If there is any truth to the rumor of the show, it is probably the Outdoor Station not Discovery Channel (based on the name of the show in that post ie Gold Fever'). I suspect they are piggy backing on the Gold Rush show of Discovery.

There are very few companies in the continental US that are producing gold. So any interest in home grown gold producers could lead to SFMI. The history of War Eagle Mountain is pretty significant as well, so that is another point of interest in this regard.
