Another week so rich in tales, you'd think I was making it up. Which is why I link to everything. This week in Georgia, a woman involved in a domestic dispute threw a rifle out the window (perhaps to prevent anyone from being shot in the dispute), only to have it discharge and wound two 17-year-old women shopping in a nearby store. Elsewhere in Georgia, a sheriff's deputy responding to a fire was shot when the heat set off a loaded gun stored in the home. In California, a firefighter responding to a medical alarm call was shot by the homeowner when he tried to gain entrance through a window. In North Carolina, a man showing his gun to his 11-year-old step-daughter was killed when she shot him with the bullet he forgot was still in the chamber, even after removing the gun's magazine. An 18-year-old Colorado woman was shot and killed by a friend after jumping out of a closet to scare him. In Houston, a man carrying a gun in his waistband accidentally shot a fellow passenger on a city bus. And in Chaska, MN, well, nobody's really sure how to explain it, but it sounds like the same family (and maybe even the same man) showed up at the hospital twice in the same week with accidental gunshot wounds, the second time accompanied by his wife, shot by the same bullet that inflicted the second wound.
The fall traditions continued, as well. First, this week saw two football games dedicated to players recently killed in accidental shootings: this time in Bowie, TX, and Carlsbad, NM. The second tradition: hunting accidents. Last weekend was the first weekend of dove hunting season in several states, and correspondingly, I found five hunting-related accidents that wounded six people, including a 10-year-old girl.
In what has become routine gun accident news, this week's compilation includes six gun cleaning accidents, two "home invasion" shootings, three accidents involving law enforcement officers, and one involving an active member of the armed forces.
This week's child victims of GunFAIL were aged 2 months, 8 months, 8, 10, 12, 14, 14, 16 and 16.

1. TOMALES, CA, 8/10/13: Richard William Weller, 58, of Martinez had spent Saturday morning hunting with a group of people, Assistant Chief Deputy Coroner Lt. Keith Boyd said. The group was in a vehicle at a Middle Road property just south of Valley Ford when a firearm discharged, possibly when it fell from a rack, Boyd said. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the shooting at 12:28 p.m. Saturday. Weller was pronounced dead at 1:16 p.m., Boyd said.
2. DERBY, KS, 8/19/13: A Derby resident who sustained an accidental gunshot wound to the abdomen is expected to recover and has been released from the hospital. Timothy Davidson, 46, was transported by EMS to Wesley Hospital on Monday, Aug. 19, with non-life-threatening wounds, according to Derby Police Lt. Tim Brant. Police and EMS were dispatched to the home at about 11:15 a.m. Monday, due to the shooting, he said. “It does appear to be an accident,” Brant said. Davidson was at home at 1035 N. Georgie at the time of the shooting.
3. BURTON, MI, 8/27/13: A man shot himself on Willow Grove Drive in Burton, Aug. 27 at about 4:47p.m., police went to Genesys Regional Medical Center to interview a man who shot himself in the hand. The man told police he was cleaning the gun and forgot there was a live round in the chamber.
4. CARLTON, GA, exact date unknown: A man on Pine Valley Farm Road was taken to the ER at Athens Regional last week after he accidentally shot himself in the ankle while cleaning his 38-caliber revolver.
5. HOUSTON, TX, 8/31/13: An 18-year-old Houston man who was accidentally shot during a social gathering died of his injuries early Saturday, officials said. Erick Reyes was shot about 12:10 a.m. Saturday at a house in the 9200 block of Nyssa Street in northeast Houston, according to the Houston Police Department. Witnesses told police that several friends had gathered at the residence and that one man had a gun, said HPD spokesman John Cannon. "Witnesses say it accidentally went off, striking an 18-year-old male," Cannon said.
6. LYNN HAVEN, FL, 8/31/13: The Lynn Haven Police Department in conjunction with the District 14 Medical Examiner's Office is currently investigating the shooting which killed Anthony Jamar Pickering, 32 years of age of Pensacola. It happened around 1:00am Saturday at 415 Kentucky Avenue in Lynn Haven. At the time of the shooting, the victim's brother, Allan Jermaine Pickering was the only other person present in the home. While the investigation is continuing, Lynn Haven police say preliminary findings suggest that Anthony Jamar Pickering died as the result of an accidental discharge while handling a firearm.
7. GUYTON, GA, 8/31/13: A Guyton woman has been charged with reckless conduct following the accidental shooting of two teenagers. Samantha King, 20, was arrested on Aug. 31 when she threw a rifle off of the porch of a residence, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said. “The firearm discharged, firing into the Griffin Lake store and striking two 17-year-old females,” Ehsanipoor said. The incident occurred during a domestic dispute at a residence near the store.
8. MIDWEST CITY, OK, 8/31/13: A family in Midwest City is grieving the loss of their 20-year-old daughter. They say Destanie Leeson died Saturday night in what can only be described as a freak accident. Destanie's family tells News 9 she was getting ready for a birthday party around 5 p.m. Saturday inside the Chestnut Square Apartments when an old rifle fell, discharged and shot Destanie. Her family says she was painting her nails with a friend at their neighbor's apartment, who kept an old rifle from 1891 loaded on his dresser. Destanie's friend said the rifle fell and hit the wall and shot Destanie.
9. CHICAGO, IL, 8/31/13: Authorities have charged a 20-year-old man in connection with a shooting Saturday morning that left a 21-year-old man dead and another person injured. Vidal Martinez, of the 1300 block of South 58th Street in west suburban Cicero, is charged with one count of first degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. The charges stem from an early-morning shooting Saturday in the 3800 block of South Halsted Street, in the Bridgeport neighborhood. Police said a gunman shot the people after an altercation at a party. One was a 21-year-old Monee resident Daniel Ortiz, died at the scene. Another one of the men shot, also 21, was critically injured. Martinez also allegedly shot himself in the leg while in the car he fled in after the shooting.
10. BOWIE, TX, 8/31/13: A high school football player has been killed in a shooting incident northwest of Denton. In a news release, Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham confirmed 18-year-old Nathan Maki, starting fullback for Denton Guyer High School, was found dead in a pickup up truck in a field close to Bowie. Authorities made the discovery after receiving a call at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Maki was later pronounced dead at Bowie Hospital. According to friend and teammate Tyler Smith, Maki had been hunting with friends during the opening weekend of dove hunting season. Smith said he believes his friend was shot accidentally. The sheriff's office reports that a rifle was found at the scene. “He always used to talk about, 'I’m the safest guy around, guys. You’ll never catch me messing around'…For this to happen to him, it’s just a heartbreaker," Smith said.
11. SPRING VALLEY, WARREN CO., OH, 9/01/13: A hunter was apparently accidentally shot today during the opening day for mourning dove season at the Spring Valley Wildlife Area. The adult male victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of a minor gunshot wound, according to Matthew Hunt, regional wildlife officer for the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Hunt said it appears the man was shot accidentally by another hunter.
12. LANCASTER CO., NE, 9/01/13: Nebraska Game and Parks is investigating a hunting accident at Yankee Hill Lake about 12 miles southwest of Lincoln. According to Nebraska Game and Parks, two people were injured in an accident around 8 p.m. Sunday. "There were some hunters hunting on a wildlife management area" said Levi Krause, Nebraska Game and Parks. "One hunter shot at a dove apparently it was over a slight ridge. We believe that the pellets from his shotgun injured two individuals from the side of the ridge." Krause said an eight year old boy and 26 year old man were taken to Bryan Health's West Campus. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
13. CASSIA CO., ID, 9/01/13: The Cassia County Sheriff's Office says a 10-year-old was accidentally shot during a family hunting trip Sunday. Deputies responded just after 10 a.m. to the Jackson area near the Minidoka Dam for an accident involving a firearm. A 10-year-old girl was injured and taken to Minidoka Memorial Hospital. She was later taken by air ambulance to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. No word on her condition. Sheriff Jay Heward says the girl fell while hunting doves. She was carrying a .410 bolt action shotgun that accidentally discharged. She suffered partial injuries to her face and head.
14. MEMPHIS, TN, 9/01/13: A teenager is in critical condition after being shot on a playground near Evans Elementary School Sunday afternoon. The school is located in the 4900 block of Cottonwood Road near South Perkins and American Way. According to neighbors, the 14-year-old victim was playing with two others when the gun accidentally went off. The victim was hit in the side. Children from the neighborhood tended to the teenager until paramedics arrived. Deanna Conrad, 15, recalled how she heard about the incident. "My friend came in and was like 'he got shot, he got shot,'" said Conrad. But see: Friends say the teen may have been shot while playing what kids in the neighborhood simply call the "shooting game." "If it's a bullet in there or not they shoot it at you. And if you shot, you shot; you not, you not," says the victim's friend Deanna Conrad, 15.
15. SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA, 9/01/13: Police say an 8-year-old boy was shot in the head by his younger brother around 1 p.m. Sunday in the second block of Broad Street in Southampton Township. State Police responded to the scene, and the 8-year-old was flown to Hershey Medical Center. “Last we knew, he was in surgery in very, very serious condition,” Dave Freed, Cumberland County District Attorney, said. “It does not appear to have been an intentional act,” Freed continued. “But again, we need to investigate all of that and we will as time goes on.” Neighbors believe this tragedy could have been avoided. “If you’re going to own guns, be responsible,” Steven Roberts, a neighbor, said. “All of my guns and ammo are in gun safes. No kids can get to them, and that’s being a responsible gun owner.” UPDATE: He didn't make it.
16. AIKEN, SC, 9/01/13: An Aiken man said on Sunday that he shot himself while he was cleaning a gun and accidently pulled the trigger at his home on Westbrook Farms Trail. A bullet hit the man in the upper back of one of his legs. The man was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center for treatment.
17. ROYAL OAK, MI, 9/02/13: A Royal Oak resident was found dead this morning as the result of an accidental shooting, according to Royal Oak Police. Officers arrived at at 11:46 a.m. to the Main Street Lofts complex at 111 North Main on a report of an injured person in the lobby, according to a police press release. The victim, Randy Michael Bergeron, 61, was found with his legally registered handgun next to his body. Cause of death was a gunshot wound, according to Royal Oak Police. "It looks like his handgun was accidentally discharged," said Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue.
18. SHELBYVILLE, TN, 9/02/13: A Shelbyville man was accidently shot and killed during a skeet shoot early Monday night at his home. David Peoples, 41, was operating a skeet machine for a juvenile hunt on Barnett Road, Sheriff Randall Boyce said today. "Two shooters would step up, shoot and turn around and walk off," Boyce said. "One of them turned around, was walking away and the gun went off." The gun was being held by a relative of Peoples. His age was not available but he was a "young juvenile," Boyce said.
19. CASSEL, CA, 9/02/13: A 16-year-old youth shot in the face with a shotgun Monday evening suffered only minor injuries, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office. A man was handling his .410 shotgun and accidentally pulled the trigger, hitting his nephew in the face with one pellet, said Sheriff's Sgt. Marc St. Clair. The youth, whose name was not available, suffered only minor injuries, he said. The shooting occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. in the 22000 block of Cassel Road in Cassel. The youth was flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
20. CAMAS, WA, 9/02/13: A new gun owner accidentally shot himself in the hand Monday evening in Camas. Mackenzie Eaton, 22, was doing some practice drills with a 9mm Glock handgun when it went off and a bullet went through his left palm, said Sgt. Scot Boyles, spokesman for the Camas Police Department. The incident was reported at 6:21 p.m. Monday in the 700 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue. Eaton was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for his hand injuries. The accidental shooting follows one that occurred in Camas eight days prior on Sunday, Aug. 25. A man was using the flashlight mounted on his .40 caliber handgun to unlock a padlock in a dark room when the gun slipped and accidentally fired. The bullet went through his finger and lodged in his thigh, said Camas Police Sgt. David Chaney.
21. TARRYTOWN, NY, 9/02/13: As CBS 2’s Weijia Jiang reported, loved ones were speaking out for the first time Wednesday about the death of Megan Bookstaver, the 23-year-old woman allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Eric Gaulin, 25. The incident happened just after 4 p.m. on Labor Day, in a Tarrytown townhouse complex that overlooks the Tappan Zee Bridge, CBS 2's Steve Langford reported. Bookstaver was pronounced dead at the scene. “The victim was apparently in the company of two other persons in a fourth-floor bedroom examining firearms when one discharged. She was struck in the head,” Tarrytown Police Lt. William Herguth said Tuesday. A witness said Gaulin was cleaning the rifle when it went off.
22. WALTON CO., GA, 9/02/13: A man was lying in his bed when a bullet came through the wall of his house and ended up in his mattress. A Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputy was called out at 9 a.m. Monday to a residence on Plantation Ridge Court northeast of Loganville.
23. CHASKA, MN, exact dates unknown: Police in Chaska say that three in-laws were accidentally shot by other family members in two separate incidents, one of which happened during a game of Monopoly. Officers say the first incident they responded to a number of days ago involved a man accidentally shooting his father-in-law in the foot with a handgun. Then, this past weekend, officers said they responded to another shooting involving the family. This time, the father-in-law was apparently mishandling his handgun and shot himself in the hand while they were playing a board game. The bullet, after passing through his hand, then struck his wife in the stomach, police said.
24. MINEVILLE, NY, 9/03/13: A weapons training expert at the Moriah Shock facility in Mineville accidently shot himself in the hand Tuesday, Sept. 3. Michael Miron was cleaning his service weapon while off duty at home when the gun discharged at about 8:50 a.m., according to Steve Stahl, Moriah Police Department officer in charge. Ironically, Miron is a weapons training officer at Moriah Shock, Stahl reported.
25. DEKALB CO., GA, 9/03/13: The person shot by a DeKalb County police officer Tuesday morning was a 16-year-old Southwest DeKalb High School student skipping school, not a would-be burglar as initially believed, police said. DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander said Wednesday the shooting was an “unintentional misfire.” “It has been revealed to us that the subject shot by one our DeKalb police officers was not associated with the burglary on Streamside Court,” Alexander said. “He was truant from school and began running when he saw police officers in the area.” The teen was shot in the right arm and was in stable condition at a local hospital, police said. Alexander said one of the K-9 officers who saw the teen gave chase. When the officer’s dog tracked the teen to a shed the teen startled the officer and the dog, Alexander said. “That’s when we had an unintentional misfire,” Alexander said. Police did not make clear whether the officer’s weapon malfunctioned or whether the officer inadvertently pulled the trigger.
26. PENDLETON, OR, 9/04/13: A Pendleton man who suffered a gun shot to his leg Wednesday evening is in critical condition at a Portland hospital. Robert Inscore, 53, shot himself in the leg while cleaning his .22-caliber gun at his home, Pendleton Police Chief Stuart Roberts said.
27. SYLVESTER, GA, 9/04/13: Officers and Worth County EMS went to a home in the 300 block of Lakeview Drive after receiving a call in reference to an accidental shooting. 22-year-old Jonathan Long who at the residence was clearing and cleaning handguns in the kitchen with his 20-year-old neighbor Curtis Creel. During this time, a .40 caliber handgun Creel was holding accidentally fired. Police say that the projectile struck Creel in the hand, went through a cell phone, and into the thigh of Long.
28. CARLSBAD, NM, 9/04/13: A Carlsbad boy is accused of fatally shooting his cousin late Wednesday night. Carlsbad police said Michael Schultz, 15, shot Jeremy Hatfield, 12, around 9 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 400 block of North Olive Street. According to a news release, Schultz told police officers that he pointed a .380 handgun at Hatfield after Hatfield had pointed a toy pistol at him. He told police he thought he cleared the gun when he pulled the trigger. Schultz, and Destiny were taken to the Carlsbad Police Department to give statements. They told officers that Hatfield was shot after a drive-by shooting, and officers initially started looking for the suspect vehicle, but it was soon determined that the scene didn't match the statements given by the children. During questioning by Det. Sgt. Blaine Rennie, Schultz said he did point the gun at Hatfield, shooting him on accident.
29. MOUNT STERLING, KY, 9/04/13: Police say a Montgomery County man was taken to the hospital Wednesday evening after he accidentally shot himself in the leg. The accident happened on North Queen Street in Mount Sterling. Dispatchers say the gun went off as the man took it out of his holster.
30. MOUNT STERLING, KY, 9/04/13: Can't really tell whether this is the same incident or not. A Montgomery County man was arrested Friday following an accidental shooting in Mount Sterling on Wednesday. Larry Gibbs was arrested after, police say his son was shot in the leg. According to the citation, Gibbs and his son were involved in an argument. The citation says at some point a gun went off, and Gibbs' son was hit in the leg. On Friday, LEX18 took a listen at the 911 call Larry Gibbs made after the gun went off. 911 CALL: Son: You don't care if I've been shot. You don't give a (bleep) about me. Dad: I told you it was loaded.
31. MACON, GA, 9/04/13: A Macon homeowner has been charged with reporting a false crime after he told police a stranger shot him in the thigh Wednesday when he opened his door. According to a police news release, Macon Police detectives visited Drexel Holton at his Sugarloaf Circle home in north Macon Thursday and he "admitted he shot himself." He had originally told police that when he opened his door on Sugarloaf Circle Wednesday after hearing a noise. He told police that when he opened it, a man he didn't know shot him in the upper thigh.
32. SALINAS, CA, 9/04/13: One man was taken to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while trying to get away from police. Investigators ended up taking two men into custody. It happened Wednesday night around 10:30 p.m. near North Felice and East Market Street. Officers noticed a suspicious car parked along the road in Salinas. When officers approached they noticed the suspects to hide something from police. Police contacted the drive Gerardo Cerna, 23, who appeared very suspicious. The passenger in the car, Oscar Resendiz, 26, looked like he was trying to hide something. Police told Resendiz to show his hands and remain still, instead he tried to open the car door and flee. All of a sudden there was a muffled gunshot sound, police said. When officers got to the other side of the car, they saw Resendiz lying on the ground. The suspect had accidentally shot himself in the leg with a revolver he had been concealing in his waistband, investigators said.
33. HOUSTON, TX, 9/05/13: A passenger on a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus was accidentally shot on Thursday by another passenger, a Metro spokeswoman said. The shooter, who was on parole, fled but was caught by Metro officers about 20 minutes after the 3 p.m. incident near Scott and Holman, said agency spokeswoman Margaret O'Brien-Molina. According to surveillance video, the gunman had the firearm in his waistband, the spokeswoman said. It accidentally fired, and appeared to have ricocheted off a security glass pane on the bus before striking the other passenger, Molina said. The bullet apparently grazed that passenger, who was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was treated and released, O'Brien-Molina said.
34. SPENCER, IA, 9/05/13: An accidental shooting Thursday morning in Spencer injured an Arizona man. Police say 64-year-old John Muetzel was handling a .45 caliber semi automatic handgun when it went off, striking him in the left leg. Muetzel was transported by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury. Police say Muetzel was visiting family members at the time. Officers were called to the scene in the 800 block of 13th Avenue West shortly after 9 a.m.
35. SEATTLE, WA, 9/05/13: Seattle police say a "chaotic series of events" led to an officer accidentally shooting a young woman along Aurora Avenue North Wednesday night. Police were initially called to 120th and Aurora just before 11 p.m. to investigate a possible incendiary device. As officers pulled up to the scene, they spotted a woman punching another woman on the sidewalk, according to police. They stopped to break up the fight, at which point police say one of the women took off running. An officer jumped out of the patrol car and gave chase. He caught up with the woman in the parking lot of a nearby business. Police say the woman refused to show her hands, so the officer drew his gun. While drawing the gun, police say the officer accidentally shot the 19-year-old woman in the leg. The officer immediately called medics and "offered his apologies to the woman," according to police. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries. The woman was not armed.
36. NORTH CHARLESTON, SC, 9/05/13: Family members have identified the baby girl police say was accidentally shot by her 3-year-old brother in North Charleston on Thursday. Riley McClary, just 8 months old, was wounded in the shooting at 1910 Tulip Street, according to family members. North Charleston police said officers arrived at 1910 Tulip Street just before 6 p.m. Thursday and found an infant in a car seat in the living room suffering from a gunshot. Officers found the gun, a Charter Arms "Off Duty" .38 special, on the loveseat nearby. According to court documents, the gun belonged to Pryor. Police say 35 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of a cocaine-based substance were also found in the room. A neighbor says she's in disbelief. Theresa Jordan says she's lived in the area for almost two years, and says as far as she knows, nothing like this has happened before.
37. FRESNO, CA, 9/05/13: A homeowner who accidentally shot a firefighter in the leg early Thursday morning will not face criminal charges, Fresno police spokesman Jaime Rios said. The firefighter was just "doing his job" and also will not be penalized, Rios said. The shooting happened in a northwest Fresno home when a firefighter tried to gain entry through a bedroom window after no one responded to knocking, he said. "When the firefighter opened the window to try to get in, the alarm went off and woke up the residents there at the house," Rios said. "They were thinking there was an intruder coming in the window." The homeowner got his gun and fired a shot that grazed the firefighter's leg above the knee and resulted in a hospital trip, but Rios said the injury was minor. The homeowner's gun will not be confiscated. Johns said the incident apparently developed out of a misunderstanding. The homeowner said he does not have a medical alert device and the house was having alarm problems.
38. MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 9/05/13: Minneapolis police say the 2-month-old boy who was believed to have been struck by a stray bullet was actually accidentally shot by a family member. The shooting happened a little before 9 p.m. Thursday on the 2400 block of Emerson Avenue North. On Friday morning, police updated the case, saying the story they were originally given was not the truth. They determined that the child had actually been shot by the child’s uncle. The gun discharged accidentally while he was playing with it inside the residence, [Police spokeswoman Cyndi] Barrington said. The uncle, a 17-year-old, fled the scene. Police are currently trying to locate him.
39. YAKIMA, WA, 9/05/13: One man was badly wounded and another man was nicked by a stray bullet in a shooting Thursday morning in the 500 block of South Naches Avenue in Yakima. The first man, age 38, suffered at least two life-threatening gunshot wounds to the torso, Detective Sgt. Tim Bardwell said. An update on his condition was not available. The second man, age 33, was grazed in the shoulder by a stray bullet. “He was in a house across the street, in an upstairs bedroom,” said Bardwell, adding, “As near as we can tell, he had nothing to do with the initial incident.” He was treated at the scene, Bardwell said.
40. ROCHESTER, NY, 9/05/13: Police in Rochester say one man has been killed and another wounded in the city's second fatal double shooting in as many days. Officials tell local media that the gunman was riding a bicycle when he shot a 36-year-old man who was standing on a street on the city's west side shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday. A 22-year-old man standing nearby was hit by a stray bullet.
41. MARSHALL CO., OK, 9/05/13: Marshall County man has died after authorities said he accidentally shot himself in the head. Just before 10 p.m. Thursday night investigators said 20-year-old Tyler Morris was riding as a passenger in a car with his stepbrother. The car was stopped at the intersection off Cook road and Highway 70. That's when they said Morris reached into the glove compartment for an auxiliary cord for his cell phone and found his mother's hand gun. "He pulled it out, and the driver of the vehicle who's the stepbrother told him to put the gun down and he said "it's ok, I shot it before," said investigator David Barnes. Authorities said the stepbrother looked down at his phone, heard a single shot fired, looked up and saw Morris shot in the head. "We did an on-scene investigation and concluded that it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, possibly accidental in nature," said Barnes.
42. SAGINAW, MI, 9/06/13: A 14-year-old boy is dead after an accidental shooting, according to the Saginaw Police Department. The incident occurred about 3:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at a home on North Mason near Madison on Saginaw's West Side. A press release from Saginaw Police Detective Sgt. Reggie Williams stated police will not provide any additional information on the incident, including the name of the victim.
43. CHESAPEAKE, VA, 9/06/13: An accidental shooting is under investigation at the Naval Support Activity in Chesapeake. At approximately 3:30 p.m., a Marine with the Marine Corps Force Security Regiment suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the neck. The incident occurred at the Naval Support Activity Northwest Annex in Chesapeake, Va. where the unit was conducting training.
44. DAYTON, OH, 9/06/13: Police are investigating an accidental shooting that occurred on Cherry Drive late Friday night. Dayton Homicide Detectives were also called to the scene, in the 1000 block of Cherry Drive, to help investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. A male victim was found by police and medics in the front yard. Medics attempted to resuscitate the man before he was transported to a local hospital. The condition of the victim has not been released, police said. Witness statements, along with bystanders at the scene of the shooting, are what prompted responding officers to involve homicide detectives, said Sgt. Creigee Coleman of the Dayton Police Department.
45. MOORESBORO, NC, 9/06/13: A man died Friday night when he was accidentally shot by his 11-year-old stepdaughter, according to the Cleveland County sheriff. It happened around 11 p.m. Friday on Lemmon Road in Mooresboro. The sheriff’s office says the man recently purchased a .380 caliber handgun. He was showing it to his stepdaughter after the girl’s mother was asleep. Police say the victim removed the clip and handed it to the girl, who somehow pulled the trigger and shot the man.
46. LONGMONT, CO, 9/06/13: An 18-year-old woman was accidentally shot Friday evening and was pronounced dead an hour later after her family rushed her to a hospital in her own car, police said. "We can characterize this young women's death as unintended and extremely tragic," said Cmdr. Jeff Satur, Longmont police spokesman. The victim was identified early Saturday evening as Premila Lai of Niwot. Satur said the police investigation appears to show that Lai was hiding in a closet and jumped out to scare her friend, Nerrek Daniel Galley, 21, when she was shot. Galley, of Orem, Utah, has been arrested on unrelated warrants, Satur said. The Boulder County District Attorney's office will determine whether charges will be filed in the woman's shooting death. Galley is cooperating in the investigation, Satur said. An 18-year-old woman was accidentally shot Friday evening and was pronounced dead an hour later after her family rushed her to a hospital in her own car, police said. The accident reportedly happened at about 8 p.m. on a stairway inside a home on the 2500 block of Cambridge Drive. When police arrived they discovered the front door open and saw a blood on stairs. A handgun was laying on the floor with a live bullet stuck in the ejection port of the slide, a police report says. The victim's family had recently sold the home where the shooting took place and the 21-year-old man was staying in the home temporarily, Satur said. "There were no drugs, no gang activity and no alcohol," he said. "No one involved has a criminal record."
47. WAYNESBORO, GA, 9/06/13: Authorities in eastern Georgia say a sheriff's deputy responding to a fire was wounded as a loaded gun stashed inside the burning building went off in the intense heat. Burke County Deputy Jay Hollingsworth underwent surgery Friday night. Sheriff's officials said the bullet missed his vital organs. A statement from the sheriff's office says Hollingsworth was wounded as he responded to a structure fire outside the town of Sardis on Friday afternoon. Authorities say a gun stored inside the building discharged and the bullet struck the deputy.

Another week so rich in tales, you'd think I was making it up. Which is why I link to everything. This week in Georgia, a woman involved in a domestic dispute threw a rifle out the window (perhaps to prevent anyone from being shot in the dispute), only to have it discharge and wound two 17-year-old women shopping in a nearby store. Elsewhere in Georgia, a sheriff's deputy responding to a fire was shot when the heat set off a loaded gun stored in the home. In California, a firefighter responding to a medical alarm call was shot by the homeowner when he tried to gain entrance through a window. In North Carolina, a man showing his gun to his 11-year-old step-daughter was killed when she shot him with the bullet he forgot was still in the chamber, even after removing the gun's magazine. An 18-year-old Colorado woman was shot and killed by a friend after jumping out of a closet to scare him. In Houston, a man carrying a gun in his waistband accidentally shot a fellow passenger on a city bus. And in Chaska, MN, well, nobody's really sure how to explain it, but it sounds like the same family (and maybe even the same man) showed up at the hospital twice in the same week with accidental gunshot wounds, the second time accompanied by his wife, shot by the same bullet that inflicted the second wound.
The fall traditions continued, as well. First, this week saw two football games dedicated to players recently killed in accidental shootings: this time in Bowie, TX, and Carlsbad, NM. The second tradition: hunting accidents. Last weekend was the first weekend of dove hunting season in several states, and correspondingly, I found five hunting-related accidents that wounded six people, including a 10-year-old girl.
In what has become routine gun accident news, this week's compilation includes six gun cleaning accidents, two "home invasion" shootings, three accidents involving law enforcement officers, and one involving an active member of the armed forces.

1. TOMALES, CA, 8/10/13: Richard William Weller, 58, of Martinez had spent Saturday morning hunting with a group of people, Assistant Chief Deputy Coroner Lt. Keith Boyd said. The group was in a vehicle at a Middle Road property just south of Valley Ford when a firearm discharged, possibly when it fell from a rack, Boyd said. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the shooting at 12:28 p.m. Saturday. Weller was pronounced dead at 1:16 p.m., Boyd said.
2. DERBY, KS, 8/19/13: A Derby resident who sustained an accidental gunshot wound to the abdomen is expected to recover and has been released from the hospital. Timothy Davidson, 46, was transported by EMS to Wesley Hospital on Monday, Aug. 19, with non-life-threatening wounds, according to Derby Police Lt. Tim Brant. Police and EMS were dispatched to the home at about 11:15 a.m. Monday, due to the shooting, he said. “It does appear to be an accident,” Brant said. Davidson was at home at 1035 N. Georgie at the time of the shooting.
3. BURTON, MI, 8/27/13: A man shot himself on Willow Grove Drive in Burton, Aug. 27 at about 4:47p.m., police went to Genesys Regional Medical Center to interview a man who shot himself in the hand. The man told police he was cleaning the gun and forgot there was a live round in the chamber.
4. CARLTON, GA, exact date unknown: A man on Pine Valley Farm Road was taken to the ER at Athens Regional last week after he accidentally shot himself in the ankle while cleaning his 38-caliber revolver.
5. HOUSTON, TX, 8/31/13: An 18-year-old Houston man who was accidentally shot during a social gathering died of his injuries early Saturday, officials said. Erick Reyes was shot about 12:10 a.m. Saturday at a house in the 9200 block of Nyssa Street in northeast Houston, according to the Houston Police Department. Witnesses told police that several friends had gathered at the residence and that one man had a gun, said HPD spokesman John Cannon. "Witnesses say it accidentally went off, striking an 18-year-old male," Cannon said.
6. LYNN HAVEN, FL, 8/31/13: The Lynn Haven Police Department in conjunction with the District 14 Medical Examiner's Office is currently investigating the shooting which killed Anthony Jamar Pickering, 32 years of age of Pensacola. It happened around 1:00am Saturday at 415 Kentucky Avenue in Lynn Haven. At the time of the shooting, the victim's brother, Allan Jermaine Pickering was the only other person present in the home. While the investigation is continuing, Lynn Haven police say preliminary findings suggest that Anthony Jamar Pickering died as the result of an accidental discharge while handling a firearm.
7. GUYTON, GA, 8/31/13: A Guyton woman has been charged with reckless conduct following the accidental shooting of two teenagers. Samantha King, 20, was arrested on Aug. 31 when she threw a rifle off of the porch of a residence, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said. “The firearm discharged, firing into the Griffin Lake store and striking two 17-year-old females,” Ehsanipoor said. The incident occurred during a domestic dispute at a residence near the store.
8. MIDWEST CITY, OK, 8/31/13: A family in Midwest City is grieving the loss of their 20-year-old daughter. They say Destanie Leeson died Saturday night in what can only be described as a freak accident. Destanie's family tells News 9 she was getting ready for a birthday party around 5 p.m. Saturday inside the Chestnut Square Apartments when an old rifle fell, discharged and shot Destanie. Her family says she was painting her nails with a friend at their neighbor's apartment, who kept an old rifle from 1891 loaded on his dresser. Destanie's friend said the rifle fell and hit the wall and shot Destanie.
9. CHICAGO, IL, 8/31/13: Authorities have charged a 20-year-old man in connection with a shooting Saturday morning that left a 21-year-old man dead and another person injured. Vidal Martinez, of the 1300 block of South 58th Street in west suburban Cicero, is charged with one count of first degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. The charges stem from an early-morning shooting Saturday in the 3800 block of South Halsted Street, in the Bridgeport neighborhood. Police said a gunman shot the people after an altercation at a party. One was a 21-year-old Monee resident Daniel Ortiz, died at the scene. Another one of the men shot, also 21, was critically injured. Martinez also allegedly shot himself in the leg while in the car he fled in after the shooting.
10. BOWIE, TX, 8/31/13: A high school football player has been killed in a shooting incident northwest of Denton. In a news release, Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham confirmed 18-year-old Nathan Maki, starting fullback for Denton Guyer High School, was found dead in a pickup up truck in a field close to Bowie. Authorities made the discovery after receiving a call at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Maki was later pronounced dead at Bowie Hospital. According to friend and teammate Tyler Smith, Maki had been hunting with friends during the opening weekend of dove hunting season. Smith said he believes his friend was shot accidentally. The sheriff's office reports that a rifle was found at the scene. “He always used to talk about, 'I’m the safest guy around, guys. You’ll never catch me messing around'…For this to happen to him, it’s just a heartbreaker," Smith said.
11. SPRING VALLEY, WARREN CO., OH, 9/01/13: A hunter was apparently accidentally shot today during the opening day for mourning dove season at the Spring Valley Wildlife Area. The adult male victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of a minor gunshot wound, according to Matthew Hunt, regional wildlife officer for the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Hunt said it appears the man was shot accidentally by another hunter.
12. LANCASTER CO., NE, 9/01/13: Nebraska Game and Parks is investigating a hunting accident at Yankee Hill Lake about 12 miles southwest of Lincoln. According to Nebraska Game and Parks, two people were injured in an accident around 8 p.m. Sunday. "There were some hunters hunting on a wildlife management area" said Levi Krause, Nebraska Game and Parks. "One hunter shot at a dove apparently it was over a slight ridge. We believe that the pellets from his shotgun injured two individuals from the side of the ridge." Krause said an eight year old boy and 26 year old man were taken to Bryan Health's West Campus. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
13. CASSIA CO., ID, 9/01/13: The Cassia County Sheriff's Office says a 10-year-old was accidentally shot during a family hunting trip Sunday. Deputies responded just after 10 a.m. to the Jackson area near the Minidoka Dam for an accident involving a firearm. A 10-year-old girl was injured and taken to Minidoka Memorial Hospital. She was later taken by air ambulance to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. No word on her condition. Sheriff Jay Heward says the girl fell while hunting doves. She was carrying a .410 bolt action shotgun that accidentally discharged. She suffered partial injuries to her face and head.
14. MEMPHIS, TN, 9/01/13: A teenager is in critical condition after being shot on a playground near Evans Elementary School Sunday afternoon. The school is located in the 4900 block of Cottonwood Road near South Perkins and American Way. According to neighbors, the 14-year-old victim was playing with two others when the gun accidentally went off. The victim was hit in the side. Children from the neighborhood tended to the teenager until paramedics arrived. Deanna Conrad, 15, recalled how she heard about the incident. "My friend came in and was like 'he got shot, he got shot,'" said Conrad. But see: Friends say the teen may have been shot while playing what kids in the neighborhood simply call the "shooting game." "If it's a bullet in there or not they shoot it at you. And if you shot, you shot; you not, you not," says the victim's friend Deanna Conrad, 15.
15. SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA, 9/01/13: Police say an 8-year-old boy was shot in the head by his younger brother around 1 p.m. Sunday in the second block of Broad Street in Southampton Township. State Police responded to the scene, and the 8-year-old was flown to Hershey Medical Center. “Last we knew, he was in surgery in very, very serious condition,” Dave Freed, Cumberland County District Attorney, said. “It does not appear to have been an intentional act,” Freed continued. “But again, we need to investigate all of that and we will as time goes on.” Neighbors believe this tragedy could have been avoided. “If you’re going to own guns, be responsible,” Steven Roberts, a neighbor, said. “All of my guns and ammo are in gun safes. No kids can get to them, and that’s being a responsible gun owner.” UPDATE: He didn't make it.
16. AIKEN, SC, 9/01/13: An Aiken man said on Sunday that he shot himself while he was cleaning a gun and accidently pulled the trigger at his home on Westbrook Farms Trail. A bullet hit the man in the upper back of one of his legs. The man was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center for treatment.
17. ROYAL OAK, MI, 9/02/13: A Royal Oak resident was found dead this morning as the result of an accidental shooting, according to Royal Oak Police. Officers arrived at at 11:46 a.m. to the Main Street Lofts complex at 111 North Main on a report of an injured person in the lobby, according to a police press release. The victim, Randy Michael Bergeron, 61, was found with his legally registered handgun next to his body. Cause of death was a gunshot wound, according to Royal Oak Police. "It looks like his handgun was accidentally discharged," said Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue.
18. SHELBYVILLE, TN, 9/02/13: A Shelbyville man was accidently shot and killed during a skeet shoot early Monday night at his home. David Peoples, 41, was operating a skeet machine for a juvenile hunt on Barnett Road, Sheriff Randall Boyce said today. "Two shooters would step up, shoot and turn around and walk off," Boyce said. "One of them turned around, was walking away and the gun went off." The gun was being held by a relative of Peoples. His age was not available but he was a "young juvenile," Boyce said.
19. CASSEL, CA, 9/02/13: A 16-year-old youth shot in the face with a shotgun Monday evening suffered only minor injuries, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office. A man was handling his .410 shotgun and accidentally pulled the trigger, hitting his nephew in the face with one pellet, said Sheriff's Sgt. Marc St. Clair. The youth, whose name was not available, suffered only minor injuries, he said. The shooting occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. in the 22000 block of Cassel Road in Cassel. The youth was flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
20. CAMAS, WA, 9/02/13: A new gun owner accidentally shot himself in the hand Monday evening in Camas. Mackenzie Eaton, 22, was doing some practice drills with a 9mm Glock handgun when it went off and a bullet went through his left palm, said Sgt. Scot Boyles, spokesman for the Camas Police Department. The incident was reported at 6:21 p.m. Monday in the 700 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue. Eaton was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for his hand injuries. The accidental shooting follows one that occurred in Camas eight days prior on Sunday, Aug. 25. A man was using the flashlight mounted on his .40 caliber handgun to unlock a padlock in a dark room when the gun slipped and accidentally fired. The bullet went through his finger and lodged in his thigh, said Camas Police Sgt. David Chaney.
21. TARRYTOWN, NY, 9/02/13: As CBS 2’s Weijia Jiang reported, loved ones were speaking out for the first time Wednesday about the death of Megan Bookstaver, the 23-year-old woman allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Eric Gaulin, 25. The incident happened just after 4 p.m. on Labor Day, in a Tarrytown townhouse complex that overlooks the Tappan Zee Bridge, CBS 2's Steve Langford reported. Bookstaver was pronounced dead at the scene. “The victim was apparently in the company of two other persons in a fourth-floor bedroom examining firearms when one discharged. She was struck in the head,” Tarrytown Police Lt. William Herguth said Tuesday. A witness said Gaulin was cleaning the rifle when it went off.
22. WALTON CO., GA, 9/02/13: A man was lying in his bed when a bullet came through the wall of his house and ended up in his mattress. A Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputy was called out at 9 a.m. Monday to a residence on Plantation Ridge Court northeast of Loganville.
23. CHASKA, MN, exact dates unknown: Police in Chaska say that three in-laws were accidentally shot by other family members in two separate incidents, one of which happened during a game of Monopoly. Officers say the first incident they responded to a number of days ago involved a man accidentally shooting his father-in-law in the foot with a handgun. Then, this past weekend, officers said they responded to another shooting involving the family. This time, the father-in-law was apparently mishandling his handgun and shot himself in the hand while they were playing a board game. The bullet, after passing through his hand, then struck his wife in the stomach, police said.
24. MINEVILLE, NY, 9/03/13: A weapons training expert at the Moriah Shock facility in Mineville accidently shot himself in the hand Tuesday, Sept. 3. Michael Miron was cleaning his service weapon while off duty at home when the gun discharged at about 8:50 a.m., according to Steve Stahl, Moriah Police Department officer in charge. Ironically, Miron is a weapons training officer at Moriah Shock, Stahl reported.
25. DEKALB CO., GA, 9/03/13: The person shot by a DeKalb County police officer Tuesday morning was a 16-year-old Southwest DeKalb High School student skipping school, not a would-be burglar as initially believed, police said. DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander said Wednesday the shooting was an “unintentional misfire.” “It has been revealed to us that the subject shot by one our DeKalb police officers was not associated with the burglary on Streamside Court,” Alexander said. “He was truant from school and began running when he saw police officers in the area.” The teen was shot in the right arm and was in stable condition at a local hospital, police said. Alexander said one of the K-9 officers who saw the teen gave chase. When the officer’s dog tracked the teen to a shed the teen startled the officer and the dog, Alexander said. “That’s when we had an unintentional misfire,” Alexander said. Police did not make clear whether the officer’s weapon malfunctioned or whether the officer inadvertently pulled the trigger.
26. PENDLETON, OR, 9/04/13: A Pendleton man who suffered a gun shot to his leg Wednesday evening is in critical condition at a Portland hospital. Robert Inscore, 53, shot himself in the leg while cleaning his .22-caliber gun at his home, Pendleton Police Chief Stuart Roberts said.
27. SYLVESTER, GA, 9/04/13: Officers and Worth County EMS went to a home in the 300 block of Lakeview Drive after receiving a call in reference to an accidental shooting. 22-year-old Jonathan Long who at the residence was clearing and cleaning handguns in the kitchen with his 20-year-old neighbor Curtis Creel. During this time, a .40 caliber handgun Creel was holding accidentally fired. Police say that the projectile struck Creel in the hand, went through a cell phone, and into the thigh of Long.
28. CARLSBAD, NM, 9/04/13: A Carlsbad boy is accused of fatally shooting his cousin late Wednesday night. Carlsbad police said Michael Schultz, 15, shot Jeremy Hatfield, 12, around 9 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 400 block of North Olive Street. According to a news release, Schultz told police officers that he pointed a .380 handgun at Hatfield after Hatfield had pointed a toy pistol at him. He told police he thought he cleared the gun when he pulled the trigger. Schultz, and Destiny were taken to the Carlsbad Police Department to give statements. They told officers that Hatfield was shot after a drive-by shooting, and officers initially started looking for the suspect vehicle, but it was soon determined that the scene didn't match the statements given by the children. During questioning by Det. Sgt. Blaine Rennie, Schultz said he did point the gun at Hatfield, shooting him on accident.
29. MOUNT STERLING, KY, 9/04/13: Police say a Montgomery County man was taken to the hospital Wednesday evening after he accidentally shot himself in the leg. The accident happened on North Queen Street in Mount Sterling. Dispatchers say the gun went off as the man took it out of his holster.
30. MOUNT STERLING, KY, 9/04/13: Can't really tell whether this is the same incident or not. A Montgomery County man was arrested Friday following an accidental shooting in Mount Sterling on Wednesday. Larry Gibbs was arrested after, police say his son was shot in the leg. According to the citation, Gibbs and his son were involved in an argument. The citation says at some point a gun went off, and Gibbs' son was hit in the leg. On Friday, LEX18 took a listen at the 911 call Larry Gibbs made after the gun went off. 911 CALL: Son: You don't care if I've been shot. You don't give a (bleep) about me. Dad: I told you it was loaded.
31. MACON, GA, 9/04/13: A Macon homeowner has been charged with reporting a false crime after he told police a stranger shot him in the thigh Wednesday when he opened his door. According to a police news release, Macon Police detectives visited Drexel Holton at his Sugarloaf Circle home in north Macon Thursday and he "admitted he shot himself." He had originally told police that when he opened his door on Sugarloaf Circle Wednesday after hearing a noise. He told police that when he opened it, a man he didn't know shot him in the upper thigh.
32. SALINAS, CA, 9/04/13: One man was taken to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while trying to get away from police. Investigators ended up taking two men into custody. It happened Wednesday night around 10:30 p.m. near North Felice and East Market Street. Officers noticed a suspicious car parked along the road in Salinas. When officers approached they noticed the suspects to hide something from police. Police contacted the drive Gerardo Cerna, 23, who appeared very suspicious. The passenger in the car, Oscar Resendiz, 26, looked like he was trying to hide something. Police told Resendiz to show his hands and remain still, instead he tried to open the car door and flee. All of a sudden there was a muffled gunshot sound, police said. When officers got to the other side of the car, they saw Resendiz lying on the ground. The suspect had accidentally shot himself in the leg with a revolver he had been concealing in his waistband, investigators said.
33. HOUSTON, TX, 9/05/13: A passenger on a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus was accidentally shot on Thursday by another passenger, a Metro spokeswoman said. The shooter, who was on parole, fled but was caught by Metro officers about 20 minutes after the 3 p.m. incident near Scott and Holman, said agency spokeswoman Margaret O'Brien-Molina. According to surveillance video, the gunman had the firearm in his waistband, the spokeswoman said. It accidentally fired, and appeared to have ricocheted off a security glass pane on the bus before striking the other passenger, Molina said. The bullet apparently grazed that passenger, who was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was treated and released, O'Brien-Molina said.
34. SPENCER, IA, 9/05/13: An accidental shooting Thursday morning in Spencer injured an Arizona man. Police say 64-year-old John Muetzel was handling a .45 caliber semi automatic handgun when it went off, striking him in the left leg. Muetzel was transported by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury. Police say Muetzel was visiting family members at the time. Officers were called to the scene in the 800 block of 13th Avenue West shortly after 9 a.m.
35. SEATTLE, WA, 9/05/13: Seattle police say a "chaotic series of events" led to an officer accidentally shooting a young woman along Aurora Avenue North Wednesday night. Police were initially called to 120th and Aurora just before 11 p.m. to investigate a possible incendiary device. As officers pulled up to the scene, they spotted a woman punching another woman on the sidewalk, according to police. They stopped to break up the fight, at which point police say one of the women took off running. An officer jumped out of the patrol car and gave chase. He caught up with the woman in the parking lot of a nearby business. Police say the woman refused to show her hands, so the officer drew his gun. While drawing the gun, police say the officer accidentally shot the 19-year-old woman in the leg. The officer immediately called medics and "offered his apologies to the woman," according to police. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries. The woman was not armed.
36. NORTH CHARLESTON, SC, 9/05/13: Family members have identified the baby girl police say was accidentally shot by her 3-year-old brother in North Charleston on Thursday. Riley McClary, just 8 months old, was wounded in the shooting at 1910 Tulip Street, according to family members. North Charleston police said officers arrived at 1910 Tulip Street just before 6 p.m. Thursday and found an infant in a car seat in the living room suffering from a gunshot. Officers found the gun, a Charter Arms "Off Duty" .38 special, on the loveseat nearby. According to court documents, the gun belonged to Pryor. Police say 35 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of a cocaine-based substance were also found in the room. A neighbor says she's in disbelief. Theresa Jordan says she's lived in the area for almost two years, and says as far as she knows, nothing like this has happened before.
37. FRESNO, CA, 9/05/13: A homeowner who accidentally shot a firefighter in the leg early Thursday morning will not face criminal charges, Fresno police spokesman Jaime Rios said. The firefighter was just "doing his job" and also will not be penalized, Rios said. The shooting happened in a northwest Fresno home when a firefighter tried to gain entry through a bedroom window after no one responded to knocking, he said. "When the firefighter opened the window to try to get in, the alarm went off and woke up the residents there at the house," Rios said. "They were thinking there was an intruder coming in the window." The homeowner got his gun and fired a shot that grazed the firefighter's leg above the knee and resulted in a hospital trip, but Rios said the injury was minor. The homeowner's gun will not be confiscated. Johns said the incident apparently developed out of a misunderstanding. The homeowner said he does not have a medical alert device and the house was having alarm problems.
38. MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 9/05/13: Minneapolis police say the 2-month-old boy who was believed to have been struck by a stray bullet was actually accidentally shot by a family member. The shooting happened a little before 9 p.m. Thursday on the 2400 block of Emerson Avenue North. On Friday morning, police updated the case, saying the story they were originally given was not the truth. They determined that the child had actually been shot by the child’s uncle. The gun discharged accidentally while he was playing with it inside the residence, [Police spokeswoman Cyndi] Barrington said. The uncle, a 17-year-old, fled the scene. Police are currently trying to locate him.
39. YAKIMA, WA, 9/05/13: One man was badly wounded and another man was nicked by a stray bullet in a shooting Thursday morning in the 500 block of South Naches Avenue in Yakima. The first man, age 38, suffered at least two life-threatening gunshot wounds to the torso, Detective Sgt. Tim Bardwell said. An update on his condition was not available. The second man, age 33, was grazed in the shoulder by a stray bullet. “He was in a house across the street, in an upstairs bedroom,” said Bardwell, adding, “As near as we can tell, he had nothing to do with the initial incident.” He was treated at the scene, Bardwell said.
40. ROCHESTER, NY, 9/05/13: Police in Rochester say one man has been killed and another wounded in the city's second fatal double shooting in as many days. Officials tell local media that the gunman was riding a bicycle when he shot a 36-year-old man who was standing on a street on the city's west side shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday. A 22-year-old man standing nearby was hit by a stray bullet.
41. MARSHALL CO., OK, 9/05/13: Marshall County man has died after authorities said he accidentally shot himself in the head. Just before 10 p.m. Thursday night investigators said 20-year-old Tyler Morris was riding as a passenger in a car with his stepbrother. The car was stopped at the intersection off Cook road and Highway 70. That's when they said Morris reached into the glove compartment for an auxiliary cord for his cell phone and found his mother's hand gun. "He pulled it out, and the driver of the vehicle who's the stepbrother told him to put the gun down and he said "it's ok, I shot it before," said investigator David Barnes. Authorities said the stepbrother looked down at his phone, heard a single shot fired, looked up and saw Morris shot in the head. "We did an on-scene investigation and concluded that it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, possibly accidental in nature," said Barnes.
42. SAGINAW, MI, 9/06/13: A 14-year-old boy is dead after an accidental shooting, according to the Saginaw Police Department. The incident occurred about 3:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at a home on North Mason near Madison on Saginaw's West Side. A press release from Saginaw Police Detective Sgt. Reggie Williams stated police will not provide any additional information on the incident, including the name of the victim.
43. CHESAPEAKE, VA, 9/06/13: An accidental shooting is under investigation at the Naval Support Activity in Chesapeake. At approximately 3:30 p.m., a Marine with the Marine Corps Force Security Regiment suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the neck. The incident occurred at the Naval Support Activity Northwest Annex in Chesapeake, Va. where the unit was conducting training.
44. DAYTON, OH, 9/06/13: Police are investigating an accidental shooting that occurred on Cherry Drive late Friday night. Dayton Homicide Detectives were also called to the scene, in the 1000 block of Cherry Drive, to help investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. A male victim was found by police and medics in the front yard. Medics attempted to resuscitate the man before he was transported to a local hospital. The condition of the victim has not been released, police said. Witness statements, along with bystanders at the scene of the shooting, are what prompted responding officers to involve homicide detectives, said Sgt. Creigee Coleman of the Dayton Police Department.
45. MOORESBORO, NC, 9/06/13: A man died Friday night when he was accidentally shot by his 11-year-old stepdaughter, according to the Cleveland County sheriff. It happened around 11 p.m. Friday on Lemmon Road in Mooresboro. The sheriff’s office says the man recently purchased a .380 caliber handgun. He was showing it to his stepdaughter after the girl’s mother was asleep. Police say the victim removed the clip and handed it to the girl, who somehow pulled the trigger and shot the man.
46. LONGMONT, CO, 9/06/13: An 18-year-old woman was accidentally shot Friday evening and was pronounced dead an hour later after her family rushed her to a hospital in her own car, police said. "We can characterize this young women's death as unintended and extremely tragic," said Cmdr. Jeff Satur, Longmont police spokesman. The victim was identified early Saturday evening as Premila Lai of Niwot. Satur said the police investigation appears to show that Lai was hiding in a closet and jumped out to scare her friend, Nerrek Daniel Galley, 21, when she was shot. Galley, of Orem, Utah, has been arrested on unrelated warrants, Satur said. The Boulder County District Attorney's office will determine whether charges will be filed in the woman's shooting death. Galley is cooperating in the investigation, Satur said. An 18-year-old woman was accidentally shot Friday evening and was pronounced dead an hour later after her family rushed her to a hospital in her own car, police said. The accident reportedly happened at about 8 p.m. on a stairway inside a home on the 2500 block of Cambridge Drive. When police arrived they discovered the front door open and saw a blood on stairs. A handgun was laying on the floor with a live bullet stuck in the ejection port of the slide, a police report says. The victim's family had recently sold the home where the shooting took place and the 21-year-old man was staying in the home temporarily, Satur said. "There were no drugs, no gang activity and no alcohol," he said. "No one involved has a criminal record."
47. WAYNESBORO, GA, 9/06/13: Authorities in eastern Georgia say a sheriff's deputy responding to a fire was wounded as a loaded gun stashed inside the burning building went off in the intense heat. Burke County Deputy Jay Hollingsworth underwent surgery Friday night. Sheriff's officials said the bullet missed his vital organs. A statement from the sheriff's office says Hollingsworth was wounded as he responded to a structure fire outside the town of Sardis on Friday afternoon. Authorities say a gun stored inside the building discharged and the bullet struck the deputy.
