This should probably get added to the FAQs since it gets asked so often.

Why Can't I Delete My Old Images in "My Pictures"?

You can't delete images, you can only hide them from view in My Pictures. This is because the purpose of loading images in to My Pictures is to use them in posts. If you deleted the images at some later point, anyone reading the post (and people read old posts for years) would see a broken image.
