To study the regenerative potential of adipose tissue, Dr. Coleman is actively involved in research projects to quantify the regenerative ability of fat grafting and stromal vascular fractions in battle injuries.
-Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine Biomedical Translational Initiative at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)
*Study to investigate the “use of concentrated endogenous autologous adipose stromal cells in fat grafts for craniofacial trauma” in 20 soldiers; plus another study project to re-treat subjects in five selected cases.
-Co-Investigator with Peter Rubin on four projects funded by the Department of Defense through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs.
*Controlled study “to investigate the effect of adding stromal vascular fraction into the grafted fat for facial and cranial war injuries.”
*Pilot study on “enriched autologous fat grafting for treating pain at amputation sites.”
According to Dr. Coleman
"There is now evidence that the stem cells or messengers in all fat tissues aid in the repair of tissues by bringing in a new blood supply or by directly affecting damaged or aging structures.
