with no other place to go that has propped the market up for so long. Whatever the source, to get the Relative Valuation component back down to even the 50th percentile would require a healthy correction. S&P 500 at 1055 would bring about such a level. That seems painfully far away. So does NASDAQ 1900, but that's about what we'd need to get back to a 50th percentile reading.
Best regards, Tom
YOU are one (1) smart, persistent, consistent, patient and
diligent man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I applaud your expertise !!!!!!!!!
EZ
Hi EZ², Summer Time Blues...................
No matter what I'm sure it will be interesting to see how it plays out. For me, this period has been different in that we've had relatively low speculation in the larger and smaller cap areas in recent times. Yet, the market's been willing to support P/E levels in both arenas which required rapidly growing earnings to be sustained.
I do look forward to putting some of my reserved cash back to work. All the market has to do is provide enough of a discount to encourage me!
Best regards, Tom
THANKS kavi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EZ
The market(s)......world wide ie. India notation from kavi.....are just like a "cat on a hot tin roof" right now.
The least little and/or big news note is making tremors
felt nearly every day......people REALLY skittish !!
Of course, as WISE investors / smart buyErZ......we know
to NOT follow the herd !!!! 8-) I buy into the fact that
a LOT of "hedge fund mgrs." and "margin players".....and to
some degree "shorts" in certain things (like commodities) have been getting crushed ---- WHICH drives more selling which drives the market down more. Yesterday's "dead cat bounce" was something I thought might happen early in the morning ( although hoping the correction was over ).
I really think we have more loss to go.......nothing really big to drive market up before Q2 reporting starts coming in near June 28th or so ------ coupled w/ timing of Bernanke's
next report ( man, I think ole' Ben may be in over his head !?!?!?!?!? ) ----- on the flip side ~~~~ LOTS to take it down ie. inflation, dollar, Iran, etc.
It's going to be a LOOOOOONNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG summer !!!
Tom,
Seeing very similar results here. Out of all the MFD's
I hold.....in the past two weeks........the only thing
which has risen is ABNDX ( Amer.Funds Bond Fd. of Amer. )
and "slightly" at that.
Send me a RED ALERT when those buy limits kick in !!!!!
8-)
Entry point for indian ETFs
Indian SENSEX index is currently at 10,800 and its all time high was 12600. Based on my little reading the fair value
should be some where around 8500 which needs atleast 30% drop from current level.
Regards
Kavi.
Today looked pretty solid until that last hour! Almost looked like a turning point. It's harder to judge now. People are very quick to take profits, I guess.
Best regards, Tom
Hi EZ, Most all of my ETFs are now trading below their 26 week moving averages. Most still need to fall another 5-10% before they start tripping Buy Limits, however.
My non-US ETFs have fallen, too. Again they need to dip deeper before I start shelling out serious cash.
My one bond fund, CHY, has actually been rising in the midst of all this crazyness. I guess that's people shifting to the relative conservative aspect of a bond fund - even if it's corporate bonds.
Best regards, Tom
Hi Kavi, Wow, I guess if you're going to fly with the Bird, there's a chance you can crash with the Bird!
Scary!
Now we need to figure a good way to judge an entry point.

Bad luck (may be good luck who knows). I had a limit order
to buy at 45.00 for IIF, it has only gone down to 47 so i could not buy. I just wanted to buy 1/4 of total shares at 200 day moving average and keep adding the rest as it goes down. IIF premium come down to 1% from 14 since jan 06.
IFN is not coming down at all, i am not going to touch it.
It is amazing even after indian SENSEX index is down 7% these
ETFs don't pull back that much.

A snippet from a respected writer on markets...........
"This hurts quite a bit. We have these corrections every six months or so, but this one hurts more than most do. Last year we had one in April and another in October. This one has lasted for five days and really does sting. I want you to know I feel your pain and I don’t enjoy this. Don’t worry, though, because there is nothing wrong with our stocks fundamentally and I think things will be fine.
The problem is that we won’t have another earnings cycle for a couple of months. I think our stocks will firm up in late June and early July in earnings pre-announcement season, but until then, I think we’ll be in a very choppy and erratic market. I wish I had better news for you."

EZ - IFN/IIF indian ETFs FREEFALL TODAY
Indian stock indexes corrected 7% today. Expect a freefall
in IFN and IIF etfs.
IIF all time high is around 58, yesterday closing price 48.
200 day moving average around 45. I have a feeling it will
go below 200 day moving average today. Still not a big bargain
yet, but much better than starting AIM earlier. It might become a good entry point unless this downtown turns in to a BEAR market which is a good possibility.
IFN has a hefty premium much more than IIF which i think will evaporate during this downturn.

Hey, any thoughts on FPX ??
Non-US ETFs are hot this week......
The AIM program signalled sales of 5% of each of the following non-US ETFs:
EWG, EWJ, EWU, EWW, EZU and FXI.
Sell signals were also generated in IJS, IJT and IYJ on the domestic scene.
It's been quite a while since we've had any buying of any significance in any of the ETF accounts. I assume we'll get a chance to put cash back to work eventually and don't mind the profitable selling that's been taking place.

Here's EWW's histogram since we started this investment about 18 months ago......
The Mexico ETF trade occurred just a day earlier than my sale in the one individual Mexican stock I own, ICA.
It is nice to see the improvements in both of these holdings in the last year or so. The "reverse split" that happened at the end of 2005 made me a bit nervous in that I've not had a lot of good luck with stocks that have done so over the years. So far we've been doing okay with this one.
Best regards, Tom
Hi EZ, We tripped a trade in EWW today for a sell of about 7% of the holding. I also noted that several of the other non US ETFs are near their own sell points in one of the accounts.
All that's happy news to me.

SEC Approves Silver Exchange-Traded Fund

Securities Regulator Approves First Silver Exchange-Traded Fund
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday approved the registration for Barclays Global Investors' planned silver exchange-traded fund -- the first such fund to track silver.
SEC spokesman John Heine said the statement has been "declared effective," clearing the way for the securities to be sold in the markets.
The fund begins trading Friday on the American Stock Exchange. Barclays spokeswoman Christine Hudacko said it is the first exchange-traded fund to be tied to silver.
An exchange-traded fund tracks a commodity like an index fund but trades more like a stock, rising and falling throughout the day as it is bought and sold.
There are exchange-traded funds tied to the price of gold. State Street's streetTracks Gold Shares ETF has attracted more than $6.5 billion since the fund was launched in November 2004. Barclays Global Investors currently holds about $671 million in its iShares Comex Gold Trust, which began trading in January 2005.
Silver and gold have recently been trading at multi-decade highs. Gold rose $1.20 to $637.50 per ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Silver fell 10 cents to $12.69 per ounce. Earlier this month, silver moved above $14, a peak not seen since 1983.

New Funds from Rydex
Rockville, Md.-based Rydex Investments plans to introduce six style-specific funds on Tuesday that are tied to large- , mid- and small-capitalization stocks with growth or value characteristics.
Rydex says the planned ETFs offer concentrated exposure to "pure style" benchmark indexes created by Standard & Poor's and Citigroup. Stephen Sachs, director of trading at Rydex, said the ETFs are geared to investors looking for "less watered-down" exposure to growth and value stocks than blended, market-capitalization weighted indexes.

The advent of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) has brought a new way to use AIM on various Market Sectors. They offer an easy way to own and trade entire sector indexes without the expense and inconvenience of the typical open end mutual fund. Closed End ETFs (CEFs) offer yet another interesting alternative and some extra BETA because of their Premium/Discount range.
With AIM, we like to make our trades when the price/per share meets our requirements. With traditional mutual funds we never know exactly what the end of the day will bring - but that's what the basis of our our trade price will be. Using ETFs we can use "Good 'til Cancelled" Limit Orders to trade when our price is met, or trade any time during the day at the current bid/ask prices.
Diversified mutual funds usually don't have the ingredients that AIM likes - Frequency and Amplitude of price change. This is because their money is spread over many different business sectors of the economy all moving in their own directions. Individual sector funds look as though they will give us many more opportunities to capture volatility than do traditional diversified mutual funds. As this graphic shows, individual sectors perform well at different times in the economic and market cycles.
ETFs can be selected from a wide variety of industrial sectors, individual country funds and also from "value" or "growth" by size of capitalization. This offers us the chance to build a portfolio of our own that is easily as diversified as any mutual fund. If we use ETFs we preserve much of the frequency and amplitude of each sector that AIM uses for creating trading profits. Each sector seeks its own level while AIM adjusts properly for the changes. Overall the portfolio benefits from extensive diversification while also improving AIM trade related returns.
An interesting article on building the "ultimate buy-and-hold" portfolio can be read at:

Constructing an ETF portfolio using the component ideas mentioned in the article would give an individual a very well diversified portfolio. Here is my account compared to similar indexes over a year's time:
