but, unlike in the SS system, money paid into the stock market can't be used to pay current retirees.

Cash is transferable, but unless we're going to issue the retirees shares of IBM, lol, any pay into the stock market is as if, for current retirees, the money wasn't deducted from the paycheck at all.
