Westmoreland Coal Company (Westmoreland) is an energy company. The Company’s operations include five surface coal mines in Montana, North Dakota and Texas and two coal-fired power generating units with a total capacity of 230 megawatts in North Carolina. During the year ended December 31, 2009, it sold 24.3 million tons of coal. The Company operates in two segments: coal and power. The Company’s coal segment is focused on coal markets. Its two-thirds of produced coal is non-compliance sub-bituminous coal from the Northern Powder River Basin, while the remaining third is lignite. The Company owns two coal-fired power-generating units in Weldon, North Carolina with a total capacity of 230 megawatts. In January 2012, the Company acquired Chevron Mining Inc.’s Kemmerer coal mine in Lincoln County, Wyoming.
