what this IS about, ultimately, is a concept that is absolutely fundamental to the kind of GENUINE liberty this nation has been about since it was founded, and that, accordingly, is absolutely NOT subject to exception, negotiation or compromise under ANY circumstances -- being also a concept that our current religious right openly holds in utter contempt (as fundamentalists of all stripes have indeed done throughout history, time and again to disastrous end) -- that concept being:

just as I shall be obligated to respect your absolute right to your own beliefs, to your own view and understanding of the meaning of life and the nature of reality, so too shall you be obligated to respect my absolute right to my own beliefs, to my own view and understanding of the meaning of life and the nature of reality -- AND government and the law shall not EVER favor any particular such beliefs, views and understandings over any others
