Generators are great but the motive power is problematic, it's almost impossible to store enough fuel for long term off-grid use. Steam is labor intensive between supplying wood & stoking the fire plus minding the pressure guages. An exception and probably the best would be water wheels in a fast moving stream or mill pond.

Now solar is kind of expensive to set up but afterwards requires nothing other than wiping dust off the array and routine care of the batteries. Assuming we are in a time of great stress electricity is very low on the priority list (unless it runs the well pump) as labor needs to be focused on food, water and shelter.
