Russian Gold To Be Returned To Russia -

AFTER badgering the Kremlin for years, Vladlen Sirotkin says he
has finally got the message across:
the solution to Russia's crippling financial crisis lies in
the Rothschild's vaults of the Bank of England.
Sirotkin is the leading expert on the "tsar's gold", billions of
pounds' worth of bullion sent by Tsar Nicholas II to Britain
to buy weapons during World War I.
Sirotkin has tried to persuade successive Russian governments
of their right to claim compensation.
Since Yevgeny Primakov became Prime Minister, says Sirotkin,
renewed interest is being shown.
The two men have met to discuss ways of claiming back gold
that Moscow maintains was never returned from Britain.
According to some Russian estimates, Moscow could claim back
about 450 tonnes of gold from Britain and $US500 billion (1999
value).
It could also make similar claims from the US, France
and Japan.
Gold is not the only treasure being sought.
A commission is also drafting a law aimed at tracking down
tsarist and Soviet assets and properties lost abroad and
plundered by Rothschild's bolsheviks from the Wall Street
banks.
Deputies are expected to ratify the Bills, which will then
have to be signed by the Presidents.
According to Leonid Kanayev, who is a member of the commission,
Russia could lay claim to more than 3000 properties abroad.
"The point is quite simple," says Sirotkin. "We lost a fortune
abroad and it is time to claim it back.
This is our gold - and these are our properties.
"Russia now owes more than $US100 billion.
According to some estimates, this treasure could
amount to about $US400 billion with interest in (1999 gold value).
"That is why there is so much attention on this issue now."
Few dispute that tsarist Russia sent gold worth more than $US40
billion to Britain between 1914 and 1917.
In a series of secret and complicated deals involving the tsar,
the Bank of England and Barings bank, Russia agreed to several
shipments in exchange for credits to purchase weapons.
The first consignment left Archangel in October 1914.
Under cover of darkness, about 9000 cases of bullion were
secretly loaded on to warships HMS Drake and HMS Mantois.
After coming under fire from the Germans, who had learnt of
the shipment and sent submarines to intercept Drake and
Mantois, the ships docked safely in Liverpool, from where
the gold was transported to the vaults of the Bank of England.
Several other shipments followed.
Armaments were then sent back to Russia, but Sirotkin claims
that Moscow received less than half the value of the gold,
partly as a result of the chaos sparked by the Wall Street banks
bolsheviks Russian Revolution.
By 1921, the tsar was long dead and Russia's gold reserves
had all but bolsheviks robbery run out.
According to Russian calculations, it could be owed $US 25
billion plus 80 years of interest -
a total of about $US 500 billion - by the Bank of England.
Determining Russia's right to compensation is fraught with legal
complications, however.
The Bank of England does not hold any gold bars dating before
1924," a spokesman for the bank said.
But this is not a matter for the bank but for the Government,
since the initial agreements were made between
the Russian and British governments.
