Geekbench comparison analysis. I normalized the Atom result down to 0.9 GHz, which is probably unfair to it as scaling should be better than that as bandwidth/clock would go up at lower clockspeed, and computed the ratio of it to the 0.9 GHz A9 result to get an idea of relative ipc and here's the result

Single-thread Multi-thread

Integer
-------

Blowfish 1.27 1.00
Text Compress 1.04 0.80
Text Decompress 0.98 0.92
Image Compress 0.96 0.70
Image Decompress 0.94 0.75
Lua 0.78 0.56

Floating Point
--------------

Mandelbrot 0.77 0.70
Dot Product 0.58 0.52
- vectorized 1.15 1.19
LU Decomposition 0.92 0.80
Primality Test 0.45 0.37
Sharpen Image 0.18 0.16
Blur Image 0.51 0.45

Conclusions ? Well the single-core Atom probably has the edge in single-thread integer if you consider scaling down should be slightly better than this otherwise dual-core A9 beats it well especially in scalar floating point. It does particularly well in the Sharpen Image which is an architectural strength as ipad2 even beats a quad 1.6 GHz i7 in this in single-thread 719 to 661 despite being slaughtered elsewhere in totals, 5583 to 760. Atom may have a real fight on its hand fighting off ARMs in all its market segments eventually if these tests are any representative of general performance but i3/5/7s look currently safe on known A9 performance.
