DeMint, Kyl and McConnell fight the War on Christmas

Barbara Morrill Wed Dec 15, 2010 at 05:30:05 PM PST

Can someone go to hell for blatantly using religion to advance a political agenda? If so, it looks like Senate Republicans are earning themselves express rides to the Inferno.

Going on the assumption that they only had to obstruct Senate action until December 17, the presumed end of the lame-duck Congress, they were caught flat-footed when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced they would stay in session through the holidays to finish the job they were hired to do.

So they've apparently settled on launching salvos in the Republican-imagined War on Christmas.

We've had Jon Kyl (R-AZ) sobbing that working the week after Christmas was "disrespecting" Christians everywhere, Jim DeMint (R-SC) self-righteously declaring that it was "sacrilegious" to vote on bills before Christmas -- while admitting on Fox News that he was simply "run[ning] out the clock" -- and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) sending out an email blast with a speech by the late Sen. Robert Byrd about not working on Sundays.

Meanwhile, someone who has some skin in the game of actual war, Brig. Gen. John Adams, has this to say about working on Christmas:

We have one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand US warriors doing their job over Christmas and the New Year, the U.S. Senate should do its job –

Instead of shamelessly holding up their alleged Christianity as an excuse for their obstruction and delay, perhaps Republicans should remember those 150,000 military men and women, along with the millions of other Americans who don't get three weeks off for Christmas, and just do their damn job.

And then they should go to hell.
