Breakaway: One of the wives of jailed polygamist, Warren Jeffs has fled his secluded compound

One of the wives of Warren Jeffs has broken away from the private Arizona compound once ruled by the jailed polygamist leader.

The 25-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, left the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) compound on the Utah-Arizona border on Monday with the help of law enforcement officers, Nate Abbott, a Washington County, Utah sheriff's detective said.

He said: 'A 25-year-old female reportedly left a residence in Colorado City, Arizona, and arrived at another residence in Hilldale, Utah.

'She asked for assistance.

'Our deputies responded and facilitated that request.

'She was able to peacefully leave the area'.

Jeffs, the 55-year-old spiritual leader of a breakaway Mormon sect, is serving a life prison term in Texas after being convicted of sexually assaulting two girls he wed as spiritual brides when they were 12 and 14 years old.

His polygamist sect, which experts estimate has 10,000 followers in the US has been condemned by the mainstream Mormon church and is accused of promoting marriages between older men and girls.

The woman who left the sect's compound this week was in police custody just long enough to allow her to leave the community and get shelter, Detective Abbott said.

He declined to say where the woman had been staying since she left the compound on the Utah-Arizona border, accompanied by sheriff's deputies.

But he said she was able to 'go to a place of refuge'.
The Colorado City compound, which Jeffs lived in prior to his arrest in August 2006, has around 5,000 residents, largely secluded from the outside world.

Washington County Attorney Brock Belnap said he was not sure if criminal charges will be filed in the case.

'It all depends upon what she wants to do. She's an adult and we have to respect her choices.

'Right now we don't know what she will say or do that could possibly lead to charges', he added, saying that Utah officials were not sure how many of Jeffs' wives were in Utah or surrounding areas.

Isaac Wyler, a former FLDS member who still lives in Colorado City, said he hoped the woman did not return to the polygamist community. My feeling is I'm darn glad she got away.

'Apparently this is the second time she tried. I'm really glad she has been successful', he said.

'What ends up happening is when you come out of this cult you are so brainwashed that you are going to blood atone for your sins of running and things like that.

'And they put so much pressure on you to come back or you are going to burn eternally'.

Utah State Attorney General's spokesman Paul Murphy said he did not know the woman's exact circumstances.

'I don't know whether there has been any abuse or why she is leaving, but there are plenty of groups out there that have made themselves available and offer transition and shelter and help that is needed,' he said.

Warren Jeffs is returned to prison after treatment

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The leader of a polygamist sect has recovered from illnesses that sent him hopping to prison units and hospitals around Texas.

Warren Jeffs, 55, the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, has returned to the Powledge Unit in Palestine, a prison official has said.

"It is my understanding that he has recovered," Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said on whether Jeffs will continue to receive medical treatment.

Because of fasts and other unspecified medical conditions, Jeffs needed medical treatment shortly after he was sentenced in early August to life plus 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting two girls 12 and 15 years old.

Jeffs went to three separate institutions before returning to the Powledge Unit on Sept. 30, where he has been in protective custody to keep other inmates from him.

Jeffs' first-degree felony bigamy case is scheduled for February, and a pretrial is scheduled Jan. 6.

From 2008 to 2010, while jailed in Arizona on charges related to sexual crimes, Jeffs also engaged in fasts.

TDCJ can force-feed Jeffs if deemed medically necessary, Clark has said.

In the past, Jeffs has led the FLDS from his jail cell, and former and current FLDS members have said they believe he will continue to exercise his authority with the help of his brothers.

The sect continues to exert pressure on its members to submit to the community. Law enforcement in Washington County, Utah, said a woman, reportedly one of Jeffs' 78 wives, tried to flee an FLDS community this week. Jeffs has fought to get retried, submitting handwritten motions for a new trial. He has called in by phone in a pretrial hearing for the bigamy case.
