The Empire District Electric Company (EDE) is an operating public utility engaged in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity in parts of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The Company operates in three segments: electric, gas and other. EDE’s other segment consists of its fiber optics business. Its wholly owned subsidiary is The Empire District Gas Company (EDG), which is engaged in the distribution of natural gas in Missouri. The territory served by its electric operations includes an area of about 10,000 square miles, located principally in southwestern Missouri, and also includes smaller areas in southeastern Kansas, northeastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas. As of December 31, 2010, the Company supplied electric service at retail to 120 incorporated communities. EDE serves the city of Joplin, Missouri, and its immediate vicinity, with a population of approximately 157,000.
