fuagf -- on 9/1, the Cardinals were far out of contention for the last NL playoff slot, not far from mathematically eliminated -- then they went on a great run while the team they needed to catch and pass utterly collapsed right through the final games of the regular season, with the Cardinals just pulling ahead only with the results of the final day's games (and just so it's stated, the reason for my 'that's it, we're toast' was the personage chosen for the evening's ceremonial first pitch)
