Advanced Sonar Technology
HOMELAND SECURITY
Northstar designs and manufactures sonar detection systems for the HOMELAND SECURITY and military defense industries. These systems detect and track combat divers to protect aircraft carriers, ships, harbors and ports.
We use our world-class sonar and marine engineering expertise to develop the sonar hardware and the mechanical housings for the underwater components of these systems.
The recent international focus on HOMELAND SECURITY and anti-terrorism will provide dividends for Northstar’s shareholders.
AQUACOMM
Northstar’s most advanced sonar technologies are being developed under this US$2.5 million program, with applications in defense, offshore oil & gas, fishing, oceanography, environmental and marine transportation industries. Both the Atlantic Innovation Fund and the National Research Council are funding AQUACOMM’s development.
Our objective is to capitalize on Northstar’s expertise in sonar technology and marine engineering to become a Commercial Sonar Center of Excellence through the AQUACOMM program.
NETMIND
Fishermen around the world are utilizing NETMIND’s trawl monitoring sonar sensors to measure performance. Information is transmitted via our wireless communications link up to the ship where it is displayed on a computer screen…the Captain’s “Eyes Beneath the Sea”.
The NETMIND system enables the Captain to more efficiently and economically capture the fish stocks while conserving other non-commercial species.
Electronic Contract Manufacturing
Northstar has manufactured submarine control consoles for Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics in Virginia for a number of years. Recently, Northstar signed a Manufacturing License Agreement (MLA) with Lockheed Martin that enables the company to produce submarine control consoles for Lockheed Martin's international clientele.
This MLA also allows Northstar to deal directly with the Canadian Department of Defence.
Northstar is inceasing awareness for console manufacturing for surface naval ships.
Systems Integration
Northstar Network carries out multifaceted contracts, which require several subcontractors to perform specialized tasks. Northstar brings the various components together into a complete system. Prospective new projects such as the F-3S Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program awarded by the U.S. government to Lockheed Martin would be able to employ our SYSTEMS INTEGRATION expertise.
A new research and development program targeting subsea sonar communications... the AQUACOMM program is fully funded with the addition of equity financing to the announced support of the Atlantic Innovation Fund and the National Research Council, now totalling Cdn$3.7mm.
Northstar’s strategy is the development of up to ten new sensing and wireless communication products over the next four years. These will be in various sectors including offshore petroleum, defense, marine transportation, oceanography and commercial fishing. The company intends to produce products in conjunction with major partner companies which will market the final products in their respective sectors.
Northstar plans to develop the following products and technologies:
*Spread Spectrum Communications: Although this is an extension of our core technology, it will become a core technology of its own. It is at the leading edge of underwater wireless developments with many applications in military submarine communications, other defense systems, oceanographic instrumentation, oil field instrumentation and fisheries net monitoring. This technology development will result in recognition of Northstar as one of the lead players in this field worldwide.
*Configurable Sonar Module: Applications in Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and other defense and oceanographic instrumentation.
*Remote Control of Subsea Wellheads: Applications in the offshore petroleum industry.
*Acoustic Positioning System: Applications in offshore petroleum and oceanographic industries.
*Non-contact Battery Recharging System: Applications in the offshore petroleum, oceanographic and environmental industries.
*Floating Production Platform Mooring Chain Monitoring: Applications in the offshore petroleum industry.
*Extended Life Sensors: Applications in the offshore petroleum, oceanographic and fishing industries. The Wave of the Future…has Arrived: AQUACOMM
The first application of Northstar’s sonar and wireless communication technology is the highly successful NETMIND system for the world’s commercial fishing industry.
The NETMIND system uses this technology to take measurements of the parameters of commercial fishing nets and transmits the information back to the ship. The system works reliably in extreme conditions and is well known internationally for its great saving in time and expenses and lessens gear damage considerably. The quality of the catch is improved immensely.
NETMIND monitors the performance of a trawl, and is both a conservation tool and an efficiency tool. It consists of a group of electronic sensors that transmit measurements from the net through the water to a receiver on the ship via a hydrophone. The information is processed on a deck unit, displayed on a computer screen to enable the captain to see what activities are occurring in the net. He then knows how to adjust the height and width of the net’s opening, how many fish are in the opening and when the net is full and ready to be pulled in. Fishers call NETMIND their “eyes beneath the sea”.
NETMIND was introduced to the marketplace in late 1996 and sales are growing as a result of strong international marketing. A key group of purchasers is various U.S. government agencies, such as the NOAA and the U.S. Geological Survey, among others, that have subsequently given very positive feedback. Sales of NETMIND have grown steadily as a result, with international customers appreciating both price and technological advances relative to the competition.
Northstar carries out manufacturing of electronic systems under contract to large defense corporations such as Lockheed Martin.
Homeland Security
Northstar expects to receive orders from a defense contractor for the production of sonar defense systems. This will draw on our expertise that we display in electronic and mechanical systems.

Submarine Control Consoles
Several years ago, Northstar signed a Teaming Agreement with Lockheed Martin, a major U.S. defense contractor, for the manufacture of control consoles for submarines. In October 1999, Northstar secured a U.S.$2mm contract with Lockheed Martin to manufacture consoles for the Canadian Navy’s new Victoria Class submarines. This contract was successfully completed in March 2001. A follow-up contract was awarded and completed in 2001.
In 2005 Northstar received a U.S.$1.2M follow-on manufacturing/technology refresh contract from Lockheed Martin. This follow-on contract is expected to be completed by mid 2006. Lockheed Martin has indicated they will use NTI for console production on their international programs, where they are permitted to do so. Northstar expects steady growth in this sector over the next several years.
RFID Electronics
IDBlue™ RFID Pen
Northstar has agreed to manufacture the IDBlue™ RFID reader for Cathexis Innovations, a developer of leading-edge RFID Technology.
Cathexis, working with its partner company, Baracoda™ has launched IDBlue™, a powerful hand-held RFID “pen” reader that harnesses the power of RFID and Bluetooth® technology. This pen-sized scanner reads and writes information stored on RFID tags and wirelessly transfers it to a desktop computer, laptop, PDA or Pocket PC via Bluetooth®.
IDBlue™ also doubles as a stylus allowing it to be used with Pocket PCs and Tablet PCs while being carried around in a pocket or on a belt clip. This versatility of use, along with powerful development tools for rapid integration, has allowed IDBlue™ to be deployed in a variety of applications ranging from security inspections, inventory control, document management, maintenance and equipment management, event attendance, PoS and beyond.
The Manufacturing Agreement specifies that Northstar will manufacture the IDBlue™ units and ensure that they meet all assembly, test, labeling and quality requirements. The Manufacturing Agreement designates that Northstar shall manufacture and deliver the IDBlue™ device to Cathexis. Northstar will also develop tooling, fixtures, CNC programming, manufacturing processes, procedures and custom components as necessary in support of IDBlue™ production for Cathexis.

Check Out The P-3 Orion Here Players! Northstar is manufacturing components and assemblies for new production Service Life Extension kits for the wing upgrade for the P-3 Orion. Lockheed Martin's P-3 MLU Program is the only certified, low-risk and cost-effective solution to extend aircraft service life. The MLU replaces the aircraft outer wings, center wing lower section and horizontal stabilizer with new production components. It removes all current P-3 airframe flight restrictions and will add more than 15,000 flying hours to each aircraft, representing 15 to 20 additional years of service for this critical maritime patrol and reconnaissance resource. There are more than 430 P-3 aircraft in the worldwide fleet.

Northstar Electronics, Inc. (OTCBB:NEIK) announces that its wholly owned subsidiary, Northstar Network Ltd. (NNL), has been awarded additional contract work on the Canadian Halifax Class, Frigate Upgrade Program from L-3 MAPPS (NYSE:LLL) totaling US$450,000.

The new work is part of L-3’s Integrated Platform Management System and specifically relates to additional control panels for engine room and landing craft deck areas as well as other machinery control facilities. A similar project increase is anticipated shortly for associated equipment connection installations associated with the supply of control consoles throughout the ship.
In June, the Company completed a private placement in a unit offering with a unit comprised of a common share and a half warrant. A full warrant is exercisable within a three year term.
