The Plant that they are demolishing in Oak Ridge was originally called “The Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant.” As part of the Manhattan Project, the Plant was designed to produce enriched uranium for use in atomic weapons operations during World War II.

After the war, this Plant was renamed the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and produced enriched uranium for the commercial nuclear power industry from 1945 to 1985. In 1987, DOE renamed the site the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) and began a major environmental cleanup project with the long-term goal of converting ETTP into a private industrial park called Heritage Center.

UCOR/CH2M HILL took over the project in Aug. of 2011. Bechtel was the original contractor. The contract was re-posted, and re-awarded.

Bechtel has been DOE's environmental manager in Oak Ridge since 1998. The report notes that DOE is concluding Bechtel Jacobs' contract six months ahead of it scheduled expiration date (Dec. 31, 2011) "due to ongoing performance issues."

They have been working on this project in Oak Ridge TN since it began in 2004. The project is expected to continue through 2016. It was mile-long facility, which was the world's largest building under one roof at the time of its construction during the World War II Manhattan Project; and hazards associated with the degraded condition of the 65-year-old structure.

In only six year they had already spent $717 million on this project, and now this new award to hopefully complete the demolition is for $2.2 billion.

Do not know if there are any groundwater issues, or specialty areas to make use of MSE, or MBS, but MSE does have a business address in Oak Ridge, so they have probably been generating business there for a number of years.
