New Priorities USA Action Olympic-Theme Ad Blasts Romney

Priorities USA Action: "Romney's Gold"

Wed Jul 25, 2012 at 04:16 AM PDT

Paid for by Priorities USA Action, the one-minute spot shows footage of Romney at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2002. The ad makes it appear as though he's welcoming China, India, Burma, Switzerland, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, which is meant to suggest that Romney has outsourced American jobs to the first three countries and stores part of his money in offshore accounts in the latter three.

The ad also dovetails well with Romney's arrogant refusal to release his tax returns.

Script:

Welcome to the Olympics. There's Mitt Romney, who ran the Salt Lake City Games, waving to...

China - home to a billion people. Thousands owe their jobs to Mitt Romney's companies.

India, which also gained jobs thanks to Romney, an outsourcing pioneer.

And Burma, where Romney had the uniforms made for the 2002 games.

We know the Swiss have a special place in Mitt Romney's wallet — er - heart.

He kept millions in Swiss banks — those Swiss sure know how to keep a secret.

Speaking of secrets, there's Bermuda. Home to a secretive corporation set up by Romney. No one knows why. And Romney won't tell.

And the Cayman Islands. Where Romney keeps millions to avoid U.S. taxes.

Ya gotta say this about Mitt Romney. He sure knows how to go for the gold...for himself.

As the Wall Street Journal notes, this is Mitt's Olympic week, one in which we can expect paeans to his managerial "success' in "saving" the Salt Lake Games to be a major theme from his campaign, repeated as nauseum while Mr Romney and his wife observe their tax-deductible dancing horse in the dressage competition.

Mr. Romney's 2002 Olympics stint remains one of the clearest examples of how he sought to transfer his corporate-restructuring experience to a public institution, a theme that runs through the heart of his challenge to President Barack Obama. Both the kudos and the criticisms will be back in the spotlight this week when Mr. Romney visits the London Games, a pointed reminder from the candidate of his former role.

Hence the critical timing of this ad. As reported in the New York Times:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/25/pro-obama-ad-delivers-an-olympic-themed-attack-on-romney/

The biting nature of the ad is a reminder for the Republican campaign that the president and Democrats are not about to stand by while Mr. Romney uses his Olympic narrative to make political gains in the presidential election.
