A Redding man who has unsuccessfully sought numerous elected offices was arrested this past weekend on suspicion of stalking a woman and violating a restraining order, police said today.

Russell Kay Hunt, 52, was booked Sunday into Shasta County jail following his arrest on a warrant. He later posted bail and was released.

Police said a woman, who is not being identified, reported to police on Aug. 21 that Hunt had been stalking her for the past year.

The woman said she had met Hunt about a year ago, but that he was only an acquaintance, police said.

She said she then began to receive unsolicited letters and gifts from Hunt, which made her uncomfortable, police said.

She told Hunt that his advances were unwelcome and that she would seek a restraining order if they continued, police said, adding that she later obtained a restraining order against him.

Police, who obtained arrest and search warrants, said they received a tip on Saturday that Hunt was at a local bar and he was taken into custody without incident.

The search warrant was served on Sunday at Hunt’s home and police said they recovered several items that were relevant to the case.

The nature of those items was not disclosed.

Hunt, who often finds himself in the news, mostly recently garnered headlines in June after he was robbed and pepper-sprayed by an unknown attacker on Bechelli Lane while on his way home from a bar.

But Hunt is best known for campaigning unsuccessfully for several Shasta County public offices, including a run for the county clerk's office in which he vowed not to grant marriage licenses for transsexual couples.

Since the late 1980s he also has run unsuccessfully a number of times for the Redding City Council, most recently in 2008 and 2010, and he filed papers to run for the Shasta County Board of Supervisors in 2008. He has also run for positions on at least two school boards.

Hunt also was arrested in late 2010 in a case that stemmed from accusations that he forged the city's seal to send phony code enforcement notices to neighbors of his, but the case was thrown out of court in February 2011 after a judged ruled there wasn't enough evidence.
