Tom Petty "Got Chills" When the DNC Played His Song "Won't Back Down" As POTUS Walked on Stage

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Republicans keep using artists' music without permission, and the artists aren't happy about it (most recently as in this reclist diary).

But Tom Petty was very pleased when his song was played when President Obama walked out on stage after President Clinton's speech.

But Petty was pleasantly surprised on Wednesday night, when his song "I Won't Back Down" played as President Obama walked onstage at the Democratic National Convention, after former President Bill Clinton's speech. "I got chills," said Petty. "They knew it would be okay. I've had a chance to meet the President and talk to him about the music he listens to."

I can't blame him.

Musicians want nothing to do with Republicans, but are thrilled when their music is used by Democrats. Tells you something.

Tom Petty was interviewed by Rolling Stone on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards who was there with his daughter and video director Adria.

As November 6th approaches, let's take Tom Petty's words to heart and Not Back Down.

10:05 AM PT: I should add that the VMA awards, from where Tom Petty was interviewed, were moved up to 7PM ET (from their usual broadcast time of 8PM ET) in order not to conflict with the President's speech.

MTV has moved up the start of its annual Video Music Awards so its fans won’t have to choose between pop stars and President Barack Obama.

The show is airing Thursday, the night Obama accepts the Democratic nomination for another term as president. But MTV said Tuesday it will run the show an hour earlier than it usually does to not conflict with Obama’s speech.

The show will run from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern time. The president is scheduled to speak from the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., after 10 p.m
