Debt would balloon under Republicans’ tax plans: report

February 23, 2012, 11:45 AM

Bad news for the Republican candidates from the nonpartistan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget: All of the GOP hopefuls’ tax and spending plans (except one) would swell the $15 trillion U.S. debt.

Rep. Ron Paul emerges as the lone debt hawk from the committee’s analysis, released on Thursday.

Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are the worst offenders, according to the report. Gingrich’s policies, including creating a flat tax of 15% and slashing corporate taxes, would add an estimated $7 trillion to the debt by 2021. By reducing rates on long-term capital gains to 12% and putting in place two income-tax rates, Santorum’s policies are projected to pile on $4.5 trillion.

Mitt Romney’s plan — which includes reducing all individual tax rates across the board by 20% — would add about $2.6 trillion to the debt, according to the analysis, done by U.S. Budget Watch, a project of the Committee.

Only Paul would shrink the debt, the report said, by $2.2 trillion. Paul would cut the debt by saving money from Medicaid and slashing defense and other spending.
