Next Level Communications (NXTV:Nasdaq - news) was up 21.8% in late trading after rising sharply shortly before 1 p.m. EDT.

W.R. Hambrecht this afternoon upgraded the communications equipment maker to buy from neutral, noting that its largest customer, Qwest Communications (Q:NYSE - news), recently reiterated its "very positive" view on DSL technology and said it plans to move to mass deployment of VDSL technology in the first half of 2002.

Hambrecht also said it believes Next Level will successfully secure financing from its parent company, Motorola (MOT:NYSE - news). Motorola was down 0.7%.
