<<KMAG Is Source Tagging & That's The Name Of The Game>>

What Is Source Tagging?

Worldwide, retail shrinkage amounts to more than $70 Billion USD, of which about 40%, or roughly $28 Billion USD, is attributed to shoplifting. Retailers employ a wide variety of technologies and other measures to combat these staggering losses, one of the most popular of which is Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS.

EAS has been around for more than 30 years now and there are more than 800,000 EAS systems installed in stores around the world. While there are several different EAS technologies in existence, the bulk of all active systems today are one of just two dominant types. All EAS systems consist of tags or labels that are attached to or hidden in merchandise, and a set of detectors, usually installed at a store's exits, which are designed to detect tags and/or labels when they have not been removed or deactivated at the point of sale.

Historically, the tags and labels were applied by hand to merchandise right in the store – a costly addition to a store's labor expense. During busy seasons, goods often went on the sales floor without EAS protection, making them vulnerable to theft.

While in-store tagging is still performed today, a large and growing number of products are now “Source Tagged” by the product manufacturers. By sewing a tag into fashion items or applying an adhesive label inside of a product package or even in the actual product, manufacturers can provide a level of protection and compliance difficult to achieve at the store level, using much more economical means.

Demand for the adoption of Source Tagging was originally driven by some of the largest retail organizations in the world. Today, as a result of widespread acceptance, source tagging benefits retailers of all sizes across many market segments.

Source Tagging Technologies

There are primarily two EAS technologies that dominate the world market for retail theft prevention. Although originally available from just a few companies, both Swept Radio Frequency (commonly referred to as RF) and Acousto- Magnetic (commonly referred to as AM) are now manufactured by several companies located in North America, Europe and Asia, and distributed globally.

Although roughly equal in popularity, AM and RF are incompatible technologies. The tags from one will not activate the system of the other therefore, in order for source tagging to be effective, the tag installed at the source must match the technology in use at the destination store.

At KMA, we make each of our source tagging solutions available in both of these popular EAS technology formats, and in the case of our DualTag ™ , we combine the key elements of both, into a single label.

Apparel

The soft goods or apparel sector includes a wide variety of products, many of which require a somewhat different approach in order to be a part of an effective source-tagging program at the retail store. Generally considered to be a major theft area, there are certain categories of apparel that stand out as significant problems.

Outerwear, intimate apparel, swimwear and jeans, as well a broad range of designer merchandise of all types is particularly prone to theft. Other high theft categories being targeted by retail include sporting goods such as branded apparel and sport specific gloves. In department and discount stores, the home fashion segment is a perennial problem.

Accordingly, KMA offers a variety of sew-on labels, each designed to satisfy unique aesthetic, demographic, point of sale KMA sew-on labels are designed and tested for compatibility with both and application requirements of those host garment categories and products. Acoustic Magnetic (AM) and Swept Radio Frequency (RF) sensor technologies and are made with tested and field-proven materials.

KMA sew-on labels are manufactured in our ISO-9001 certified factories in Canada, Hong Kong and beginning early in 2007, we will begin manufacturing in India. We maintain inventory of all of our most popular products in our factory warehouses so we can process and ship orders, usually on the same day.

In addition, our use of high-speed, high capacity, automated equipment means we can quickly fulfil large or custom orders. We also maintain long term supply agreements dedicated to maintaining custom inventories of select products, in custom colors and printing, for just in time (JIT) delivery programs.

NEXTag One AM

Our original design and still the most popular sew on tag in the industry. Stocked in white and grey, it is the best value for most garment and home fashion applications.

NEXTag Jean AM

The Jean Tag was developed specifically for the denim industry and is ideal for tacking or stapling directly under the joker tag. The Jean Tag is blue and approximately twice the size of our standard "Original" NEXTag.

NEXTag Slimline AM

The Slimline is a narrower tag, specially designed for intimate apparel and sporting gloves, while also being appropriate for all other products where size is a constraint.

NEXTag TuffTag AM

Using Dupont's Tyvec material, the TuffTag AM combines a softer touch with a stronger, tear-proof material. Its glossy finish provides the ideal medium for sharp graphics and print. Available in either NEXTag One or Slimline size.

NEXTag Custom AM

Our art department will work with your finishing team to custom design a special NEXTag just for you. Using any of our materials, we can match fabric colors, logos, and provide custom messages as desired. Note that print and logos must be the same, single color.

Grocery

If you are using an EAS system to protect some of the merchandise in your supermarket, then you already know that there are a number of high-theft items on which the standard labels from your EAS vendor simply don't work very well. Take frozen food for example... Either the labels fall off on their own soon after being applied, or would be so easy for a shoplifter to remove that it may not be worth the time or expense to put them on in the first place.

For many, that usually means not merchandising some products where and how they would like. Items such as frozen seafood, hot & cold deli, prepared meats, wines and spirits, sundries, specialty foods and others typically fall into this category....

GSL AM (Sensormatic™ compatible)

The GSL AM is available in both a Microwave-safe format or equipped with Sensormatic's standard Dual Resonator (DR) label. Many consumers defrost frozen meats in their original packaging, using their microwave oven. For that reason, the microwave safe version is recommended for prepared meats, while the standard version is suitable for most other applications.

KMA's GSL-AM is available as a plain white label, with our generic print (see photo above), or can be custom printed with your store logo, special message or other design (There is a minimum quantity requirement on custom orders).

GSL RF (Checkpoint™ compatible)

The GSL RF is a high quality, waterproof, Microwave-Safe label that can be applied to almost any high-theft product found in the supermarket environment. Although originally designed to protect difficult to tag items like frozen seafood and prepared meats, today it is used on almost any item in the store.

KMA's GSL-RF is available as a plain white label, with our generic print (see photo), or can be custom printed with your store logo, special message or other design (There is a minimum quantity requirement on custom orders).
