Global-Commercial and Aerospace Hydraulics—There is a need, in our opinion, for
high reliability, very high pressure hydraulic pumps with variable displacement in the
commercial and aerospace industries. Current pumps are generally limited to pressures of
3000 psi (200 Bar), with a few available at pressures of up to 5,000 psi (345 bar). Also,
most piston pumps are “swash-plate” designs that use inlet and outlet ports (valve plate)
to control filling and discharge. The ports are open and closed by means of the rotating
cylinder. Because the ports are not positively sealed, they leak, causing low volumetric
efficiency at low speeds. Variable displacement is achieved by mechanically tilting the
swash-plate (this changes the piston stroke) with a hydraulic actuator, which is bulky,
expensive and has poor transient response.

As mentioned earlier, we are developing a new common rail/hydraulic pump that is
capable of pumping lube oil (for intensified common rail injectors), hydraulic fluids and
DME. This pump is based on our proven cam actuated, check controlled axial piston
pump. Our pumps are inlet throttled to control the effective displacement without
complicated and costly tilting actuators, and have much faster response time. AFT pumps
have 100% volumetric efficiency across the entire speed range because we use positive
sealing checks for filling and discharge, and we also employ advanced polymer seals on
the pistons. There is no internal leakage!
