My Review of the Tivus System

I arrived today at the Philly Marriott to see for myself the Tivus system. I didn't want any special treatment nor did I want to have the system "rigged" performance and system-wide for me -- so I didn't ask for Tivus at the Marriott nor did I tell SP about my visit. I just wanted the system to appear as what other guests would see.

Let's start with everything physical about the system:

The TV remote is very simple and light. It feels new but like any hospitality remote, it is very simple and easy to use. Looks a little better than any of the remotes I've used in the past but still feels cheap and probably cheap to replace.

The television itself is an LG 37 inch TV (Model: 37LD655H) -- it is a very clean looking LCD TV.

The back of the TV had a Enseo box neatly attached. It looks like it is using HDMI output (nice!) and an ethernet RJ45 cord for the TV portion making it true IPTV! Too many times, hotels will bring the coax cable (with the television feed) to this box and claim that this is IPTV when it really isn't true IPTV.

Here is a picture of the backside ports of the LG television. Most of it is connected to the plugpanel in the hotel desk (so that any guest can come in and easily plug in their devices without fiddling with the television itself).

The interface looks different from the video jwez presented. The font and format has changed with a few (less) options. Under the TV and Entertainment list, you have Television, Hollywood Movies, and Yoga (weird not seeing Adult Entertainment on the list). Under Guest Services, we have Hotel Information, Folio / Express Checkout, Messages, News, Weather, and Flight Status. Clicking on Help just tells you to use what keys to change TV listings (that is pretty pointless). Under Marriott on the Move, you have a short story about Marriott.

The font of the interface has changed (not sure why). However, they kept the 3 tiles on the welcome screen and included a nice background of Philly.

You can see this font in the guide (I think it's hideous so that's why I keep mentioning it). However, the guide worked smoothly and quickly. No complaints here.

I liked the transparent background shown in the video for the channel banner but it looks like this is more easier to read. Not sure the logic in behind this change either.

This is one of the features (flight status) of the system that displays the current status of flights from Philly International (you choose the parameters). Not sure how they update the parameters though since the airlines were not in alphabetical order and some older airlines were on there (i.e. Continental).

Overall, the system looks like it is in place and it works. I still think there are a few tweaks to be made but i'm sure they are still working on it. The system was a nice, functional system but didn't WOW me. Maybe when they were showing the system in the HOST conference, they had that sexy interface in place. I'd say it's on par (or a little better) with the rest of the systems out there -- it is certainly faster than many of the other systems i've used. The potential is there and hopefully my next visit back to Philly Marriott will WOW me.
