Michele Bachmann Laments That 'The Gay Community Have So Bullied The American People'

Submitted by Brian Tashman on Monday, 3/10/2014 3:30 pm

Still reeling from the demise of Arizona’s “right-to-discriminate” bill, Michele Bachmann [ http://www.rightwingwatch.org/category/people/michele-bachmann ] said last week that she is tired of gay people “bullying” her and the American people.

The Minnesota congresswoman told [ https://soundcloud.com/thelarslarsonshow/highlights-from-cpac-day-1-3 ] talk show host Lars Larson [ http://www.rightwingwatch.org/category/people/lars-larson ] in an interview at CPAC that the gay community distorted the Arizona bill by making it about gay rights — even though the bill’s sponsor himself said [ http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/arizona-anti-gay-fact-check ] it was about same-sex marriage.

“There’s nothing about gays in there, but the gay community decided to make this their measure,” Bachmann said. “And the thing that I think is getting a little tiresome is the gay community have so bullied the American people and they have so intimidated politicians that politicians fear them and they think they get to dictate the agenda everywhere. Well, not with the Constitution you don’t.”

She added that gay people and “activist judges” are trying to take away her freedom: “If you want take away my religious liberties, you can advocate for that but you do it through the constitutional process and you don’t intimidate and no politician should give away my religious liberties or yours.”

Michele Bachmann says anti-gay bullying "not a federal issue"

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Alex Limon says he came to a Michele Bachmann rally here for one reason: To ask the Republican presidential candidate what she intends to do about school bullying in her district that reportedly targets gays.

He got to ask his question, but he didn't get a lengthy answer.

"That's not a federal issue," Bachmann said, before moving on to the shake the hand of the next person waiting to speak to her.

Limon's question grew out of a recent New York Times report [ http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/13/us/13bully.html ] about a Minnesota school system that's largely located in Bachmann's congressional district that's become a flashpoint for a controversy about how to discuss homosexuality with students.

The paper reported that there have been a spate of suicides in the school district and that the Justice Department is investigating anti-gay bullying in the system.

Bachmann co-owns a clinic with her husband, Marcus, that engages in therapy seeking to "convert" patients of homosexuality [ http://www.cbsnews.com/news/michele-bachmanns-husband-my-clinic-does-gay-to-straight-therapy-but-its-not-our-agenda ].

CPAC 2014 - On Wisconsin! Turning Blue States Red

Published on Mar 8, 2014 by The ACU

'They're Not Dead Yet': Planning The Demise Of Labor Unions At CPAC

By Dave Jamieson
Posted: 03/08/2014 2:53 pm EST Updated: 03/09/2014 12:59 pm EDT

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. -- Any right-wing confab probing the power of "big labor" suffers from an inherent contradiction: The ranks of unionized workers in the U.S. have never been so thinned, with less than 7 percent [ http://www.bls.gov/news.release/union2.nr0.htm ] of the private sector now belonging to a labor union. A successful anti-union discussion therefore needs to strike a delicate balance, celebrating unions' diminished state while simultaneously insisting they pose as grave a threat as ever.

This rhetorical needle was ably threaded on Saturday morning by anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist, who moderated a panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference entitled "On Wisconsin! Turning Blue States Red [just above]." The panel sought to answer a strategic question for the right: "After Wisconsin and beyond right-to-work laws, what’s possible now to free workers and students from unionism?"

While acknowledging that union membership has fallen to a historic low, Norquist began the discussion by claiming that unions are the greatest political force in America at the moment.

"They're not dead yet -- they're in decline," Norquist said. "They raise maybe $7 billion a year in dues. Imagine how much they spend of that on politics. They are the largest political player in American politics and will be for some time. What can we do about it?"

Better known for his tax work, Norquist has quickly become a major figure among anti-union activists through the Center for Worker Freedom, an arm of his group Americans for Tax Reform. Norquist's crew bankrolled the anti-union billboards [ http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/22/us-autos-uaw-election-analysis-idUSBREA1L13220140222 ] plastered throughout the Chattanooga, Tenn., area in the runup to the United Auto Workers' ill-fated union vote at a Volkswagen plant there last month.

The UAW's narrow loss, by a 53 to 47 margin, was a stinging defeat for organized labor and a major setback for the union's plans in the South. The UAW has accused Norquist and a host of Republican politicians -- including Sen. Bob Corker (Tenn.) -- of unfairly meddling in the election as third parties and possibly tainting the results.

Many UAW opponents on the right said they were concerned the union's presence would hurt the plant's expansion plans or make it harder to attract new businesses to Tennessee. But one of Norquist's panelists, Terry Scanlon, president of the Capital Research Center, seemed to acknowledge Saturday that the true fight in Chattanooga was a political one. This was the "unmentionable" that Scanlon nonetheless mentioned.

"What is really good here is the unmentionable: There will be so much less money without all these dues, 90-some percent in most cases, going to Democrats," Scanlon said during the panel. "Without the money there, it's not going to happen. This is great news. It's great news."

Norquist didn't dwell on his Tennessee victory, instead steering the discussion toward a larger picture: how the right can fundamentally weaken unions through state legislation. That includes collective bargaining rollbacks like the monumental one carried out by Gov. Scott Walker (R) in Wisconsin in 2011, as well as right-to-work laws like those recently passed in Michigan and Indiana. Right-to-work laws forbid contracts between companies and unions that require all workers to pay the union for bargaining on their behalf, thereby diminishing unions' clout.

The panelists agreed that after seeing Michigan, the cradle of the U.S. auto industry, go right-to-work in 2012, almost anything seemed possible.

"The good news is you have 24 states today with a Republican governor and both houses of the legislature who are Republican," Scanlon said. "You have a shot at right-to-work in any of these states. ... It can be done. It takes time, and you have to set the mechanism up even if you don't have a majority of Republicans."

F. Vincent Vernuccio, director of labor policy at the free-market think tank Mackinac Center for Public Policy, said Republican governors and state lawmakers needn't worry about political repercussions from fast-tracking a right-to-work law through the legislature. Republicans are still standing in places like Indiana, he said.

"When a politician says right-to-work is simply unattainable and they're worried about their job, look at the states that passed right-to-work," Vernuccio said.

Public-sector union membership remains robust, at 35 percent [ http://www.bls.gov/news.release/union2.nr0.htm ], but anti-union conservatives smell vulnerability. As Norquist noted, the prevailing attitude used to be that "you can't do anything about the public sector." That's no longer the case, particularly after Wisconsin, where most public-sector workers have lost their collective bargaining rights (and where public-sector unions have since lost many of their dues-paying members).

Panelist Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said that the key to gutting public-sector bargaining rights in Wisconsin was deference to the cause throughout Wisconsin's right flank. It was agreed that they would all share mutually in the glory, Priebus said.

"Americans for Prosperity, Tea Party groups, the GrandSons of Liberty, the 9-12'ers were involved -- it was a total and complete agreement that nobody cared who got the credit, that everyone was going to run down the tracks together and help each other where we could," Priebus said.

Despite such victories, Norquist warned that Obama "owed" something to unions after failing to shepherd through Congress the Employee Free Choice Act, a bill that would have made it easier for workers to unionize. Norquist said it was a political mistake for Obama to prioritize the Affordable Care Act before EFCA, since he could have helped grow the ranks of organized labor to Democrats' benefit. But that failure has left him with a debt to unions, Norquist argued.

"That's why you're seeing the National Labor Relations Board out there putting their thumbs on the scale, and that's going to be a big problem for us in the next three years," Norquist said of the independent agency that enforces labor law. Obama has "stacked" the five-member board, in Norquist's words. (He has appointed three members of his own party and two from the opposition, in keeping with tradition.)

With Democrats holding a majority in the Senate and Obama in the White House, there's little chance of any anti-union laws coming out of Washington anytime soon. But the panelists said they see plenty more opportunity at the state level. When Norquist asked Vernuccio to rattle off some right-to-work targets, he didn't hesitate.

"We're looking at Ohio. We're looking at Missouri. We're looking at Kentucky," Vernuccio said. "The fire of worker freedom is shining brightly, and it is spreading."

Real Time with Bill Maher: How Dangerous is the Hate Talk From the Right?

Uploaded on Mar 22, 2009 by gbCerberus37 [ http://www.youtube.com/user/gbCerberus37 ]

I neither claim ownership nor profit in any way from uploading this clip. Viewer's minds, however, profit from having seen it. If you want more, get HBO.

http://www.hbo.com/real-time-with-bill-maher#/
http://crooksandliars.com/heather/real-time-how-dangerous-hate-talk-right

Story Olbermann mentions: http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2009/02/know-this-if-nothing-else-this-was-hate.html

Partial Transcript:

Maher: Listening to people like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck these days, I cannot figure out whether these right wingers are more dangerous when they're in power or when they're out of power, because when they're out of power, you know their paranoid, their paranoia goes off the charts. This Glenn Beck guy, I wouldn't even give him the time of day except he's a big star now on Fox and a lot of people believe, and he's talking about FEMA concentration camps.

Olbermann: Yeah...

Maher: He says we are headed toward socialism, totalitarianism...

Olbermann: Yeah...

Maher:...beyond your wildest imagination, but apparently not beyond his wildest imagination.

Washington: Right, right.

Sorkin: Did you see what he said about that? He said I can't prove these FEMA concentration camps, but let me tell you about them anyway.

Washington: Yeah, yeah.

Sorkin: You'd think it would be the opposite.

Olbermann: Can I quote Madeleine Albright?

Maher: Please.

Olbermann: He's nuts.

Maher: You know I would never be the person who says that you have to watch what you say because some borderline nut...no really...I'm not for that. No, no, that's an argument that's given a lot. You can't say this because a borderline might take it and then do this. I'm sorry but that's the price of living in a free speech country and I do want to live in one because I make my living at it. Okay. But you know I must say Tim McVeigh in 1995 if you recall, this was the same kind of talking that made him blow up that building.

Olbermann: The guy who walked into the church in Tennessee said in his statement to the police that he did this because he could not shoot the liberals who were on the lists from Bernie Goldberg, and Bernie Goldberg has proceeded to come out with another list of liberals and this time I'm on the list so this is even more vivid in my mind now. So yeah you're absolutely right about that. I think what you're seeing with, I mean I have been accused occasionally of sort of bordering on Howard Beale. Hey I got nothing on this guy for Howard Beale.

This is, you know in the last major economic crisis of this nation we spewed forth Father Coughlin. Well this is Father Coughlin with a crew cut. This is Father Coughlin on TV. This is, he's, who knows what he's going to say next week because if we can't understand what he's saying now he also has that same threshold. He doesn't know what he's saying now. It just sounds great. It's wonderful. It is a manic depressive high.

Austin Ruse Says Left-Wing University Professors 'Should All Be Taken Out And Shot'

Submitted by Brian Tashman on Wednesday, 3/12/2014 2:05 pm

While filling in [ http://www.afa.net/Radio/show.aspx?id=2147491277&tab=audio&audio=2147544182 ] today for American Family Radio host Sandy Rios, Austin Ruse [ http://www.rightwingwatch.org/category/people/austin-ruse ] commented on the media frenzy surrounding a Duke University freshman who announced that she is a porn actress.

Ruse, who leads the ultraconservative Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute (C-Fam [ http://www.rightwingwatch.org/category/organizations/catholic-family-and-human-rights-institute ]), promptly blamed the college’s women’s studies department and said that “the hard left, human-hating people that run modern universities” should “all be taken out and shot.”

[audio, "Ruse: University Professors Should Be Shot", https://soundcloud.com/rightwingwatch/ruse-university-professors , embedded]

That is the nonsense that they teach in women’s studies at Duke University, this is where she learned this. The toxic stew of the modern university is gender studies, it’s “Sex Week,” they all have “Sex Week” and teaching people how to be sex-positive and overcome the patriarchy. My daughters go to a little private religious school and we pay an arm and a leg for it precisely to keep them away from all of this kind of nonsense. I do hope that they go to a Christian college or university and to keep them so far away from the hard left, human-hating people that run modern universities, who should all be taken out and shot.

HATE SPEECH

Can you find the hate speech hidden within this video?
I was inspired to make this video because of the tantrums I've seen religious people throw when they see a billboard stating that atheists are good without God, or that nobody needs Christ, etc (really benign stuff). Meanwhile, I've seen billboards that have endured for decades, across the street from elementary schools, suggesting that you'll burn in agony if you're not a Christian. Crickets. There's quite a double standard, and if the tactics were reversed, aneurysms, heart attacks, and strokes would ensue - basically hardcore outrage.

Ben Carson: U.S. Like Nazi Germany 'Because Of The PC Police' (VIDEO)

Caitlin MacNeal – March 12, 2014, 1:32 PM EDT

Fox News contributor and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson on Monday compared American society to Nazi Germany.

"I mean, [our society is] very much like Nazi Germany," Carson told Breitbart News [ http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2014/03/12/Exclusive-Dr-Ben-Carson-Our-Government-Is-Like-Nazi-Germany ], after declaring [ http://www.thenewyorkmeeting.com/about-the-ny-meeting.html ] that we were living in a "Gestapo age." "And I know you're not supposed to say 'Nazi Germany,' but I don't care about political correctness. You know, you had a government using its tools to intimidate the population. We now live in a society where people are afraid to say what they actually believe."

Carson listed multiple aspects of America that he believes intimidates people into silence.

"And it's because of the PC police, it's because of politicians, it's because of news. It's all of these things are combining to stifle people’s conversation," he said. "The reason that is so horrible is because the only way that you have harmony and reach consensus is by talking. But if, in fact, people are afraid to talk, you never reach consensus. And instead you grow further and further apart. And that’s exactly what’s happening, creating a horrible schism that will destroy our nation if we don’t fix it."

Just a month ago, Carson said at a fundraising event [ http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ben-carson-nazi-reference ] that America could become the next Nazi Germany because progressives want to "fundamentally change who we are."

The Democratic National Committee on Wednesday issued a statement saying that they fact-checked Carson's claim and found that, "America is actually NOT like Nazi Germany."

"However, Carson (a retired neurosurgeon & Fox News contributor) IS being tested by the Republican National Committee as a top-tier presidential candidate in 2016," DNC Press Secretary Michael Czin wrote in an email statement. "Welcome to the future of the Republican Party."

'Sundays Are The Worst' Website Urges Christians To Tip Better

03/11/2014
It's not easy being a restaurant server, and the job is even harder when people leave lousy tips. That's why Pastor Chad Roberts of Preaching Christ Church in Kingsport, Tennessee has set up a website for servers to vent about waiting on Sunday church crowds called "Sundays are the Worst [ http://www.sundaysaretheworst.com/ ]."
He explains on the website:
"Christians have a bad reputation when it comes to Sunday lunch times. Being a server at a restaurant is even harder; bad tips/ rude people/ more complaints-- the list goes on. As a church we want to change! This site is a place of pure honesty and testimony for those who serve at a local restaurant to share how they get treated when the church crowd comes in. Compared to a normal weekday, Sundays are the worst."
Roberts told the Times News [ http://www.timesnews.net/article/9073971/kingsport-church-launches-website-for-servers-to-vent-about-sunday-church-crowd ] that he came up with the idea for the website after hearing about the story of Alois Bell [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/justin-lee/are-christians-christianitys-worst-enemies_b_2586339.html ], a pastor who wrote on her receipt in lieu of a tip, "I give God ten percent, why do you get 18." He wanted to address the "disconnect" between the serving community and the church crowd that he perceived.
He said that some people don't realize how much their behavior reflects on their faith, explaining, "That’s the purpose of this campaign, to cause them to realize that their attitude matters and it affects those around them." ...

Ted Cruz Still Thinks The GOP Can Repeal Obamacare While Obama Is In Office

by Mollie Reilly
Posted: 03/09/2014 1:03 pm EDT Updated: 03/10/2014 11:59 am EDT

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is still not willing to give up his crusade against the Affordable Care Act.

During an interview with ABC's "This Week" airing Sunday, Cruz said he believes Republicans could repeal "every single word" of President Barack Obama's signature legislation -- even while the president remains in office.

ABC's Jonathan Karl pressed Cruz to explain why he believes repeal is still worth pursuing:

KARL: We can acknowledge that that's not going to happen while Barack Obama is president, right?

CRUZ: Yes, I'll give you one scenario where it could. If there's one things that unifies politicians of both parties, you know, their top priority is preserving their own hide. And if enough Congressional Democrats realize they either stand with ObamaCare and lose, or they listen to the American people and have a chance at staying in office, that's the one scenario we could do it in 2015. If not, we'll do it in 2017.

KARL: So you honestly think there's a chance that you can get ObamaCare repealed, every word, as you say?

CRUZ: Every single word.

KARL: With Obama in the White House?

CRUZ: You know, what's funny, Jon, is the media treats that as a bizarre proposition.

KARL: Well, it is. CRUZ: Because...

(CROSSTALK)

CRUZ: It is...

KARL: It is a bizarre proposition.

CRUZ: It is the most unpopular law in the country. Millions of people have lost their jobs, have lost their health care, have been forced into part-time work, have their premiums skyrocketing. And right now, Washington isn't listening to those people. That's how we win elections and that's also how we repeal ObamaCare.

The freshman senator has been one of the most vocal critics of the health care reform law. Last fall, he led the charge to tie funding for Obamacare to a continuing resolution to the fund the government -- a strategy that ultimately shut down the government for 16 days [ http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/16/politics/shutdown-showdown/ ], cost $2 billion [ http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/federal-government-shutdown-cost-2-billion-in-lost-productivity-omb-report-says/2013/11/07/e883c3ec-47f2-11e3-bf0c-cebf37c6f484_story.html ] in lost productivity and made no changes to the health care law. The shutdown also took a toll on Cruz's popularity, with a CNN/ORC International [ http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/10/22/cnn-poll-gop-tea-party-unfavorables-at-all-time-highs/ ] poll finding the senator's approval rating dropping to 23 percent last October.

Cruz has said he has no regrets, and has instead tried to pin blame for the shutdown on his rivals.

"I think it was absolutely a mistake for President Obama and Harry Reid to force a government shutdown," Cruz told [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/29/ted-cruz-government-shutdown_n_4515279.html ] Karl in a December interview.

In January, Cruz again attempted [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/16/ted-cruz-obamacare_n_4612582.html ] to attach amendments defunding Obamacare to a major bill -- this time, the $1.1 trillion omnibus spending package. However, his Senate colleagues quickly shut down the proposal.

Mike Huckabee: Treat Female Opponents As 'Special Treasure' With 'Sense Of Pedestal'

03/10/2014
Female candidates should be treated with a "sense of pedestal," former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said during a recent interview with The New Republic while discussing a potential presidential run against Hillary Clinton.
While male adversaries are "common" in the political sphere, female opponents demand "a sense of pedestal," Huckabee told TNR reporter Nora Caplan-Bricker, according to Salon [ http://www.salon.com/2014/03/10/huckabee_on_women_treat_female_opponents_as_special_treasure_with_sense_of_pedestal/ ]. The story on Huckabee will appear in the next issue of TNR.
Reflecting on his own experience running against female candidates, the former preacher explained that "it’s a very different approach." Huckabee beat out Democrat Charlie Cole Chaffin in the 1994 race for Arkansas lieutenant governor and later won a 2002 gubernatorial reelection campaign against Democrat Jimmie Lou Fisher.
"[F]or those of us who have some chivalry left, there’s a level of respect," Huckabee told TNR. "You treat some things as a special treasure; you treat other things as common."
"I’ll put it this way," Huckabee added, "I treat my wife very differently than I treat my chums and my pals. I wouldn’t worry about calling them on Valentine’s Day, opening the door for them, or making sure they were OK."
[...]
A staunch opponent of the Affordable Care Act's contraception mandate [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/26/obamacare-contraception-mandate_n_3660480.html ], Huckabee faced criticism in January for accusing Democrats of convincing women to rely on the government for controlling "their libidos."
"And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control, because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it," Huckabee said [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/23/mike-huckabee-women_n_4653426.html ] at a Republican National Committee meeting.
Refusing to back down from his controversial remarks, Huckabee told The New Republic he would not allow others to "dictate to me a lexicon of words I can use." Huckabee explained that limiting one's word choice means "your creativity is being stifled as a writer because it might upset someone!"

Top 5 Most Annoying Conservative & Christian Women

Uploaded on Jul 21, 2011 by flammable2002 [ http://www.youtube.com/user/flammable2002 ]

A list of the 5 most annoying christian conservative women, as of 2011. These women are not only dumb and loud, but their pervasive ignorance is also dangerous and destructive.

ADDENDUM: To all those asking why Michele Bachmann isn't on this list; I'm embarrassed to say that when I made this list...I hadn't actually heard much about her. Since then, as we all know, she's tried and failed at becoming the Republican Presidential Nominee, and provided us with an insightful look at her own stupidity. Were I to remake the list today, I'd probably include her as #3. I still think Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sarah Palin are dumber, more obnoxious, more annoying, and certainly more pervasive than she is. Hasselbeck spews her vitriol day in and day out on the View, damaging the nations collective intellect endlessly. And Sarah Palin almost got elected Vice President, that makes her the scariest thing since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Top 10 Most Annoying Christian & Conservative Men

Uploaded on Dec 18, 2011 by flammable2002

A list of the 10 most annoying christian conservative men, as of 2011. These men are not only dumb, loud, and ridiculous, but their pervasive ignorance is also dangerous and destructive.
By the way, I consider Gretchen Carlson to be a man. Deal with it.

ADDENDUM: I recently had a response from a youtuber that proved me wrong on #10.

"Andrew Brietbart was Jewish not Christian. Do your research." - KennyVaughan

He's right, Breitbart was a Jewish agnostic and had I bothered to research thoroughly enough (i.e. even just googled "Andrew Breitbart religion") I would have discovered this.
So I apologise for the lazy assumption, but I feel somewhat vindicated because of the stance that Breitbart took on so many issues, like calling those Jews who didn't agree with him "Lefty Zionists" and "scientifically provably stupid". Not only that, but his completely dogmatic approach towards his political party reminds me of evangelicals and the orthodox (Yes, he was a republican, don't bother giving me that "Libertarian" bullshit). In short, he had a religious way of thinking even if he wasn't distinctly religious. Add to this an overwhelming support from the Christian Right, who called him a "warrior" and a "friend", and I'd say he was as annoying as any politically active christian extremist. Doesn't change the fact that he was Jewish though. It's still embarrassing to admit.

However, I will end with this quote:

"I consider myself to be a Judeo-Christian. ... I relate to the world view that America has...It's a distinctly Judeo-Christian one and I think that it works." - Andrew Breitbart

If anyone can point out any other areas where I messed up, please let me know. The last thing I want to be is factually inaccurate.

The Best Of The Dish Today

by Andrew Sullivan
Mar 10 2014 @ 9:00pm

The news cycle is so punishing these days you might be forgiven for thinking the Obama era is over. But it isn’t. It’s at its peak in terms of impact, because policies, especially economic ones, take some time to have effect. Five years in, we have enough data – so reading through the Economic Report from the Council of Economic Advisers [ http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/docs/full_2014_economic_report_of_the_president.pdf ; http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/eop/cea/economic-report-of-the-President/2014 ] is therefore a helpful exercise. And it seems to me to be a rather impressive record – and utterly alien from the picture of gloom and dysfunction the Republicans are currently concocting.

I’ll restrict myself to core facts that are not in dispute, rather than the arguments in the report. Take the economy. Despite unprecedented austerity at the state and local government level, it’s now clear that the US has recovered from the Great Recession better than any other economy:

At least we can say with certainty that the stimulus didn’t fail, despite the silly denial in the GOP. The massive debt overhang – always the biggest drag on growth – has also been substantially reduced:

The deficit has come down at a rapid pace, without tipping us back into recession. And a key indicator of future debt – the cost of healthcare – is looking much better than it once did (although the causes for it remain disputed):

Then this amazing chart:

If someone had suggested to me in 2009 that by 2014, after the worst recession since the 1930s and after the huge debt pile-up in the Bush years that the US would be growing steadily, gaining energy independence, and cutting its deficit deeply, I’d have been amazed. We’ve so easily forgotten the extraordinary crisis Obama inherited. We shouldn’t. This presidency was always going to be judged on whether it could return the US to normal governance after the economic calamity of 2007, and after the disastrous wars that were far from over. I fail to see how Obama has failed in any critical respect. Not that it gets him much praise these days. For that we may have to wait for history’s judgment.
