Cisco, Extreme Networks Settle Network-1 Patent Case in Trial

Cisco Systems Inc. and Extreme Networks Inc. were among a group of networking-gear makers that settled a patent-infringement lawsuit filed by Network-1 Security Solutions Inc.
Terms weren’t disclosed. The announcement was made today in a Tyler, Texas, court, where the case was in trial. It involved claims against Cisco; Extreme; Adtran Inc.; Brocade Communications Systems Inc.’s Foundry Networks; 3Com Corp., now owned by Hewlett-Packard Co.; and Enterasys Networks Inc.
Network-1 sued in 2008, claiming infringement of a patent for a way to send power remotely through Ethernet cables to devices such as security cameras and Internet-based phones. New York-based Network-1 said any company that followed an industry standard for power over Ethernet was using its invention.
The patent, which expires in 2020, involves sending a low- level current to first test if the device can accept power, and then sending the remote power.
Officials and lawyers for the companies had no comment or didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment. The trial, before U.S. District Judge Leonard Davis, began July 12.
The case is Network-1 Security Solutions Inc. v. Cisco Systems Inc., 08cv30, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Texas (Tyler).
