Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan campaign on the freedom of living without Medicare

Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney, with Sen. Ron Johnson, yuck it up.

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), congressman Paul Ryan and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney attend a pancake breakfast in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, April 1, 2012. Romney, just two days before the Wisconsin primary on April 3, continues to spend his days campaigning in the state.

VP talk is flying after Mitt Romney's campaign appearance with Republican wunderkind and austerity poster boy Rep. Paul Ryan in Wisconsin today.

Starting the fourth day of his heartland bus tour, Romney carried his economic message here to Janesville, the hometown of Rep. Paul Ryan, where he was introduced by the trifecta of Badger State Republican stars – Walker, Ryan and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus. [...]

Ryan, who chairs the House Budget Committee, called Romney a leader with “bedrock of principles” and a “moral compass” as he tried to bestow upon Romney the fiscal credibility he enjoys among conservatives.

“In this coming election, we’re going to make a choice,” Ryan said. “What kind of country do we want to have? What kind of people do we want to be? We want to be free. That’s right.”

Yes, we want to be free from Medicare, and that's what Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will deliver to us, if Romney's elected. That'll be true either with Ryan on the ticket with him, or continuing as the House budget leader. Ryan's and Romney's moral compass points to as much suffering for as many of the undeserving as they can ladle out, starting with ending Medicare.

But for Democrats, Ryan would be a dream VP choice. Consider the focus group interviews Democracy Corps presented last week. They talked to independents and weak partisans in Columbus, Ohio, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in one part focused on the economy, but also talked about the Ryan plan.

Romney’s support for the Ryan budget is a real vulnerability. Many voters are not familiar with the Ryan budget or Romney’s full-throated support for it. When informed about the budget’s contents and Romney’s endorsement, voters’ worst fears about Romney are confirmed.

Well I think it’s scary about the whole idea of cutting food stamps, nutrition aid to mothers and children. The whole idea of decreasing education funding, eliminating teachers, firefighters, police officers. I mean that’s—knee-jerk reaction that was scary. (College-educated woman, Bala Cynwyd, PA)

Even without Ryan on the Republican ticket, this is a theme Democrats should be hammering until every voter in the country comes to the same realization the voter from Bala Cynwyd reached last week: These guys are scary. That's, in part, how President Obama's campaign responded:

Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith issued a statement saying, “Americans can’t afford Romney economics” because he would “rubber stamp the Ryan budget.”

“Romney’s speech today was an exercise in angry and evasive rhetoric,” Smith said. “He offered no ideas of how to create jobs now or strengthen the economy, just dishonest attacks against President Obama.”

What's needed in that response, though, is some basic education for voters on exactly what the Ryan budget will mean, starting with taking away Medicare.
