Mixed outlook for WFC into Q3 results
Wells Fargo (WFC) is slated to report Q3 results on Monday, October 17 before the market open with a conference call scheduled for 9:30 am ET. Analysts are looking for EPS of 72c on revenue of $20.22B. The consensus range is 66c-80c for EPS, and $19.51B-$20.74B for revenue, according to First Call. Less exposed than some other large banks to poorly performing investment banking operations, Wells Fargo is expected by analysts to report record quarterly results. Wells Fargo's core retail lending businesses, meanwhile, are expected to perform fairly well, and Bank of America recently initiated the stock with a Buy and $33 target. Furthermore, Wells may benefit from lower loan loss reserves and reduced mortgage net charge-offs, as JP Morgan earlier this week said that it was experiencing these trends. However, JP Morgan said that it was seeing NIM pressure, and Wells' NIM is also likely to be constrained. In addition, Wells is still facing the overhang of the legal problems created by its mortgage foreclosure practices.
Citi to report Q3 results in difficult environment
Citigroup (C) is slated to report Q3 results on Monday, October 17 before the market open with a conference call scheduled for 11:00 am ET. Analysts are looking for EPS of 82c on revenue of $19.59B. The consensus range is 60c-99c for EPS, and $17.76B-$24.36B for revenue, according to First Call. JP Morgan (JPM) earlier this week reported stronger than expected Q3 EPS, but the upside largely stemmed from an accounting gain. JP Morgan outlined several challenges it's facing, including weak investment bank revenue and pressure on its NIM, and Citigroup is probably coping with the same difficulties. On a positive note, Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit earlier this week confirmed that the bank had been profitable in Q3, Bloomberg reported. Meanwhile on October 5, Wells Fargo initiated Citigroup with a Market Perform rating and $30-$32 target. Wells thought that Citigroup's valuation was attractive at that time, when the company's stock was trading around $24, versus around $27-$28 today. However, Wells predicted that Citigroup's shares would experience near-term volatility due to a slower growth environment and European sovereign challenges. Of course, investors will be interested in hearing Citigroup's outlook on the U.S. economy and the European sovereign debt situation, Any statements by Citigroup about the impact of the Volcker Rule will also likely interest investors. Citigroup reported on September 15 that its credit card delinquencies had fallen to 3.35% in August, versus 3.39% in July. However, the bank's credit card write-offs did rise to 6.92% in August from 6.64% in July
GOOG paid clocks increased 28% vs last year

Adding AA in AH tonight. Buying on the dips. I still like it.
Alcoa sees aerospace demand growing 6%-7% in FY11
Aerospace, where order backlogs top eight years, and automotive, where increasing government requirements for fuel efficiency are driving more demand for light-weight solutions, are expected to remain strong. Alcoa projects aerospace demand will continue to grow in the second half of 2011 and the year-end growth rate will be between 6%-7%. In the automotive market, Alcoa projects continued growth in the second half and a year-over-year improvement of 3%-5%
Alcoa raises 2011 China growth rate to 17%
Increasing demand in China, where the company has raised its 2011 growth projection two-percentage points to 17%, will mostly offset declines in Europe and other regions. On a global basis, Alcoa's year-over-year end market outlook remains positive.
Alcoa reiterates 2011 growth rate of 12%; sees aluminum demand doubling by 2020
Management said, "We continue to forecast a growth rate of 12 percent for 2011, with a slower pace in the second half of the year, and reaffirm our long-term forecast for a doubling of aluminum demand by 2020. Alcoa is a confident company in a nervous world. We are well prepared for whatever lies ahead, with more cash on hand, lower debt and continued focus on profitable growth."
AA reports Q3 revs $6.4B, consensus $6.24
I marked me all those with particulary good earnings coming AA PEP JPM GOOG, but looking at the price I think earnings weather are alerady calculated in the price or trend will continue together with overall trend. Just with JPM and PEP I see more upside......GOOG and AA not sure.
IBM is high already, I dont know how much higher, even if earnings are good, can it go? Drop seems inevitable
ILMN dropped from $40.00 to $26.00 on lower guidance.
APKT dropped from $43.00 to $27.00 then bounced back on lower guidance.
---
Earnings are 50/50 shot, don't let anyone fool you. The stock will react which ever way the market at that given minute thinks, if it tanks even just $2.00 post report and more volume piles up, it will just keep tanking, without anyone taking the time to actually read the report.
Which is why the next session is more important, gives you a chance to get some of these stocks @ a discount, if of course, the report was not that bad.
Did ILMN and APKT droped on bad earnings?
Ive seen stocks droping even on good earnings after the report, just following the chart and overall trend more then the earnings data ......
No GOOG ? Strange...
Sticky, thanks Land.
Always read though the report, even a beat does not always guarantee a strong upward move. How far out of the consensus did they report, did they give any guidance for the next Q and the full year etc...
Even with a beat on all levels, a stock sometimes might not rally as hard as many would expect, that of course depends on many variables : how far is the stock from its 52wk high, what is the market trend, how is the rest of the sector doing ? etc...
There is no such thing as always, in the stock market, everything is always changing.
---
As for MON. The stock reported earnings on the 5th (Wednesday). Before its release, the stock was sitting at $63.00, by Friday, the stock was nearing $72.00.
MON reported Q4 (22c) vs (27c) consensus (smaller loss than expected)
Their Q1 and FY12 guidance was in line with expectations (sometimes its all it takes to move the stock higher, other times its the opposite).
It did not recieve any downgrades since its report, rather it got 1 upgrade from JPM with price target raised to $73.00 from $70.00.
---
Put it this way, there are some stocks that traders know are movers on reports (GOOG/AAPL/IBM etc...mostly tech) and the focus post report usually comes back to them, other names might not even react after a report, simply because there is just no interest.
> For huge moves on ER, focus on tech stocks (look @ ILMN/APKT from this week).
---
Why is that all the stocks go down after earnings. Is it bec its already calculated in the price of the stock or they just cant fight the trend. And then u have bad companies, that go up despite of bad earnings, just bec of the trend or chart reversal...etc....
Like MON was downgraded, then had good earnings and went up this week with the uptrend in general and turned around on Friday , when also general trend reversed.
Or YUM had good earnings and cant pull it off after the last drop previus week etc...
Just interested how this works.
Notable names will be starred to make it easier to spot what is important.
