Ad for gun training bars Muslims and Obama voters

By Zachary Roth | The Lookout – Fri, Oct 28, 2011

A radio ad for a handgun training class that bars Muslims and Obama voters has sparked an investigation in Texas [ http://www.kvue.com/news/Radio-ad-refuses-service-to-Obama-supporters-Muslims-132748178.html (KVUE video report embedded in this article and at this KVUE link)].

"We will attempt to teach you all the necessary information you need to obtain your [Concealed Handgun License]," the ad says. Then towards the end, it adds: "If you are a socialist liberal and/or voted for the current campaigner in chief, please do not take this class. You have already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision under the law."

And then: "If you are a non-Christian Arab or Muslim, I will not teach you the class with no shame; I am Crockett Keller, thank you, and God bless America."

The ad ran for six days on KHLB, Mason's local station. It's also been heard tens of thousands of times on Youtube.

Keller, 65, has said in media interviews that he just regards the message is just common sense. "The fact is, if you are a devout Muslim, then you cannot be a true American," he told local news station KVUE, while fielding calls congratulating him for his stance. "Why should I arm these people to kill me? That's suicide."

"I call it exercising my right to choose who I instruct in how to use a dangerous weapon," he added.

But the state of Texas may disagree. The Department of Public Safety said in a statement that certified instructors of handgun training are required to comply with all applicable state and federal laws, and added: "Conduct by an instructor that denied service to individuals on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion would place that instructor's certification by the Department at risk of suspension or revocation." The department has said it has begun an investigation.

It seems unlikely that Keller will back down, though. "I'm not going to do it," he told the local news. "I will give up my license to teach before I will teach them," he said, referring to Obama voters and Muslims.

ATF sting leads to arrests of 2 Virginia men

By Carol Cratty, CNN
October 28, 2011

Two men were arrested Friday in Virginia Beach, Virginia, for allegedly selling machine guns and improvised explosive devices to an undercover federal agent.

Leonard Davis and Christopher Phillips made brief court appearances and will remain jailed pending the outcome of detention hearings scheduled for Wednesday, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said.

According to an affidavit supporting arrest warrants for the men, ATF Special Agent John Hansen said that, in August, he had received information from state and federal law enforcement agents that the two men possessed and had sold unregistered machine guns.

That led the ATF to conduct a sting operation during which an undercover agent purchased 15 improvised explosive devices and 20 machine guns, some with homemade silencers, the affidavit says. The agent allegedly bought them for more than $21,000 from Davis during meetings at his home in September and October.

The affidavit adds that Davis was in constant communication with Phillips, owner of a gun refinishing business called Combat Weapons Coatings of Virginia, in Virginia Beach, where the ATF alleges the weapons were produced. A call to the business was not immediately returned.

The men are facing charges of conspiring to possess and transfer unregistered machine guns. The affidavit says Davis faces an additional gun charge because he has a felony conviction and has not had his right to own weapons restored. The ATF also alleges marijuana was discovered at Davis' home.

ATF spokesman Mike Campbell said Davis was attempting to sell additional weapons to the undercover agent when he was arrested.

The document describes Davis as wearing body armor during meetings with the undercover operative and having claymore mines in cabinets in his house.

Davis allegedly told the undercover agent that some of his family members belong to a "prominent" motorcycle gang in California and he asked the man to "guarantee that none of the firearms or IED's would get into the hands of rival motorcycle gangs." The affidavit said the agent told Davis he planned to sell weapons to drug dealers. That statement allegedly prompted Davis to ask about the possibility of trading machine guns for marijuana.

Va Republican party condemns Loudoun GOP e-mail with an image of Obama shot in the head

The Republican Party of Virginia is strongly condemning an e-mail sent by Loudoun County’s GOP committee that shows President Obama as a zombie with part of his skull missing and a bullet through his head.

“The disgusting image used today on a mass e-mail has no place in our politics. Ever,’’ said Pat Mullins, chairman of the state party. “The Republican Party of Virginia condemns the image and its use in the strongest possible terms.”

Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) called the e-mail “shameful and offensive,’’ his spokesman Tucker Martin said. “He calls on those involved to apologize for their actions, and to immediately ensure that such imagery is never used again. The governor has long stressed the need for more civility and respect in our politics. An e-mail like this one undermines those goals, offends all Virginians and discredits our entire political process. It will not be tolerated.”

The e-mail, first reported on the blog Too Conservative [ http://www.tooconservative.com/?p=10939 ], has “Halloween 2011” in the subject lines and has several other images, including one of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, whose face has been made to look deformed with one eye bulging out of its socket.

The e-mail invites supporters to a Halloween parade. “LCRC members and Republican candidates: We are going to vanquish the zombies with clear thinking conservative principles and a truckload of Republican candy...It’s fun and a great way to represent our candidates to a ton of voters (and their kids) just before the election.”

Mullins said the state party is in the process of contacting those who are responsible for the image and demanding that they stop using it and issue an apology.

Mark Sell, chairman of the Loudoun County Republican Committee, issued a statement that said:

“The Loudoun County Republican Committee yesterday sent an email to its members that represented a light-hearted attempt to inject satire humor into the Halloween holiday,’’ Sell wrote. "Apparently, some individuals have interpreted an image of Barack Obama that appeared within the email as intending to portray the president as a victim of a violent crime. Nothing could be further from the truth, and we deeply and sincerely apologize to the president and anyone who viewed the image if that was the impression that was left. The LCRC deplores any effort to display, suggest or promote violence against the president or any other political figure.”
