I had been using Schwab since 1995 (then e.schwab). As online brokerages became more popular, Schwab's commissions became increasingly unattractive. And customer service seemed to be in decline - indeed I got a few letters of apology for it that was sent to all account holders. Typical was a long-winded canned e-mail response to a question I didn't ask, while the question asked was left unanswered.
On the positive side, they do allow you to trade without cash in your account, with the understanding they will be paid by settlement date. (But avoid relying on the US Postal Service, I had one deposit take ten days to get posted)
