The current heat wave continues across North Texas. A persistent upper level ridge is expected to bring our current string of consecutive 105 degree days up towards all-time record highs this weekend and into the upcoming week. The upper ridge will build west by mid-week which will allow for the possibility of an afternoon thunderstorm interrupting the streak of 105 degree days. Regardless, temperatures are expected to remain dangerously hot as the persistence of our current heat wave makes heat related deathsand illnesses more likely. The heat will continue to strain water and energy resources across the state as well.
The summer of 1980 is considered to be the hottest in recorded history across North Texas. Comparisons are being made between this summer and the summer of 1980. While it has been hot this year...it has not yet been as brutal as 1980. The mean temperature through August 4 is actually 0.1 degree warmer...but the daytime highs in 1980 were considerably warmer than those of this summer. Overnight lows are much warmer this summer than in 1980, which islikely due to significant urban development around DFW airport since 1980.
The temperature data in the graphs if from June 1 through August 4 for both 2011 and 1980. The 100-degree day information are totals for the entire year.
