$BWMG Mr. Brown (Brownie) started Brownie’s Third Lung (BTL) in 1969 because of his own personal desire to dive for tropical fish with as much freedom as possible. For the company’s first 16 years, Brownie’s Third Lung thrived as a garage industry, designing and building all of its products in-house. Robert Carmichael, Brownie’s first full time employee, took over ownership of the company from Mr. Brown in 1985.
