Stephanie -- we'll see what the 'vast public' does or doesn't get by the election -- this is anything but something folks on our side should be passive about, even if Obama (has correctly determined that his campaign) has to be -- I know that I would be significantly less concerned about Romney if it weren't for the Mormon thing and the central role it has played in his life
all he does say directly about his faith now is that he is 'devout'
he has done the missionary thing, luxury-style of course with extra draft deferments, 'Elder Mitt' and all, and has said that that was key in his life experience, turned him 'serious' about things
as the Mormon Bishop in Boston he told a young single-mother-to-be to 'give up your baby or give up your God'
he has confirmed that he baptised the dead
millions of dollars that he gets to deduct as charitable contributions each year to the Church -- and to its little projects like Prop 8
the White Horse Prophecy, and he in particular as having been seen virtually from birth as being the Prophet-on-his-way-to-being-God who'd deliver on that Holy Prophecy
all these tings are known, confirmed -- and are just (some of) the direct hooks of Romney the man to Mormonism the (still, today) utterly batshit insane fucking cult -- all as exhaustively gone into in the (linked in) http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=77589007 and preceding
Douthat did manage to weakly allude to the key point -- Mormonland is a Mormon company town -- church, with indoctrination and submission requirements attached and religious (and/or other) discrimination allowed, displaces and takes over, however adequately or not, functions properly provided, without indoctrination/submission required or discrimination allowed, by secular government -- and thus, imposing its absolutisms, church takes over society -- that's what Mormonism is about, that's what the Catholic Bishops are about, that's what the Evangelical Fundamentalists are about -- and in particular with this pair topping the Republican ticket, that's what this election in particular is about -- nothing less than turning this nation into an out-and-out, and deeply authoritarian, theocracy -- with the simultaneous marriage, indeed marshalling and control, of that with/by the plutocrats' free-market bullshit and Big Lie astroturfing and just buying this election, a thoroughly fascist theocratic plutocracy
