Basically they invest money and expertise into Licensed Producers or soon to be ones in return for a percentage of their production and revenues. The percentage can vary from 10% to 50% roughly and is often referred to as a stream or royalty.
The big advantage of this model is they gain the revenue without the cost, but it takes some capital to get started before the first streams start to kick in revenue
