I don't know if anyone has been following the Amber Alert thing about the guy who killed a woman and her son and abducted the 16 year old daughter that he apparently had a crush on...
It seems clear to me that they know right where they are, and are just getting the proper people in place for the takedown.
They were sighted in my county, and then in the county to the north. What was reported online was that they were "spotted" in a couple other locations on their route, for example, msm reports showed a map of Red Bluff, CA earlier, then the reports disappeared.
They obviously can't tip them off by revealing that a shut-off cell phone can be pinged, law enforcement officials don't like revealing that very often, but they sure seemed to know the route, while keeping the details of "how" very vague. And since he was using his own car, there is license plate reading capability at many points along the way. (hint: look at your state's system of webcams, all vehicles on main highways are filmed.. leads to many "miracle" apprehensions)
The open stretch of desert they crossed in oregon was hours across, with nearly no place to hide... the state police could have set up a roadblock, but that would have forced a showdown, with possible bad outcome for the girl.
They have been spotted in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, a place that i spent several summers in, fighting fires there. The country is hella-rough, the trail system is not super extensive compared to other areas. The backcountry ranger there is not the one to confront them, as all he or she would have is a pack mule and a pulaski. Even chainsaws are not allowed in Wilderness areas.
The cold front that just came through has caused the night-time temps to dip into the 40's or lower in that area, so they may even have a campfire. Taking down a guy with a hostage is not something often done out in the woods, so i bet they are assembling the right resources to do it without getting the girl hurt. There are several platforms for FLIR (infrared radar) that can be used, but i bet their location is basically known and there are people surrounding them and closing the net right now. I also wouldn't be surprised if Dimaggio gets picked off without warning to prevent him from hurting the girl if he feels cornered... surprise is everything. He already killed a woman and her son and torched them... unless he gives himself up, the last thing he will probably see is a red laser spot on his chest.
