This shutdown bullshit is making television unwatchable. the drama queens in the house are enough to make any rational person puke up their breakfast.
as far as disasters from shutting down the gov, i don't think it is much of a big deal other than a blow to confidence in the market.
newt and bill did one of the best ones ever when we had a two week furlough and then they passed a bill to give retroactive pay for it, so in effect a two week paid vacation. (except the accumulated work was there when you got back)
and they always seem to occur right at the beginning of hunting season, which, back in the days when i and nearly all my compadres partook of the annual freezer-filling in the backcountry (have long since given up hunting as now i don't need to make ends meet that way; i would rather observe and photograph wildlife than interrupt their lives with bullets, but i never exactly considered packing an elk out several miles in multiple trips to be recreation in the first place, as i was in the woods every day anyway so it was sort of a busman's holiday)
but i digress... a few days or even weeks furloughed has little impact on most government workers, particularly if you factor in the retroactive pay that has come every time. Its the people that live check to check on SS and such that will probably be the most impacted. But they will remember who caused them to have to feel like they are being deadbeat on bills if even only for a little while, life interrupted, and it seems even the more conservative ones (at least the non-FOX contingent) seem to be pointing their fingers at the hostage takers. which will help fracture the wingnuts into an even more confused group... i applaud obama for calling bullshit on them.
