MM's are not required to show size if they are selling, shorting, or buying for their own inventory.

when you see a MM sitting at the ask selling from a 5,000 reflection (and it doesn't decrease when hit) it is either a short or someone with enough clought in the market to have a broker with an MM in his pocket (this would generally be a finance guy) and on the flip side of that when you see a MM sitting on the bid with a 5,000 reflection and they are taking shares with no decrease in the reflected size...it would be a MM either taking in inventory to go long or covering a short

this of course doesn't take into account those that trade with AON's but they are usually rare because it is a tough fill

once again they have skewed the rules to keep the playing field sloped toward the institutions.
