Naguales - guardian spirits
The sense of the wholeness and interpenetration of all living things was so strong in the ancient American peoples that they believed a man's fate to be determined by his birthday, and also by his name, which even today is linked with his animal totem. Naguales were guardian spirits that took the form of an animal or a bird and presided over a man's fate.
