The most intriguing, at present, is Pastitia lentiscus resin, or mastic gum, which is used as a food component in the Mediterranean and as treatment for gastric disorders by traditional healers. Mastic gum kills H. pylori in vitro at concentrations equivalent to administration of 1000 mg twice a day. In the author’s unpublished personal series, mastic gum was effective in eradication of H. pylori using the stool antigen test in 75% of cases; the cure rate with conventional therapy at present is 96%.
