Another Day in the (Gun Crazy) U.S.A.

September 11, 2013 edition

Yellowstone National Park, Wyo. -- A 3-year-old girl is dead after she accidentally shot herself with her father’s handgun at a campground over the weekend. The death comes three years after enactment of a federal law that lifted a decades-old ban on the possession of firearms by visitors to most national parks, including Yellowstone. It is also the first shooting death of a child in the park since 1938, when the 13-year-old son of the park’s master mechanic accidentally shot himself in the head with a rifle.

Charlotte, N.C. -- An 11-year-old girl accidentally fatally shot her 19-year-old stepfather after he handed her a handgun about 10:45 p.m. Friday. The man bought the gun less than 24 hours earlier. He apparently thought he had unloaded the gun by removing the magazine, but a bullet remained in the chamber. Note to gun owners: Removing the magazine from a gun doesn’t necessarily remove the bullet that is in the chamber. I’ve chronicled a number of people getting shot by this phantom bullet. Suggestion for gun manufactures: Add a warning label to all guns that have the potential to remain loaded even after the magazine is removed. It would be a good way to make your product safer for your customers and anyone standing nearby when they are handling the weapon.

Several months ago, a lobbyist for an NRA chartered organization in Wisconsin said gun-rights proponents needed only to wait-out the “Connecticut effect” before they could once again start passing laws to loosen restrictions on guns.

The lobbyist predicted we would soon forget what happened at Sandy Hook, and that those who want common-sense gun laws would eventually lose interest and fade away. Then the NRA would once again have our elected representatives all to themselves, just the way they like it.

We need to let the NRA know that this time is different. We are not going away. We won’t forget Sandy Hook, or Aurora, or Columbine, or Virginia Tech, or Tucson, or the 100,000 Americans who are either killed or wounded by guns each year.

You can help. Call, write, email, or FAX your representatives in Washington, D.C. and tell them to support common sense gun controls. Do it today. And do it again next week. And then every week after that until they get the message.

Addendum for August 12, 2013
If today is typical, some 277 Americans will be shot by a gun. And 84 of those who are shot will die.

The story will repeat itself tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that, and on and on and on.

Help stop this slaughter. Please call, write, email, or FAX your representatives in Washington, D.C. and tell them to support common sense gun control. Do it today. And do it again next week. And do it again every week after that until they get the message.
